Settlement Analysis for Improvement Effect of Soft Ground Method in Incheon Cheongna Site (인천 청라지역의 연약지반 개량공법에 따른 지반개량효과 및 침하분석)

  • In this study, characteristics of consolidation settlement of soft grounds adapting preloading method and vertical drain method were compared. A real measurement settlement is compared with predicted one by the future settlement prediction method like the Asaoka's method, the Hyperbolic method and the Hoshino method. A accuracy of predicted future settlement by the Asaoka's method is relatively higher than the Hyperbolic method or the Hoshino method generally. But in the area conducted with the vertical drain method, settlement prediction accuracy of three methods is similar unlike popular beliefs; Asaoka's is the better method for prediction than others. The study area is also confirmed by investigation of the drainage system after applying the change through the N values, soil physical and mechanical properties were investigated, and physical properties are improved.

  • Analyses which loads were regarded as instant load and gradual step load were performed with data measured on gradually loaded field, and the results were inspected to find effect of load condition, and final settlements predicted by Hyperbolic, Tan's, Asaoka's, and Monden's method were compared with each other. According to above analyses, the following conclusions were obtained. Settlement curves which loads were regarded as instant load and gradual step load were beginning to coincide at time of twice duration of embankment. On the ground installed vertical drain, the result of Hyperbolic, Tan's, Asaoka's, Monden's, curve fitting I, and curve fitting II (simple, Carrillo) methods make conclude that Asaoka, curve fitting I, and curve fitting II methods agree with measured settlement.

연약지반 장기침하량 예측기법의 적용성 연구

  • The theory of consolidation has been achieved remarkable development, but associated properties are very difficult to determine in the laboratory. The theoretical shortcomings of those consolidation theories and uncertainties of associated properties make inevitably some discrepancy between theoretical and field settlements. Field settlement measurement by settlement plate is, therefore, widely used to overcome the discrepancy. Among the various methods of ultimate settlement predictions using field settlement data, hyperbolic method and Asaoka's method are most commonly used because of their simplicity and ability to give a reasonable estimate of consolidation settlement. In this paper, the applicability of hyperbolic method and Asaoka's method has been estimated by the analysis of the laboratory consolidation test and field measured data. It is shown that both hyperbolic method and Asaoka's method are significantly affected by the direction of drainage, and Asaoka's method is better to reflect the properties of the soft foundation than hyperbolic method.

Evaluation Methods of Compression Index and the Coefficient of Consolidation by Back Analysis of Settlement Data (현장계측치로부터 역산한 압축지수와 압밀계수의 평가 방법)

  • A large scale field test of prefabricated vertical drains is performed to analyze the effect of parameters of the very soft clay at a test site. Compression index and the coefficient of horizontal consolidation obtained by back-analysis from the settlement data were compared with those obtained by means of laboratory tests. The Hyperbolic, Asaoka's and The Curve fitting methods are used to estimate final settlements and coefficients of consolidation. 1. Final settlement predicted with the Hyperbolic method was the largest, and the settlements predicted with the Asaoka's and the Curve fitting methods were nearly the same range, and it was concluded that smear effect has to be considered on design in the case that spacing of drains is small 2. The relationships of the measured consolidation ratio (Urn) and the designed consolidation ratio($U_t$) were showed as $U_m$ = (1.13~1.17)$U_t$, $U_m$ = (1.07~1.20)$U_t$, $U_m$ = (1.13~1.17)$U_t$ on the Hyperbolic, Asaoka's and the Curve fitting methods, respectively. The relations on the Asaoka's and the Curve fitting methods were nearly the same range. 3. The relationships of the field compression index($C_{cfield}$) and virgin compression index($V_{cclab}$) were showed as $C_{cfield}$ = (1.26~1.45)$V_{cclab}$, $C_{cfield}$ = (1.08~1.15) $V_{cclab}$, $C_{cfield}$ = (1.04~1.21)$V_{cclab}$, on the Hyperbolic, Asaoka's and the Curve fitting methods, respectively. 4. The ratio ($C_h/C_v$) of the coefficient of vertical consolidation and the coefficient of horizontal consolidation that is obtained by back-analysis from the settlement data was $C_h$=(0.7~0.9)$C_v$, $C_h$=(0.9~1.5)$C_v$, $C_h$=(2.4~3.0)$C_v$ on the Hyperbolic, Asaoka's and the Curve fitting methods, respectively. 5. It was concluded that the exact consolidation coefficient must be determined after the final settlement is predicted again when the consolidation is finished, because the field consolidation coefficient is decreased as the time allowed to be alone is increased.

  • In this study, the degrees of consolidation were evaluated by analyzing the long-term settlement measured at the 3 work sites with soft ground in Gyeongnam Area. The Hyperbolic, Hoshino and Asaoka method were used, which were focused on prediction of long-term settlement of land on the basis of field measurement data. And the applicability of the settlement prediction method according to the measurement periods was investigated by analyzing the degree of consolidation at the target areas after dividing the terms into early and latter parts. According to the results obtained at the early stage of consolidation, the Hyperbolic method appeared to be in the highest applicability level, which was followed by Asaoka and Hoshino method in the order of level. In the case of latter stage of consolidation, Asaoka method appeared to be in the highest applicability level, which was followed by and the Hyperbolic, Hoshino method in the order of level.

Development of a Observational Settlement Analysis Method Using Outliers (이상치를 이용한 관측적 침하예측기법의 개발)

  • Observational methods such as the Asaoka's method and the hyperbolic method are widely applied on the settlement analysis using observed settlement. The most unreliable aspects in those methods is arose from the subjective discretion of initial non-linearity on linear regression. The initial non-linearity is inevitable due to the settlement behaviour itself. Therefore an objective method is essential to achieve more reliable results on settlement analysis. It was found that the initial non-linear data are statistical outliers. New automation algorithms of the hyperbolic and the Asaoka's method were developed based on outlier detection method. The methods are a successive detection of outliers and a searching method of suitable hyperbolic range for the Asaoka's and the hyperbolic method respectively. Applicability of the algorithms was verified through case studies.

An Experimental Study on the Settlement Characteristics of Soft Ground in the Central West Coast Region (서해안 중부지역 연약지반의 침하특성 분석을 위한 실험적 연구)

  • Purpose: An experiment was conducted to analyze the characteristics of the settlement of soft clay soil in the central region of the west coast of Korea, which has a high silt content and is difficult to predict settlement due to various stress histories. Method: Field experiments were conducted for three cases. The settlement amount of the subsidence plate was measured in each case, and the following conclusions were drawn by analyzing Terzaghi's one-dimensional consolidation settlement amount, both the hyperbolic method and the Asaoka method. Result: The predicted value by Terzaghi was analyzed to be the largest in all cases, and it was predicted to be 111% to 187% larger than the subsidence plate settlement value. That is, the subsidence plate settlement value, which is the amount of settlement of the actual ground, showed a settlement of 53.4~89.9% compared to the predicted value of Terzaghi. Therefore, it was analyzed that the expected settlement of the Terzaghi method in the clay soft ground of the central west coast of Korea is more than the actual settlement. Conclusion: It was analyzed that the Asaoka method and the hyperbolic method presented relatively similar results, and in practice, predicting the settlement amount smaller than the actual settlement amount may cause a risk, so the hyperbola analysis method predicted 6~14% larger than the actual settlement amount can be used as a safety side.

  • This study analyzed an application possibility of neural network to overcome problems of conventional settlement prediction. It is very important to estimate settlement in preloading method used to improve soft ground. At present, Hyperbolic method, Hoshino method and Asaoka method are used mostly in the prediction of settlement. But these methods can not predict settlement at the phase of design. On the other hand, neural networks are capable of predicting settlement through accumulated data in the phase of design and this method can be easily applied in practice. In this study Elman neural network is used to estimate future settlement.

  • In this study, we intended to compare and examine several settlement management methods by analyzing measurement results of a site of the industrial complex at ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ province. We predicted and analyzed the amount of final settlement by using generally used final settlement methods as like Hyperbola method, Hoshino methods and Asaoka method. And then, We compared the predicted results with that of measurement. On the basis of comparison of the three methods, Hyperbola method was the most convenient and accurate method of the three methods and if a sufficient time was given enough after embankment construction, the use of Hoshino method was possible. In the case of the Asaoka methods, it was possible to know that it had an approaching tendency to the measured one with increasing time interval spent on analysis. Therefore, in order to predict settlement behavior more accurately it is needed to understand their advantages and shortcomings sufficiently and pay attention to application to the real site.
