  • Libraries, not only research libraries but also public libraries, have been fundamentally affected by the immense spread of the Internet and the World Wide Web. Many public libraries have their Web pages, through which they are providing their new and conventional services. There are also web sites which provide library-like services. This paper shows an experimental project named Internet Public Library Asia, which provides information in multiple languages of information resources published in Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages. This paper firstly overviews how traditional public libraries have been affected by the Internet. Then, it describes a few aspects from the viewpoint of crucial library function on the Internet and also from the viewpoint of Asian resources and users. This paper secondly proposes a model to serve information about valuable resources published in multiple Asian languages, and then shows the metadata schema and a few software tools developed for IPL-Asia The name of IPL is borrowed from Internet Public Library based at University of Michigan, since it is, in part, a collaborative activity with the IPL in Michigan. The metadata schema is defined based both on Dublin Core and IEEE LOM and adapted for parallel description in the four languages, i. e. , Chinese, Japanese, Korean and English. The software tools provide functions to support collaboration among people engaged in development of metadata database and metadata editing. These tools have been developed based on the XML technologies.

  • This study analyzed library awareness and anxiety among people in their 20s living in East Asia. The objective is to develop the international library cooperation agenda for life-long education proliferation. User groups in Korea, China, and Japan were investigated to understand the differences in library awareness based on the situational contexts such as preferred resources, use frequency, educational level, and gender. Results of the data analysis showed the correlation between library anxiety and use patterns such as preferred information sources and frequency of use. Specifically, the user group in China has the highest level of library anxiety with every factor. Also, the Korean user group was measured to have the lowest level of library anxiety in terms of digital information factor. Based on these results, the study presents several recommendations for resolving library anxiety such as embracing new information need with regard to environmental change and suggesting a new space policy for libraries.

  • This study focused on the 'Special Korean Collection' at the University of Hawaii's Hamilton Library, to examine the actual construction of Korean academic materials. The collection includes rare books by Marshall Pihl and Korean academic materials collected by 'the Korea Center'. And the following points were reviewed. First, what is the actual status of Korean academic data? Second, what is the field of study and what is the value of the material? Furthermore, this research sought to shed light on the Korean studies of early Korean emigrants. This includes not only the Americas but also Northeast Asia, Russia and Central Asia. There is a lack of comprehensive review of these materials at present. As a result, despite they are important research material, it is assumed that researchers have failed to grasp the academic, literary, cultural and artistic data of contemporary Korean emigrants. So the study also provided an understanding and future direction of the Korean collection.
