  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the features of science language in Earth science textbooks and Earth science research articles. We examined two Earth science textbooks and two Earth science articles using the taxonomy of scientific words, the text structure analysis of explanations, the analysis of conjunctive relations and reasoning, and the function of conjunction. The results showed that school science language revealed in Earth science textbooks had high proportion of naming words and the text structures in which definition/exemplification structure and description structure were dominant. Also, internal relations that showed additional arrangement rather than logical inference, were predominant in Earth science textbooks. However, scientists' science language revealed in the Earth science articles had more proportion of process words and concept words than the Earth science textbooks and the schematic structure of explanation texts, such as orientation - implication sequence - conclusion. In addition, the text structures in each sentences of implication -sequence showed cause/effect or problem-solving after description structures. Also each sentences expressed causal or abductive reasoning through the internal relations using verbs or adverbial inflection. It is necessary that we bridge the gap between the two languages for students' authentic use of science language. For the bridging, we propose "interlanguage", which mediates between school science language and scientists' language.

  • Hong-sii Tokso-rok (홍씨독서록 or Hong's Annotated Bibliography of Korean and Chinise Book) is the only work on the history of Korean bibliographies that has the introductory notes to each class, that is description of the origin of subject fields, transition, and characteristics at the beginning of each class. This paper is aimed to examine the outline of the introductory description of class, to analyze the Four Category Classification System(사부분류법) devised by Hong Sok-chu, and to explain how the classes of Four Category Classification are set and ordered. This paper shows several characteristics in the idea of Hong's classification system. There characteristics were discovered by analyzing the content of each introduction of classes. The characteristics ale as follows First, classes are organize and arranged from the substantial problem to nonsubstantial ones. In other words, the greater the distance of the class from the substantial problem of Confucianism, the farther the order of the class will be found from the substantial problem. The order of classes is set by how the class is closed to the substantial problem in the same hierarchy. This principle is strictly applied to the Hong's classification system. Second, on the basis of democratic thought, he del·eloped the classification system. In other words, when he set up the priority of classes, he put emphasis on the democratism as a guideline. The organization of classes belong to the catagories of history (Sa-bu, 사부) and philosophy(Cha-bu, 자부) showed the application of this principle. Conclusively, this paper found that Hong did not randomly arrange the class older, but he set the class order with objective reasons and logic when he set the class order of arrangement.

  • The need for changes in archival studies curriculum has been steadily raised because of the wide variation of the curriculum in each graduate school. In this study, the foreign archival studies guidelines and certification standards were compared and analyzed to derive key categories and elements for developing the Korean guidelines for a graduate program in archival studies. The five key categories and elements of the guideline include introduction, mission and goal, knowledge categories, administrative factors, and conclusion. On the other hand, the 10 knowledge categories to be learned by archivists include ① The Nature of Records and Archives, ② Selection, Appraisal, and Acquisition, ③ Arrangement and Description, ④ Preservation, ⑤ Reference and Access, ⑥ Outreach, Instruction, and Advocacy, ⑦ Management and Administration, ⑧ Social and Cultural Systems, ⑨ Legal and Financial Systems, and ⑩ Information Technology. In the future, knowledge categories need to be actively reflected by the opinions of the academic community and archivists to improve the graduate curriculum.

  • This study investigated the status of information services in records and archives centers using the Web to survey and by interviewing archivists and professionals. Services offered are not various, but some actives services including offering records via SNS and provising exibitions using records are offered. Many of the requested records are for evidence and reference for works, and the finding aids are limited in their functions. Also, the barriers in offering services were mostly due to the fact that the duties of managing records are mostly performed by one profession, and they have not enough time to provide services with the lack of manpower. Also the arrangement and description level is not enough and the records systems have limitations including lack of search functions. For better services, improvement of the systems and the supplement of manpower is considered to be most urgent.

  • Objectives : This study is to propose the identification keys based on stereoscopic examination of 8 seed herbs in 2 categories (Phyllolobobii Semen (PS) with 4 Astragali Semen (AS), and 2 Lepidii seu Descurainiae Semen (LDS) with 1 Drabae Semen (DS)) which have difficulties in discrimination with visual observation. Methods : We reviewed the description of original plants and their medicinal parts from the literature. The original plants were collected, identified, confirmed as specimens, and compared to the samples distributed in the market. The first identification was made by visual observation, and insufficient points were supplemented by stereoscopic observation. Identification criteria were set by considering morphological characteristics of authentic herbs, percentage of adulterants, and distinction between authentic herbs and adulterants. Results : The original plants of PS and AS could be distinguished by upright or lying form of stem, color of flowers, number of leaflets, and presence of hair of fruits. LDS and DS could be distinguished by leaf arrangement on stem: radical or cauline, whole plants size, leaf division, color of flowers, and shape of fruits. The herbal medicines of PS and AS could be distinguished by seed surface pattern, size, and hardness. LDS and DS could be distinguished by size, shape, viscosity when chewed, and degree of mucous layer formation when soaked in water. Conclusions : This study suggests the identification keys of original plants and herbal medicines. Especially, since fine seed herbs are difficult to distinguish by visual observation, the stereoscope should be applied to the discrimination.

  • This paper reports the project of arranging archives of Administrative Headquarters of the Jogye Order. It illustrates the whole process of preliminary survey, arrangement, appraisal and description of the archives. One of the distinctive features of the project lies in its focus on practical considerations. In other words, it has avoided blindly following theoretical recommendations made by previous efforts. First step of the project has been to review the current state of the archives through preliminary survey as well as analysis of related regulations. Second step has followed to establish actual process of classifying, appraising, describing, filing and designing storage facility management as well as a computerized archival management system. In this process, every concern has been given to prevent records and archives from physical damage and to ensure their intellectual order kept so that archival information could be re-constructed and usability and efficiency of the records could be secured. Major contributions made by the project can be found in that it has reviewed the volume of administrative archives created and held by Jogye Order and improved the overall efficiency of as well as information sharing among personnel at the Headquarter. The most notable accomplishment could be, however, found in that the project has helped the personnel to rediscover their own history from their records, rather than from their memory. From the theoretical perspective of archival science, the meaning of the project can also be found in that it has provided with the starting point toward establishing organizing methodology for organizational archives including religious archives. Arranging archives of an organization requires archivists to respect theories and principles, but at the same time, adequate attention should be paid to reflect idiosyncratic characteristics of the organization. General methods applicable to a wider range of archives could be derived from the very endeavor. Though impossible in a short period of time, it could be accomplished by accumulating theoretical and practical knowledge and experience.

  • Habit is the description of the outer appearance of a crystal. If the environment of a growing crystal affects its external shape without changing its internal structure, a different habit results. Crystal habit and the internal structure of a drug can affect bulk and physicochemical properties, which range from flowability to chemical stability. A polymorph is a solid crystalline phase of a given compound resulting from the possibility of at least two different arrangements of the molecules of that compound in the solid state. Chemical stability and solubility changes due to polymorphism can have an impact on a drug's bioavailability and its development program. During crystallization from a solution, crystals separating may consist of a pure component or be a molecular compound. Solvates are molecular complexes that have incorporated the crystallizing solvent molecule in their lattice. When the solvent incorporated in the solvate is water, it is called a hydrate. To distinguish solvates from polymorphs, which are not molecular compounds, the term pseudopolymorph is used. Identification of possible hydrate compounds is important since their aqueous solubilities can be significantly less than their anhydrous forms. Conversion of an anhydrous compound to a hydrate within the dosage form may reduce the dissolution rate and extent of drug absorption. An amorphous solid may be treated as a supercooled liquid in which the arrangement of molecules is random. Amorphous solids lack the three-dimensional long-range order found in crystalline solids. Since amorphous forms are usually of higher thermodynamic energy than corresponding crystalline forms, solubilities as well as dissolution rates are generally greater. A study on crystal form includes characterization of (l)crystal habit, (2)polymorphism, (3)pseudopolymorphism, (4)amorphous solid.

  • The Donghak Peasant Revolution in 1894 was a nationwide movement from the bottom of the uprising, which opened Korean modernization. Before and after the said revolution, the map of East Asian powers changed. It was an event with very significant meaning. When the revolution occurred in 1894, the peasant revolutionaries could not escape from the yoke of the traitors who rebelled. However, as time passed, recognition of the event also changed. Since the centennial anniversary of the Donghak Peasant Revolution in 1994, concerns and interests regarding the event have increased. Studies on this revolution have also been invigorated, thus shedding new light on the incident. By focusing on the historical sources on the Donghak Peasant Revolution in this article, the current status and archive of the event is studied, its value reviewed, and its collection, classification, arrangement, and description discussed from the perspective of archival studies.

  • In this study, we present the nearly complete mitogenome sequences of the garden chafer, Polyphylla laticollis manchurica, which is listed as an endangered species in Korea. The P. l. manchurica mitogenome, which includes unfinished whole A+T-rich region and a partial srRNA was 14,473-bp long, possessing typical sets of genes (13 PCGs, 22 tRNA genes, and 2 rRNA genes). Gene arrangement of the P. l. manchurica mitogenome was identical to the common one found in the majority of insects. The 5 bp-long motif sequence (TAGTA) that has been suggested to be the possible binding site for the transcription termination peptide for the major-strand was also found in the P. l. manchurica mitogenome between $tRNA^{Ser}$(UCN) and ND1. The start codon for COI gene and ATPase8 was designated as a typical TTG. All tRNAs of the P. l. manchurica showed a stable canonical clover-leaf structure of other mt tRNAs, except for $tRNA^{Ser}$(AGN), DHU arm of which could not form stable stemloop structure. As has been previously determined, the high A/T content was unanimously observed in P. l. manchurica in terms of A/T bias in the third codon position (73.5%) compared with the first (66.4%) and second codon position (66.2%). The PCGs encoded in major-strands are slightly T-skewed, whereas those of the minor-strand are A-skewed, indicating strand asymmetry in nucleotide composition in the Coleoptera including P. l. manchurica.
