  • This paper presents a modified on-off algorithm based on the gradient method for providing the phase of each antenna element more accurately and simply compared to the conventional on-off algorithm. The sup4erisority of theproposed method is due to the fact that the proposed method finds the increase and decrease of the array output power more accurately by utilizing the gradient of array output power with respect to the instantaneous phase of array element. The array antenna adopting to the proposed method formsmaximum beam-pattern along the direction of the desired signal by aligning the phase of every antenna enement. The proposed method is applied to both linear and two-dimentional aray for analyzing the result. The capability of the real-time processing of the proposed technique is confirmed by implementing the proposed algorithm with TMS320C30 Evaluation Module. Since the computational load required to form the beam-pattern per snapshot is small, the proposed method is suitable for the mobile communication system of which the response must be fast. By the results obtained from the application of the proposed method to the CDMA mobile communication environment, it is vreified that the performance of the received signal is consideralbly improved.

  • This paper deals with the performance analysis of 3-dimensional array antenna by DOA estimation and beamforming in GPS receiver for performance improvement by interference elimination. The array antenna in GPS receiver can improve the system performance by estimating DOA of arriving signal direction, making the main beam for desired direction and elimate the jammer signal by nulling while keeping the GPS signal direction by spatial filtering. In this paper, we propose five types of 3-dimensional array antenna and analyze the estimation error via MUSIC algorithm which is used for the estimation of DOA of arrived signal and beamforming performance. In analyzing DOA performance, we measure DOA estimation error, while in analyzing beamformig performance, we measure BER. In beamforming performance analyzing, we use various jammer power and the existence of GPS signal and angle spread. By performing through the computer simulation, Curved (B) 7-element antenna in proposed 3-dimensional array antenna exhibits the superior performance in the DOA estimation, estimation error, BER characteristic and angle spread compared to the rest four array antenna types.

  • This paper proposes a hybrid antenna with novel beam steering scheme. The antenna have a cassegrain structure composed of two reflectors. The main reflector is designed for high gain performance using parabola curvature, and the sub-reflector is plate and can be rotated by ${\pm}3^{\circ}$. Thus proposed antenna can steer a antenna beam using the inclination of sub-reflector. A feed array composed of 20 elements is adapted as a feeder for electrical beam steering, and the antenna can be possible to steer the beam by the feed array with sub-reflector. Proposed antenna was fabricated to be operated in Ka-band(30.085$\sim$30.885 GHz) for TX and K-band(20.355$\sim$21.155 GHz), which are the operation frequencies of the Korean satellite, Mugunhwa, to provide satellite multi-media service to vehicles. By the performance test, it can be known that the antenna has minimum gain of 47 dBi for TX and 44.4 dBi for TX and can steer the beam by ${\pm}2^{\circ}$ with sub-reflector.

  • The 4 by 4 microstrip phased array antenna designed and radiation characteristics are studied. The design frequency was chosen to be 5.8GHz. Chebyshev ratio was achieved by unequal power divider and Wilkinson power divider. The ratio of current at each port is 1 : 2.6 : 2.6 : 1 and then side lobe level is less than -30 dB. It is shown that the radiation beam direction can be changed up to 30。 by control the phase at each port. The result can be used to design electrically controllable microwave scanning antennas.

  • In this paper, two $4{\times}4$ rectangular patch array antennas operated at 20 GHz are implemented for the satellite communication. Two $2{\times}2$ sub-arrays are designed and used for the design of $4{\times}4$ patch array. The sixteen patch antennas and microstrip feeding line are printed on the single-layered substrate. The spacing between the array elements is chosen to be $0.736{\lambda}$. The HPBW(Half Power Beam Width) of the $4{\times}4$ microstrip patch array is 17.01 degrees in the E-plane and 17.71 degrees in the H-plane with a gain of 11.6dB in the experimental results. The HPBW of the recessed $4{\times}4$ microstrip patch array is 18.66 degrees in E-plane and 17.12 degrees in the H-plane with a gain of 12.55dB in the experimental results.

It was designed and fabricated in 16$\times$8 array by using low cost polyester based copper-clad laminate and foam instead of high cost dielectric substrate. It had gain of 22.9 dBi, beamwidth of 4.6$^{\circ}$, and tilted angle from broadside direction of 43.9$^{\circ}$.

  • In this paper, three types of array antennas for 5G mobile devices operating at 28 GHz were designed, and their performances were compared. The isolation between antenna elements was compared based on $S_{21}$. The $S_{21}$ of dipole, slot, and patch type are -13.76 dB, -16.88 dB, and -11.47 dB, respectively, with the slot-type antenna having the highest isolation. In order to compare the beam coverage performance, several characteristics such as beam width and maximum beam steering angle were analyzed. The analysis shows that the slot type has the widest steering angle of $63^{\circ}$ while the patch type has narrowest with $36^{\circ}$. In addition, to verify the performance of the antennas in the actual usage environment of the device, antenna characteristics in talk mode and data mode were analyzed through simulation. The results confirmed that the slot-type array antenna is the most suitable array antenna element for 28 GHz 5G mobile devices.

  • A method of calculation fur propagating and focusing of focused beams generated in antenna arrays, using BPM(Beam Propagation Method), is presented in this paper. Based on the diffraction theory, the beam focusing and Propagation is studied specially for the case of the antenna way fed by the Rotman lens that is able to focus microwave power on its focal arc or generate multiple beams. There are difficulties in performing a full-wave simulation using a commercial EM simulation tool for propagating and focusing of beams because of the structural complexity and the feeding assignment of the antenna array. Therefore, as an alternative solution, the BPM is presented to calculate the beam propagation from the aperture-type antennas. From the point of view of optics, the propagations of the lens have been simplified from the Fresnel diffraction integral to the Fourier transform. Using Fourier Transform, a beam propagation method is developed to show improvement of the resolution by controlling the wavefront of wave Propagating from an aperture-type antenna array. The beam width(or spot size) and the intensity are calculated for a focused beam propagating from an array having $10\lambda$ of its size. For the beams with $20\lambda,\;30\lambda$, and $50\lambda$ of geometrical focal length, the half-power beam widths(or spot size) are about 1.1\lambda,\;1.3\lambda,\;and\;1.9\lambda$ respectively.

  • In this paper, the array synthesis horn antenna was designed and measured a radiation power after connecting magnetron. The proposed antenna was designed on the basis of the $4{\times}4$ array synthesis horn antenna characteristics. For suppressing a back-lobe, 2 step short-stub structures were attached to synthesis horn aperture upper and lower. The designed antenna has FBR(Front to Back Ratio) of 39.7 dB. HPBW(Half Power Beam Width) of the E-plane and the H-plane are $8.86^{\circ}$ and $7.35^{\circ}$ each in the measurement. For measuring a radiation power of array antenna that use a magnetron, the waveguide adaptor was designed and connected magnetron with horn antenna. Also, microstrip line coupler that replace a dielectric material with an air gap was designed for measuring a high power. As a result, average radiation output power of the $4{\times}4$ array synthesis horn antenna that connect a four magnetrons had a 0.063W.
