This study developed a comprehensive and easily applicable nuclear reactor control system evaluation method using reactor operators behavioral and mental workload database. A proposed control panel design cycle consists of the 5 steps: (1) finding out inconvenient, erroneous, and mentally stressful factors for the proposed design through evaluative experiments, (2) drafting improved design alternatives considering detective factors found out in the step (1), (3) comparative experiements for the design alternatives, (4) selecting a best design alternative, (5) returning to the step (1) and repeating the design cycle. Reactor operators behavioral and mental workload database collected from evaluative experiments in the step (1) and comparative experiments in the step (3) of the design cycle have a key roll in finding out defective factors and yielding the criteria for selection of the proposed reactor control systems. The behavioral database was designed to include the major informations about reactor operators' control behaviors: beginning time of operations, involved displays, classification of observational behaviors, dehaviors, decisions, involved control devices, classification of control behaviors, communications, emotional status, opinions for man-machine interface, and system event log. The database for mental workload scored from various physiological variables-EEG, EOG, ECG, and respir- ation pattern-was developed to indicate the most stressful situation during reactor control operations and to give hints for defective design factors. An experimental test for the evaluation method applied to the Compact Nuclear Simulator (CNS) installed in Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) suggested that some defective design factors of analog indicators should be improved and that automatization of power control to a target level would give relaxation to the subject operators in stressful situation.
Temperature distributions and thermal stresses were calculated and analyzed to investigate the effect of the artificial holes to the transient behaviors of the superconductors which was cooled in liquid nitrogen. Three dimensional finite element method was used to calculated the transient temperature and thermal stresses in the superconductors. The cooling speed of the superconductors with holes is faster than those without holes. Because the thermal stresses calculated in the superconductors can be relaxed by the distributed holes, the volume of the peak tensile stress decreases during the cooling in liquid nitrogen. If optimal metal, which can maintain the relaxation of thermal stresses, is used to fill and reinforce the artificial holes, the probability of failure of the superconductors may be decreased by the decrease of volume of peak tensile stress.
Residual stresses arising from the materials processing such as welding and joining affect significantly the structural integrity depending on the external loading condition. The quantitative measurement of the residual stresses is of great importance in order to characterize the effects of the residual stresses on the structural safety. In this paper, we introduce a newly devised destructive technique, the contour method (CM), which is applied for the measurements of the residual stress distributions through the thickness of a 80 mm thick steel weld. Residual stresses are evaluated from the contour, which is the normal displacement on a cut surface produced by the relaxation of residual stresses, using a finite element model. The CM provides a two-dimensional map of the residual stresses normal to the cut surface. The CM developed in the present study was validated in comparison with the residual stress distribution determined by a well-established neutron-diffraction residual stress instrument (RSI) instrumented in HANARO neutron research reactor.
In most LMFBR(Liquid Metal Fast Breed Reactor) design, the operating temperature is very high and the time-dependent creep and stress-rupture effects become so important in reactor structural design. Therefore, unlike with conventional PWR, the normal operating conditions can be basically dominant design loading because the hold time at elevated temperature condition is so long and enough to result in severe total creep ratcheting strains during total service lifetime. In this paper, elevated temperature design of the conceptually designed baffle annulus regions of KALIMER(Korea Advanced Liquid MEtal Reactor) reactor internal strictures is carried out for normal operating conditions which have the operating temperature 53$0^{\circ}C$ and the total service lifetime of 30 years. For the elevated temperature design of reactor internal structures, the ASME Code Case N-201-4 is used. Using this code, the time-dependent stress limits, the accumulated total inelastic strain during service lifetime, and the creep-fatigue damages are evaluated with the calculation results by the elastic analysis under conservative assumptions. The application procedures of elevated temperature design of the reactor internal structures using ASME Code Case N-201-4 with the elastic analysis method are described step by step in detail. This paper will be useful guide for actual application of elevated temperature design of various reactor types accounting for creep and stress-rupture effects.
In this study, we observed the surface morphology of amorphous silicon annealed at $700{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$ for recrystallization. In case of $700{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ annealing, deposited amorphous silicon have the saturated XRD intensity and decreased surface roughness after annealing for 3 hours. It is thought that surface roughness of amorphous silicon increases because of contributions caused by atomic rearrangement of surface, for instance, surface stress etc., in the course of recrystallinzation and decrease because of the relaxation of stress by annealing in reaching completion of recrystallization. In case of $1000^{\circ}C$ annealing, the effect of grain size on deposited silicon is more effective than that of surface roughness. These results show that small grain silicon has the stronger dependence on surface roughness than large grain one.
Liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) of biomolecules, a newly-found phase behavior of molecules in the liquid phase, has shown to its relationship to various biological function and misfolding diseases. Extensive studies have increasingly revealed a general mechanism of LLPS and characterized the liquid droplet; ho wever, intermolecular interactions of proteins and structural states of LLPS-inducing proteins inside of the droplet remain largely unknown. Solution NMR spectroscopy has emerged as a powerful approach as it provides invaluable information on protein intermolecular interactions and structures at the atomic and residue level. We herein comprehensively address useful techniques of solution NMR including the effect of paramagnetic relaxation enhancement for the study on the LLPS and droplet based on recent studies.
We have investigated the effects of H atoms on thin film growth processes and surface reactions. In the oxidation of Si, Si surfaces are passivated against the $O_2$ adsorption by terminating dangling bonds with H atoms. Moreover, the existence of Si-H bonds on Si(100) surfaces enhances the structural relaxation of Si-O-Si bonds due to a charge transfer from Si-Si back bonds. In the heteroepitaxial growth of a Si/Ge/Si(100) system, H atoms suppress the segregation of Ge atoms into Si overlayers since the exchange of Ge atoms with Si atoms bound with H must be accompanied with breaking of Si-H bonds. However, 3-dimensional island growth is also promoted by atomic H irradiation, which is considered to result from the suppression of surface migration of adsorbed reaction species and from the lowering of step energies by the H termination of dangling bonds.
The morphology of deformation induced dislocations in polycrystalline $Ni_3$(Al, Cr) containing $M_{23}C_6$ precipitates has been investigated in terms of transmission electron microscopy(TEM). Fine Polyhedral precipitates of $M_{23}C_6$ appeared in the matrix by aging at temperatures around 973 K after solution annealing at 1423 K. TEM examination revealed that the $M_{23}C_6$ phase and the matrix lattices have a cube-cube orientation relationship and keep partial atomic matching at the {111} interface. After deformation at temperature below 973 K, typical Orowan loops were observed surrounding the $M_{23}C_6$ particles. At higher deformation temperatures, the Orowan loops disappeared and the morphology of dislocations at the particle-matrix interfaces suggested the existence of attractive interaction between dislocations and particles. The change of the interaction modes between dislocation and particles with increasing deformation temperature can be considered as a result of strain relaxation at the interface bet ween matrix and particles.

When an electron is transferred to $C_{60}$, the bond structure is distorted due to the electron-lattice interaction and a polaron-like state is formed. The evolution process of the bond distortion is studied by the dynamical equation of atomic lattice, and time-dependent changes of the bond lengths are determined. Then it can be estimated that the relaxation time to form the polaron-like state is a fraction of a picosecond.
We analyze the transverse nuclear magnetizations of 129Xe and 131Xe in a vapor cell containing natural Xe, 87Rb, and buffer gases. Th e Xe atoms are polarized th rough spin-exch ange optical pumping (SEOP) with Rb atoms under low-magnetic-field conditions. From the free-induction-decay (FID) signal, we measure the nuclear magnetization of the Xe atoms in the Xe-Rb vapor cell. Furthermore, we measure the dependence of the gyromagnetic ratio on the magnetization of 129Xe and 131Xe by examining the amplitude of the FID signal of each isotope, and we evaluate the relationship between the magnetic field gradient and transverse relaxation rate for both of the 129Xe and 131Xe isotopes.
