  • This work is focussed on the reduction of ethanol separation energy from alcohol fermented broth and categorized into the development of a computer program for the design of the pressurized/depressurized distillation process which has been regarded as one of the energy-reducing models for the conventional distillation process, the optimization of operating conditions of distillation towers by means of the developed program, and the evaluation of the total annual energy cost of pressurized/depressurized distillation columns compared with that of the conventional single distillation columns. The operating pressures are, in case of pressurized/depressurized distillation, 3103/760 mmHg, 3103/450 mmHg, 3103/160 mmHg, and in case of conventional distillation, 760 mmHg. The optimum reflex rations which the sum of the annual energy cost and the annual fixed cost for each process becomes minimum are 3.7475/2.9111 for the operating pressures of 3103/760 mmHg, 3.814/2.9712 for 3103/450 mmHg, 3.0783/2.2400 for 3103/150 mmHg, and 3.8544 for the atmospheric operating pressure. And the annual energy cost of pressurized/depressurized distillation process for the above-mentioned operating pressures is distributed between 42% and 47% of that of conventional distillation process.

  • The phenomena that we experience in everyday life such as snow, rain, wind, and temperature are referred to as weather, and the average state of atmospheric phenomena that occur over a long period of time in a specific region is referred to as climate. In addition, significant variation of climate compared to the average state is referred to as climate change. Concrete structures can have various problems when exposed to elements. Among the problems, the freeze-thaw problem due to extreme climatic factors such as heavy rain and snowfall has become a particularly significant issue recently. The concrete that has been subjected to repeated freeze-thaw rather than too high or low temperature shows serious degradation of durability, and the performance of structures with degraded performance is difficult to recover. Therefore, in this study, concrete durability performance with respect to freeze-thaw from curing conditions change due to wind speed and sunshine exposure time. Concrete freeze-thaw experiment are performed. using wind speed and sunlight exposure time. Also, performance based evaluation through the satisfaction curve based on the freeze-thaw test results are performed.

  • Future satellite communication systems will be developed at Ka-band (20/30 GHz) owing to the relatively wide frequency allocation and current freedom from terrestrial interference for multimedia services. A serious disadvantage of the Ka-band, however, is the very high atmospheric attenuation in rainy weather. Synchronous CDMA drastically redces the effect of self-noise with several interesting features of CDMA for mobile communications such as fixible freuqncy rese, the capability of performin soft-handover and a lower sensitivity to interference. This paper evaluates the performance of a synchronous CDMA reture link for a Ka-band geostationary satellite communication system. For a fixed satellite channel whose characteristics depend on weather conditions, the signal envelope and phase for this channel is modelled as Gaussian. The bit error and outage probability, and the detection loss due to imperfect chip timing synchronization is analytically evaluated and the system capacity degaradation due to the weather condition is estimated. The two cases consist of the general case in which all users are affected by rain condition, and the worst case in which the reference user is only affected by rain attenuation. the results for two cases of rain condition clearly show that synchronous CDMA eases the power control requirements and has less sensitivity to imperfect power control.

  • The effect of various packaging methods on Kimchi quality was investigated in order to develop the packaging techniques for preventing commercial Kimchi Products from ination and explosion due to fermentative gas evolved during storage and distribution. Kimchi was packaged in different methods; atmospheric (AP), check-valved (CV), double (DP) and vacuum (VP) packaging. The quality of Kimchi during storage at $10^{\circ}C$ was evaluated ill terms of gas composition, free volume, pH, titratable acidity, color index, lactic acid bacteria and sensory properties. $O_2$ concentration decreased to about 1% at $6{\sim}8$ days of optimal ripening time in all packages except DP, in which it remained around 20%. $CO_2$ concentration reached $70{\sim}90%$ after $6{\sim}8$ days in AP, CV and DP, while it stayed around 10% in DP. The free volume in AP had typical sigmoidal curve similar to $CO_2$ concentration changes. It remained almost constant in CV and DP, but started to increase at the late stage of storage In VP. There was no significant influence of packaging methods on the other quality attributes such as pH, titratable acidity, color index (L.b/a), lactic acid bacteria count and sensory evaluation score. As results, it could be proposed to employ CV and DP method as the effective packaging techniques for preventing commercial Kimchi products from inflation.

  • Concentrations of fine particulate matter ($PM_{2.5}$) and several of its particle constituents measured outside homes in Houston, Texas, and Los Angeles, California, were characterized using multiple regression analysis with proximity to point and mobile sources and meteorological factors as the independent variables. $PM_{2.5}$ mass and the concentrations of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), benzo-[a]-pyrene (BaP), perylene (Per), benzo-[g,h,i]-perylene (BghiP), and coronene (Cor) were examined. Negative associations of wind speed with concentrations demonstrated the effect of dilution by high wind speed. Atmospheric stability increase was associated with concentration increase. Petrochemical source proximity was included in the EC model in Houston. Area source proximity was not selected for any of the $PM_{2.5}$ constituents' regression models. When the median values of the meteorological factors were used and the proximity to sources varied, the air concentrations calculated using the models for the eleven $PM_{2.5}$ constituents outside the homes closest to influential highways were 1.5-15.8 fold higher than those outside homes furthest from the highway emission sources. When the median distance to the sources was used in the models, the concentrations of the $PM_{2.5}$ constituents varied 2 to 82 fold, as the meteorological conditions varied over the observed range. We found different relationships between the two urban areas, illustrating the unique nature of urban sources and suggesting that localized sources need to be evaluated carefully to understand their potential contributions to $PM_{2.5}$ mass and its particle constituents concentrations near residences, which influence baseline indoor air concentrations and personal exposures. The results of this study could assist in the appropriate design of monitoring networks for community-level sampling and help improve the accuracy of exposure models linking emission sources with estimated pollutant concentrations at the residential level.

  • Nanosized $TiO_2$ particles were prepared from titanium (IV) sulfate solution using base solutions at low reaction temperature ($95^{\circ}C$) and atmospheric pressure by hydrothermal precipitation method without calcination. The effects of preparation conditions, such as kind of base solutions (NaOH, $NH_4OH$, Monoethanolamine, Diethanolamine, Triethanolamine) and surfactants (CTAB, Span 20, SDBS), concentration of surfactants, temperature and pH, on the physical properties of $TiO_2$ particles have been investigated by XRD, SEM and Zeta-potential meter. Absorption area was also investigated by DRS in order to confirm the photocatalytic activity of the nanosized $TiO_2$ particles. It was turned out that, among base solutions, NaOH provides the smallest $TiO_2$ particles with excellent crystallinity. And cationic surfactant (CTAB) prepared smaller $TiO_2$ particles than any other surfactants. When CTAB is added in the concentration ratio of $Ti(SO_4)_2$:CTAB=10:1, $TiO_2$ particles with particle diameter of 5.8 nm were prepared. This is approximately 1/10 of that prepared without CTAB.

  • Launch vehicles are subject to airborne acoustic loads during atmospheric flight and these effects become pronounced especially in transonic region. As the vibration due to the acoustic loads can cause malfunction of payloads, it is essential to predict and reduce the acoustic loads. In this study, a complete process has been developed for predicting airborne vibro-acoustic environment inside the payload pairing and subsequent noise reduction procedure employing acoustic blankets and Helmholtz resonators. Acoustic loads were predicted by Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) analysis and a semi-empirical model for pressure fluctuation inside turbulent boundary layer. Coupled vibro-acoustic analysis was performed using VA One SEA's Finite Element Statistical Energy Analysis (FE-SEA) hybrid module and ANSYS APDL. The process has been applied to a hammerhead launch vehicle to evaluate the effect of acoustic load reduction and accordingly to verify the effectiveness of the process. The presently developed process enables to obtain quick analysis result with reasonable accuracy and thus is expected to be useful in the initial design phase of a launch vehicle.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop e-learning contents and to examine how ICT-powered instruction using the developed e-learning contents affects the science achievements of students and how the students respond to that. After an experiment in the 7th class of the weather condition unit in high school earth science, e-learning contents were prepared by using the videotaped material and flash animation to teach key learning points. The selected two different classes, experimental and control groups, shows almost the same final scores in the first semester. The experimental group received ICT-powered instruction with the contents developed in the study, and the control group received a typical expository lesson. And then the achievement test was done to these two groups, separately. The major findings of the study were as follows: As for the effects of ICT-powered instruction on the academic achievement, the average scores of the experimental group is higher than that of the control group, but the difference is insignificant. When each group was subdivided into the upper and lower groups, the upper group got higher average scores and the difference was significant. But there was no significant disparity between the lower groups. Therefore, the ICT-powered instruction using the e-learning contents gives a good effect on the students whose levels are higher than the average. In the questionaike about the ICT instruction, they generally had a positive opinion about its impact on learning interest and class participation and its learning effects.

  • This study has been conducted from April 25, 1999 to June 25, 1999 in Jeju Province in order to determine the influence of seeding date on growth, yield and chemical composition of Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) Delaying the seeding date from April 25 to June 25 decreased the plant height of Kenaf from 278.5 cm to 205.7 cm. As for the number of leaves, number of withering leaves, number of branches, and stem diameter decreased as the seeding date was delayed. As the seeding date was delayed, fresh forage yield decreased from 98.5MT/㏊ to 45.9MT/㏊, dry matter yield from 20.7MT/㏊ to 8.2MT/㏊, crude protein (CP) yield from 2.9MT/ha to 1.3MT/ha and total digestible nutrients (TDN) yield form 1l.6MT/㏊ to 5MT/㏊. However, both leaf yield and stem yield were nearly the same tendency. Delaying the seeding date from April 25 to June 25 increased crude protein contents of leaves from 21.5% to 24.4%, crude fat contents from 5.2% to 6.1%, nitrogen free extract (NFE) contents form 39.9% to 41.2% and TDN contents from 64.3% to 69.7%. However, delaying seeding date decreased crude fiber contents from 20.8% to 17.5%, and crude ash contents from 7.9% to 7.0%. Based on the these findings, optimum seeding date for forage production of Kenaf seems to be about 25 April in atmospheric phenomena and volcanic ash soils of Jeju island.

  • Portland cement production is under critical review due to high amount of $CO_2$ gas released to the atmosphere. Attempts to increase the utilization of fly ash, a by-products from thermal power plant to partially replace the cement in concrete are gathering momentum. But most of fly ash is currently dumped in landfills, thus creating a threat to the environment. Many researches on alkali-activated concrete that does not need the presence of cement as a binder have been carried out recently. Instead, the source of material such as fly ash, that are rich in Silicon(Si) and Aluminium(Al), are activated by alkaline liquids to produce the binder. Hence concrete with no cement is effective in the reduction of $CO_2$ gas. In this study, we investigated the influence of the compressive strength of mortar on alkaline activator and curing condition in order to develop cementless fly ash based alkali-activated concrete. In view of the results, we found out that it was possible for us to make alkali-activated mortar with 70MPa at the age of 28days by using alkaline activator manufactured as 1:1 the mass ratio of 9M NaOH and sodium silicate and applying the atmospheric curing after high temperature at $60^{\circ}C$ for 48hours.
