  • Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy was used to investigate the effect of irradiation dose on the ESR signal intensity of irradiated crabs and the stability of these radicals under 9 weeks of storage. Swimming and small crabs were irradiated with doses of 0, 1, 3, 5 and 7 kGy using a Co-60 irradiator at ambient temperature. A claw, a walking leg and a cars- pace of the crab pieced and dried were placed in a resonant quart tube within an EPR X-band spectrometer. The irradiated crabs presented an asymmetric absorption in shape at g$_1$=2.002 $\pm$ 0.003 and g$_2$=1.998$\pm$0.005, and were different from the non-irradiated ones. The intensity of the ESR signals was greatest in the claw, intermediate in the carapace and lowest in the walking leg. Samples given low and high doses of irradiation could also be distinguished. The ESR signal after irradiation was stable, even after a 9-week storage.

  • The Jahn-Teller distortion of chalcogenide $Fe_{0.9}M_{0.1}Cr_2S_4$ (M=Co, Ni, Zn) have been investigated by M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy. The crystal structures of $Fe_{0.9}M_{0.1}Cr_2S_4$ (M=Co, Ni, Zn) are cubic spinel at room temperature. Magnetoresistance measurements indicate these system is conducting-semiconducting transistion around $T_C$. Below $T_C$, the asymmetric line broadening is observed and considered to be dynamic Jahn-Teller distortion. Isomer shift value of the samples at room temperature was about 0.5 mm/s, which means that charge state of Fe ions is ferrous in character. The Ni substitutions for Fe occur to increase the Jahn-Teller relaxation. CMR properties could be explained with magnetic polaron due to Jahn-Teller effect, which is different from both the double exchange interactions of manganite system and the triple exchange interactions of chalcogenide $Cu_xFe_{1-x}Cr_2S_4$.

  • Polymeric membranes consisting of poly(d,1-lactide) as a polymer matrix and crystallizable progesterone as a drug were prepared by coagulating polymeric solutions. The homogeneous casting solutions in dimethyformamide were solidified by using three different coagulating processes : solvent evaporation under vacuum, solvent extraction via immersion into the nonsolvent bath, or vapor exposure at high humidity condition. With solvent removal via evaporation under vacuum, the cast solution film was vitrified to form a homogeneous film containing progesterone of spherical shape distributed evenly in the film. Being prepared by solvent extraction via immersion into a water bath, the resulting membrane showed an asymmetric structure, with progesterone of big crystallites distributed unevenly in the structure. On the other hand, the coagulation under high humidity transformed the cast film into a sponge-like structure, where progesterone took a shape like flake.

  • Electron-phonon interaction plays a significant role in forming of colossal magnetoresistance effect (CMR). Polaron formation was observed by neutron diffraction and by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis. Local probe as given by the EXAFS is a useful method to study the polaronic charge and its dependence on temperature and ions size. Here we present the EXAFS study of polaronic charge in La/sub 0.7/Ca/sub 0.3-X/Ba/sub X/MnO₃ compositions. The single phase La/sub 0.7/Ca/sub 0.3-X/Ba/sub X/MnO₃ manganites (x=0; 0.03; 0.06, ..., 0.3) were prepared by ceramic technology [1]. The Curie temperature was determined by extrapolation of the temperature dependence of the magnetization (down to zero magnetization). EXAFS experiments were carried out at the 7C EC beam line of the Pohang Light Source (PLS) in Korea. The atomic pair distribution functions (PDF) were obtained by re-regularization method [2] from filtered spectra. The PDF for the x=0.3 sample showed a single peak function and for x=0.0, 0.03, 0.06, 0.09, 0.12 compositions were asymmetric in agreement with a small Jahn-Teller elongation of two (short and long) bonds of the MnO/sub 6/ octahedron. Dispersion, σ/sub Min-O//sup 2/, and asymmetry, σ/sub Min-O//sup 3/, of the Mn-O bond distances varied significantly with x and showed a maximums at x=0.09. The maximum of σ/sub Min-O//sup 2/ is caused by increase of dynamic rms displacements of the Mn-O distances near the T/sub C/. The observed x dependence of σ/sub Min-O//sup 3/ reflects the reduction of charge carriers mobility at approaching to T/sub C/ from low as well as high temperatures.

  • Ferromagnetic tunnel junctions, Ta/Cu/Ta/NiFe/Cu/$Mn_{75}$ $Ir_{25}$ $Co_{70}$ $Fe_{30}$/Al-oxide, were fabricated by do magnetron sputtering and plasma oxidation process. The effect of annealing temperature on the local transport properties of the ferromagnetic tunnel junctions was studied using contact-mode Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The current images reflected the distribution of the barrier height determined by local I-V analysis. The contrast of the current image became more homogeneous and smooth after annealing at $280^{\circ}C$. And the average barrier height $\phi_{ave}$ increased and its standard deviation $\sigma_{\phi}$ X decreased. For the cases of the annealing temperature more than $300^{\circ}C$, the contrast of the current image became large again. And the average barrier height $\phi_{ave}$ decreased and its standard deviation $\sigma_{\phi}$ increased. Also, the current histogram had a long tail in the high current region and became asymmetric. This result means the generation of the leakage current that is resulted from the local generation of a low barrier height region. In order to obtain the high tunnel magnetoresistance(TMR) ratio, the increase of the average barrier height and the decrease of the barrier height fluctuation must be strictly controlled.led.

  • In the present study, the flow fields in between the propeller and the semi-spade rudder are investigated by using PIV technique to find out the influences of both simulated hull wake and propeller wake on the incident flow to the rudder. The velocity fields are measured at the propeller rotation angle of $180^{\circ}$ and the rudder deflection angles of $0^{\circ}$. Flow fields measured at each rudder deflection angle are analyzed in terms of angle-of-attack against the rudder leading edge. The hull wake increases the angle-of-attack more than that in the uniform inflow condition, forming the angle-of-attack of about $20^{\circ}$ at 0.7R(R=propeller radius) position. The distribution of the angle-of-attack is strongly affected by the stagnation point around the leading edge and camber effect of the rudder. These effects provide asymmetric distribution of angle-of-attack with respect to the leading edge of the rudder.

  • Flat sheet membranes were prepared with polysulfone (PSF) by an immersion precipitation phase inversion method. Membranes were prepared with PSF/N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/phosphoric acid casting solution and water coagulant. By using the successive process of the vapor-induced phase inversion (VIPS) followed by the nonsolvent-induced phase inversion (NIPS), the effect of phosphoric acid addition to casting solution on morphology and permeability of membrane was studied. The mean pore size, the porosity, and the water flux of membranes were increased by the addition of small amount of phosphoric acid. Furthermore, the morphology of the prepared membranes were changed from a dense sponge-like structure to highly enhanced asymmetric structure. PSF/NMP/PVP/phosphoric acid/2-butoxyethanol (BE) casting solution were prepared and cast the successive VIPS-NIPS process with same experimental condition. Due to the addition of BE to casting solution, the mean pore size and almost 0.1 ${\mu}m$ and the water flux increased about 10 to 12 $L/cm^2{\cdot}min{\cdot}bar$.

  • This study is to analyse the timing of the structural change of price volatility and the asymmetry of price volatility during the period before and after the timing of the structural change of price volatility using Jeju Farming Olive Flounder's production area market price data from January 1, 2007 to June 30, 2013. The analysis methods of Quandt-Andrews break point test and Threshold GARCH model are employed. The empirical results of this study are summarized as follows: First, the result of Quandt-Andrews break point test shows that a single structural change in price volatility occurred on May 4, 2010 over the sample period. Second, during the period before structural change, daily price change rate has averagely positive value which means price increase, but during the period after structural change daily price change rate has averagely negative value which means price decrease. Also, daily volatility of price change rate during the period before structural change is higher than during the period after structural change. This indicates that price volatility decreases after structural change. Third, the estimation results of Threshold GARCH Model show that the volatility response against price increase is larger during the period after structural change than during the period before structural change. Also the result shows the volatility response against price decrease is larger during the period after structural change than during the period before structural change. And, irrespective of the timing of structural change, price increase has an larger effect on volatility than price decrease. This means volatility is asymmetric at price increase.

  • To study the effect of sequence on DNA structure, the two decamer crystal structures one alternating,d(GTACGCGTAC), and the other non-alternating, d(GGCCGCGGCC), were solved. Crystals of both decamers belong to the hexagonal space group $P6_122$, with one strand in the asymmetric unit. The unit cell constants of the alternating decamer are a = b = 39.26 $\AA$, c = 77.70 $\AA$. The structure was refined with 1,828 reflections from 8.0 to 2.0 Aresolution to an R value of 21.3% with all DNA atoms and 63 water molecules. The isomorphous non-alternating decamer had unit cell dimensions of a = b = 39.05 $\AA$, c = 82.15 $\AA$. The structure was refined with 2,423 reflections from 8.0 to 2.0 $\AA$ resolution to a final R value of 22.2% for all DNA atoms and 65 water molecules. Although the average helical parameters of the decamers are typical of A-DNAs, there are some minor differences between them. The helical twist, rise, x-displacement, inclination and roll alternate in the alternating decamer, but do not in the non-alternating decamer. The backbone conformations in both structures show some differences; the residue G(7) of the alternating decamer is trans for $\alpha$ and $\gamma$ while the trans conformations are observed at the residue G(8) of the non-alternating decamer.

  • The zodiacal light (ZL), combination of the sunlight scattered by and the infrared light emitted by the interplanetary dust (IPD) particles, changes with time due to the asymmetric distribution of the particles with respect to the Earth's orbit. Especially, the variation of the ZL brightness toward the ecliptic poles are useful to probe the properties of the global distribution of the IPD because we can evade the effect of the small scale structures, such as the asteroidal dust bands. The ecliptic poles are frequently visited by the infrared (IR) space telescopes owing to their sun-synchronous orbits or for specific purposes. We collect and analyze the observations toward the ecliptic poles by COBE/DIRBE, AKARI, and MIRIS, covering the wavelengths from about 1 to $25{\mu}m$. The observed seasonal variations of the ZL are modeled with a simple IPD cloud model to derive cloud parameters. The parameters are compared with those of the empirical cloud models by Kelsall et al. (1998) and Kondo et al. (2016), and the discrepancies are discussed.
