  • Cause of excessive vibration with twice the rotational speed of a two-pole generator rotor for the fossil power plants was investigated. The two-pole generator rotor, treated as a typically asymmetric rotor in vibration analysis, produces asynchronous vibration with twice the rotational speed, sub-harmonic critical speeds, and potentially unstable operating zones due to its own inertia and/or stiffness asymmetry. This paper introduces a practical balancing procedure, and presents the results of the investigation on sources of the excessive vibration based on the experimental vibration data of the asymmetric two-pole rotor in balancing.

  • Asymmetric beams cause complicated vibration phenomena due to the inherent bending-torsion coupled vibration. In this paper, an exact dynamic element matrix for the bending-torsion coupled vibration of asymmetric beam is derived. An application of the derived exact dynamic element matrix is demonstrated by an illustrative example, wherein the natural frequencies by the proposed modeling method are compared with those available in the literature. Another numerical example is also illustrated which deals with a general beam with joints. The numerical study shows that the exact dynamic element model is useful for the dynamic analysis of asymmetric bending-torsion coupled beams.

  • Impulse response of a slightly asymmetric cylindrical shell is derived. Receptance method is applied to obtain the vibration mode and natural frequency of the slightly asymmetric cylindrical shell. Impulse response model is used to identify the vibration beat characteristics of King Song-Dok Bell. The theretical mode is compared and verified by the measured mode of King Song-Dok Bell. • Although asymmetric beams are widely used in industry, few research results are available on the dynamic modeling and analysis of structure including asymmetric beams. Asymmetric beams cause complicated vibration phenomena due to the inherent bending-torsion coupled vibration. In this paper, an exact dynamic element matrix for the bending-torsion coupled vibration of asymmetric beam is derived. The application of the derived exact dynamic element matrix is demonstrated by some illustrative examples wherein the natural frequencies by the proposed modeling method are compared with those available in the literature. Another numerical example is also illustrated which deals with a general beam with joints. The numerical study shows that the exact dynamic element model is useful for the dynamic analysis of asymmetric bending-torsion coupled beams.

  • The large generator rotor used in fossil power plant has the possibility of high 2X vibration due to asymmetric shaft stiffness. The generator rotor is machined into pole faces to reduce stiffness difference and then is tested through 2X vibration measurement when the balancing works are performed in the balancing shop. However, there are many cases of large difference values between 2X vibration in the balancing shop and 2X vibration in site. This paper presents a new method to estimate 2X vibration in site with more accuracy and applied for the retrofit of a fossil 400 MW class deteriorated generator. It shows that the new generator rotor is manufactured with a good 2X vibration characteristics and is operated in a low 2X vibration level although the generator rotor has high 2X vibration in the balancing shop.

  • Analytical model of beat response is derived on a slightly asymmetric ring and is veryfied by experiment. The asymmetric ring is a simplified model used to explain the beat property of a Korean bell. The asymmetric ring has mode pair having slight frequency difference in each radial mode. Each mode pair produces beat phenomenon by the interaction of the two close frequency components. Based on the analytical model, beat maps are first proposed and characteristics of beat on the circumference are detaily explained.

  • An investigation into asymmetric vibrations of a clamped circular place under a harmonic excitation is made. We examine a primary resonance. in which the frequency of excitation is near the natural frequency of an asymmetric mode of the plate. We found not only a response haying the form of standing wave but also one having the form of traveling wave, which was not observed by Sridhar, Mook and ${Nayfeh}^{(1)}$

  • In this study, we experimentally investigate the equivalent ring theory for a slightly asymmetric ring. The slightly asymmetric ring has mode pair and frequency pair due to the small asymmetry and this mode pair generates beat in vibration and sound. In this paper, a slightly asymmetric ring is modeled as the equivalent ring, i.e., the assemblage of a symmetric ring and imperfect point masses. The equivalent ring has the same mode pair condition as that of the original asymmetric ring. Effect of the additional mass attachment is investigated by the equivalent ring theory and the result is compared with those of the measurement and the finite element analysis. It is confirmed that the original ring and the equivalent ring show the same change in frequency and mode under the various additional imperfection mass conditions. The equivalent ring theory explains how the asymmetric elements influence the mode characteristics and provides useful information to tune the beat property.
