Influences of orographic and ocean effect, which depend on the detailed geographic characteristics, upon winter time (December-February) precipitation in the Yeongdong region are investigated. Most of precipitation events in the Yeongdong region during the wintertime are associated with moist northeasterly (coming from the northeast direction) winds and also the spatial distribution of precipitation shows a great difference between Mountain area (Daegwallyeong) and Coastal area (Gangneung). The linear correlation coefficient between the meteorological variables obtained from NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis Data and precipitation amount for each precipitation type is calculated. Mountain type precipitation is dominated by northeasterly wind speed of the low level (1000 hPa and 925 hPa) and characterized with more precipitation in mountain area than coastal area. However, Coastal type precipitation is affected by temperature difference between ocean and atmosphere, and characterized with more precipitation in coastal area than mountain area. The results are summarized as follows; In the case of mountain type precipitation, the correlation coefficient between wind speed at 1000 hPa (925 hPa) and precipitation amount at Daegwallyeong is 0.60 (0.61). The correlation is statistical significant at 1% level. In the case of coastal type precipitation, the correlation coefficient of temperature difference between ocean and 925 hPa (850 hPa) over the East sea area and precipitation amount at Gangneung is 0.33 (0.34). As for the mountain type precipitation, a detailed analysis was conducted in order to verify the relationship between precipitation amount at Daegwallyeong and low level wind speed data from wind profiler in Gangneung and Buoy in the East Sea. The results also show the similar behavior. This result indicates that mountain type precipitation in the Yeongdong region is closely related with easterly wind speed. Thus, the statistical analysis of the few selected meteorological variables can be a good indicator to estimate the precipitation totals in the Yeongdong region in winter time.

KEOP (Korea Enhanced Observing Period)-2004 intensive summer observation was carried out from 20 June to 5 July 2004 over the Southwestern part of the Korean peninsula. In this study, the effects of KEOP-2004 intensive observation data on the simulation of precipitation system are investigated using KLAPS (Korea Local Analysis and Prediction System) and PSU/NCAR MM5. Three precipitation cases during the intensive observation are selected for detailed analysis. In addition to the control experiments using the traditional data for its initial and boundary conditions, two sensitivity experiments using KEOP data with and without Jindo radar are performed. Although it is hard to find a clear and consistent improvement in the verification score (threat score), it is found that the KEOP data play a role in improving the position and intensity of the simulated precipitation system. The experiments started at 00 and 12 UTC show more positive effect than those of 06 and 18 UTC. The effect of Jindo radar is dependent on the case. It plays a significant role in the heavy rain cases related to a mesoscale low over Changma front and the landing of a Typhoon. KEOP data produce more strong difference in the 06/18 UTC experiments than in 00/12 UTC, but give more positive effects in 00/12 UTC experiments. One of the possible explanations for this is that : KEOP data could properly correct the atmosphere around them when there are certain amounts of data, while gives excessive effect to the atmospheric field when there are few data. CRA analysis supports this reasoning. According to the CRA (Contiguous Rain Area) analysis, KEOP data in 00/12 UTC experiments improve only the surrounding area, resulting in essentially same precipitation system so the effects remain only in each convective cell rather than the system itself. On the other hand, KEOP data modify the precipitation system itself in 06/18 UTC experiments. Therefore the effects become amplified with time integration.
This study investigates the accuracy of short-term ocean predictions during the development of ocean stratification for the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) Global Seasonal Forecast System version 5 (GloSea5) as well as the effect of atmosphere-ocean coupling on the predictions through a series of sensitive numerical experiments. Model performance is evaluated using the marine meteorological buoys at seas around the Korean peninsular (KP), Tropical Atmosphere Ocean project (TAO) buoys over the tropical Pacific ocean, and ARGO floats data over the western North Pacific for boreal winter (February) and spring (May). Sensitive experiments are conducted using an ocean-atmosphere coupled model (i.e., GloSea5) and an uncoupled ocean model (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean, NEMO) and their results are compared. The verification results revealed an overall good performance for the SST predictions over the tropical Pacific ocean and near the Korean marginal seas, in which the Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE) were $0.31{\sim}0.45^{\circ}C$ and $0.74{\sim}1.11^{\circ}C$ respectively, except oceanic front regions with large spatial and temporal SST variations (the maximum error reached up to $3^{\circ}C$). The sensitive numerical experiments showed that GloSea5 outperformed NEMO over the tropical Pacific in terms of bias and RMSE analysis, while NEMO outperformed GloSea5 near the KP regions. These results suggest that the atmosphere-ocean coupling substantially influences the short-term ocean forecast over the tropical Pacific, while other factors such as atmospheric forcing and the accuracy of simulated local current are more important than the coupling effect for the KP regions being far from tropics during the development of ocean stratification.
The effect of artificial changes in geographical features on local wind was analyzed at the construction site of bridge and fill-up bank in the southern part of Haui-do. Geographic Information System (GIS) data and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model were used in this study. Three-dimensional numerical topography based on the GIS data for the target area was constructed for the surface boundary input data of the CFD model. The wind observations at an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) located in Haui-do were used to set-up the model inflows. The seasonal simulations were conducted. The differences in surface wind speed between after and before artificial changes in geographical features were analyzed. The surface wind speed decreases 5 to 20% at the south-western part and below 2% of the spatial average for salt field. There was also marked the effect of artificial changes in geographical features on local wind in the westerly wind case for the target area.
Air quality planning and management requires accurate and consistent records of the air quality parameters. Limited number of monitoring stations and inconsistent measurements of the air quality parameters is a very serious problem in many parts of India. It becomes difficult for the authorities to plan proactive measures with such a limited data. Estimation models can be developed using soft computing techniques considering the physics behind pollution dispersion as they can work very well with limited data. They are more realistic and can present the complete picture about the air quality. In the present case study spatio-temporal models using Linear Genetic Programming (LGP) have been developed for estimation of air quality parameters. The air quality data from four monitoring stations of an Indian city has been used and LGP models have been developed to estimate pollutant concentration of the fifth station. Three types of models are developed. In the first type, models are developed considering only the pollutant concentrations at the neighboring stations without considering the effect of distance between the stations as well the significance of the prevailing wind direction. Second type of models are distance based models based on the hypothesis that there will be atmospheric interactions between the two stations under consideration and the effect increases with decrease in the distance between the two. In third type the effect of the prevailing wind direction is also considered in choosing the input stations in wind and distance based models. Models are evaluated using Band Error and it was observed that majority of the errors are in +/-1 band.
This paper presents a numerical analysis of flow inside a water nozzle for fire fighting and observes the effect of the variation in primary components on internal flow. In order to observe the performance of water nozzles, they have been systematically designed and modelled, applying boundary conditions obtained from field experiments (inlet pressure at pump : 4 bar, and pressure outlet : atmospheric pressure). In addition, the governing equations were calculated to obtain velocity, pressure inside the nozzle. Two main parameters (the presence and length of sub-pipes) were considered with the aim to observe the detail internal flow characteristics. It is found that the base model is not significant on flow characteristics, but a negative effect (i. e. the reverse flow) at the entrance region of sub-pipe. On the other hand, the reverse flow was vanished when making the length of sub-pipe double.
A novel technique for fine particle beam focusing under the atmospheric pressure is introduced using a radiation pressure assisted aerodynamic lens. To introduce the radiation pressure in the aerodynamic focusing system, a 25 mm plano-convex lens having 2.5 mm hole at its center is used as an orifice. The particle beam width is measured for various laser power, particle size, and flow velocity. In addition, the effect of the laser characteristics on the beam focusing is evaluated comparing an Ar-Ion continuous wave laser and a pulsed Nd-YAG laser. For the pure aerodynamic focusing system, the particle beam width was decreased as increasing particle size and Reynolds number. For the particle diameter of 0.5 ${\mu}m$, the particle beam was broken due to the secondary flow at Reynolds number of 694. Using the Ar-Ion CW laser, the particle beam width becomes smaller than that of the pure aerodynamic focusing system about 16 %, 11.4 % and 9.6 % for PSL particle size of 2.5 ${\mu}m$, 1.0 ${\mu}m$, and 0.5 ${\mu}m$ respectively at the Reynolds number of 320. Particle beam width was minimized around the laser power of 0.2 W. However, as increasing the laser power higher than 0.4 W, the particle beam width was increased a little and it approached almost a constant value which is still smaller than that of the pure aerodynamic focusing system. The radiation pressure effect on the particle beam width is intensified as Reynolds number decreases or particle size increases relatively. On the other hand, using 30 Hz pulsed Nd-YAG laser, the effect of the radiation pressure on the particle beam width was not distinct unlike Ar-Ion CW laser.

This study was carried out to analyze the effect of wind load on the stability of a 50ton container crane using wind tunnel test and provide a container crane designer with data which can be used in a wind resistance design of a container crane assuming that a wind load at 75m/s wind velocity is applied on a container crane. Data acquisition conditions for this experiment were established in accordance with the similarity. The scale of a container crane dimension, wind velocity and time were chosen as 1/200, 1/13.3 and 1/15. And this experiment was implemented in an Effect type atmospheric boundary-layer wind tunnel with $11.52m^2$ cross-section area. Each directional drag and overturning moment coefficients were investigated and uplift forces at each supporting point due to the wind load were analyzed.
Hitherto there have been by and large three different approaches to the installation works of Olafur Eliasson; a soma-aethetic, politico-aesthetic and techno-aesthetic. But none of these provides us with the aesthetic descriptions of the light effect. This failure seems to arise from the lack of the conceptual tools suit for describing the atmospheric effect of 'light'. The symbolism of light, or the theological optics of Middle Age may help us to compensate for the lack of appropriate concepts needed for theorizing the effect of light used very frequently by contemporary installation artists. And this medieval aesthetics of light can also of service to elucidate some essential characteristics of the digtal visual culture in general.
The study on the wake vortex behavior during the aircraft's take-off and landing flight phase is critical to the flight safety of the aircraft, following close behind and the economy of the airport. The study on the wake vortex behavior should include the understanding of the ground effect on the behavior of the multiple wake vortices, generated from aircraft during the take-off and landing flight phase. In thia study, numerical schemes that can consider the ground effect were devised, by applying a vorticity boundary condition and an image method into the existing two-dimensional Fourier-spectral method. The present method was validated by comparing the present results, with the computed and measured data in the published literature. It was shown that the present method can predict the generation and behavior of the secondary vortex near the ground with reasonable accuracy. In future, the effect of the atmospheric conditions such as the stratification and the wind shear on the behavior of the vortex pair will be studied.
