  • Rubber particles emitted from automobile tire tread by abrasion were collected by Andersen sampler with atmospheric dusts. The samples of atmospheric dusts at each stage were analysed for rubber particles by Curie point pyrolysis-gas chromatography with Apiezon grease L column. Pyrolysis was done at 740$^circ$C for 5 seconds. In the pyrogram, NR rubber (bus and truck tire tread) was determined by isoprene peak, and SBR rubber (passenger car tire tread) was determined by styrene peak simultaneously. The size distribution of rubber particles was proportioned with the size of rubber particles. The concentrations of NR and SBR rubber were 0.23 $\mug/m^3$ and 1.31 $\mug/m^3$, respectively, in the atmospheric dusts which were collected from the street in front of Yonsei University on April 1986. The ratio of tire tread rubber in the atmospheric dusts was about 0.63%.

  • Chemical Accident Response Information System (CARIS) which has been designed for the efficient emergency response of chemical accidents produces the real-time atmospheric fields through the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System, RAMS. The previous studies were emphasized that improving an initial input data had more effective results in developing prediction ability of atmospheric model. In a continuous effort to improve an initial input data, we replaced the land-use dataset using in the RAMS, which is a high resolution USGS digital data constructed in April, 1993, with the latest land-use data of the Korea Ministry of Environment over the South Korea and simulated atmospheric fields for developing a real-time prediction in dispersion of chemicals. The results showed that the new land-use data was written in a standard RAMS format and shown the modified surface characteristics and the landscape heterogeneity resulting from land-use change. In the results of sensitivity experiment we got the improved atmospheric fields and assured that it will give more reliable real-time atmospheric fields to all users of CARIS for the dispersion forecast in associated with hazardous chemical releases as well as general air pollutants.

  • Biomass burning activities(BBA) are caused by both natural and anthropogenic origins. Due to emissions of greenhouse gases and atmospheric aerosols during the burning process, BBA has been known to be one of important sources of atmospheric pollution and the climate change. However, the monitoring of BBA and its effects on atmospheric environment are not simple. This study evaluates the trends of BBA and its impact on atmospheric environment by using earth observing satellite. The results show that the most BBA were found over ever green, green vegetation types, and irrigated land cover types in study region. The trends of BBA and aerosol optical thickness which represents relative aerosol loading in the atmosphere, show similar pattern. Aerosol increases caused by BBA highlight the effectiveness of these mechanisms and would affect the regional atmospheric environment and climate change.

  • The aerosol extinction vertical profile and surface visibility have been derived from the Microtops-II sunphotometer observation during the winter 2011 intensive observation period (IOP) at Seoul, Korea. Using models of degradation of aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and aerosol scale height, we have performed extinction-visibility modulation to determine the height dependent aerosol extinction and visibility. It is shown that the aerosol loading is relatively low during IOP (mean $AOT_{550}=0.22{\pm}0.08$, ${\AA}$ngstr$\ddot{o}$m exponent=$1.14{\pm}0.26$). Modeled extinction by use of Microtops II sunphotometer data shows good agreement with measurements by the Multi-wavelenth Polarization Lidar (MPoLAR), and the derived surface visibility are consistent with data from the transmissometer. These results emphasize the use of a vertically resolved extinction from AOT to predict visibility conditions at ground level.

  • Atmospheric deposition and riverine waters were sampled throughout a year, to estimate the loading fluxes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into the Masan Bay and its vicinity, Korea. Atmospheric deposition fluxes of total PAHs in the surveyed area varied from 62.2 to 464 ${\mu}g/m^2/year$. Concentration of total PAHs in water samples from six rivers ranged from 34.6 to 239 ng/L. Contribution of the carcinogenic PAHs to the total PAHs occupied $38\%$ and $50\%$ for atmospheric deposition and river waters, respectively. Atmospheric deposition fluxes and water concentrations of PAHs were slightly low or moderate to those in locations from some countries. Correspondence analysis was used to investigate the loading characteristics of PAHs according to transport routes. Atmospheric deposition samples were corresponded to higher molecular aromatics of PAHs, while riverine water samples were associated with lower molecular weight of PAHs. The results indicate that the higher-molecular-weight PAHs can be primarily transported by atmosphere deposition and the lower-molecular-weight PAHs can be mainly contaminated by riverine discharge into the Masan Bay and its vicinity. Loadings fluxes of PAHs into the Masan Bay and its vicinity were 39.2 g/day via atmosphere and 10.3 g/day via rivers, showing that atmospheric input was about 4 times higher than riverine one. Therefore, in order to minimize the contamination burden of PAHs from terrestrial sources to the Masan Bay and its vicinity, the control and management of PAHs deriving from atmosphere will be necessary.
