  • This study was carried out to evaluate the microstructures and mechanical properties of a friction stir welded Ni based alloy. Inconel 600 (single phase type) alloy was selected as an experimental material. For this material, friction stir welding (FSW) was performed at a constant tool rotation speed of 400 rpm and a welding speed of 150~200 mm/min by a FSW machine, and argon shielding gas was utilized to prevent surface oxidation of the weld material. At all conditions, sound friction stir welds without any weld defects were obtained. The electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) method was used to analyze the grain boundary character distributions (GBCDs) of the welds. As a result, dynamic recrystallization was observed at all conditions. In addition, grain refinement was achieved in the stir zone, gradually accelerating from 19 ${\mu}m$ in average grain size of the base material to 5.5 ${\mu}m$ (150 mm/min) and 4.1 ${\mu}m$ (200 mm/min) in the stir zone with increasing welding speed. Grain refinement also led to enhancement of the mechanical properties: the 200 mm/min friction stir welded zone showed 25% higher microhardness and 15% higher tensile strength relative to the base material.

  • Decay kinetics of Ga(5s), Ga(5p) and Ga(4d) atoms in Ar were studied by laser induced fluorescence technique. Theground state gallium atoms in the gas phase were generated by pulsed dc discharge of trimethyl gallium and argon mixtures. Both pulsed discharge and YAG-DYE laser system were controlled by a dual channel pulse generator and the delay time between the end of discharge and laser pulses was set 3.0-6.0 ms. The Ga(5s) and Ga(4d) atoms were generated by single photon excitation from the ground state Ga atoms and radiative lifetimes as well as the total quenching rate constants in Ar were obtained from the pressure dependence of the fluorescence decay rates. The Ga(5p) atoms were populated by a two-photon excitation method and the cascade fluorescence from Ga(5s) atoms were analyzed to extract quenching rate constant of Ga(5p) atoms by Ar in addition to radiative lifetimes of Ga(5p) state. The magnitudes of the quenching rate constants by Ar for the low-lying excited states of Ga atoms are 1.6-3$ {\times}10^{-11}cm^3$ molecul$e^{-1}s^{-1}$, which are much larger than those for alkali, alkaline earth and Group 12 metals. Based on the measured rate constants, kinetic simulations were done to assign state-to-state rate constants.

  • The effect of different Ni-containing additives on the sintering behavior and electric conductivity of the proton conducting electrolyte $BaCe_{0.35}Zr_{0.5}Y_{0.15}O_{3-{\delta}}$ (BCZY5) was investigated. Ni-doped, NiO-added, and $BaY_2NiO_5$(BYN)-added (all 4 mol%) BCZY5 samples were prepared by the solid state synthesis method and sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 6 h. Among the three samples, the onset of densification was observed at the lowest temperature for NiO-added BCZY5, which is attributed to the formation of an intermediate phase at a low melting temperature. The BYN-added sample, where no consumption of the constitutional elements of the electrolyte was expected during sintering, exhibited the highest electrical conductivity whereas the doped sample had the lowest conductivity. The electrical conductivities at $500^{\circ}C$ under humid argon atmosphere were measured to be 2.0, 4.8, and $6.2mS{\cdot}cm^{-1}$ for Ni-doped and NiO- and BYN-added samples, respectively.

  • The present study aims to investigate the fluorination of thorium oxide ($ThO_2$) by ammonium hydrogen difluoride ($NH_4HF_2$). Fluorination was performed at room temperature by mixing $ThO_2$ and $NH_4HF_2$ at different molar ratios, which was then left to react for 20 days. Next, the mixtures were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) at the intervals of 5, 10, 15, and 20 days, followed by the heating of the mixtures at $450-750^{\circ}C$ with argon gas flow. The characterization of $ThF_4$ was established using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy-dispersion X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). In this study, ammonium thorium fluoride was synthesized through the fluorination of $ThO_2$ at room temperature. The optimum molar ratio in synthesizing ammonium thorium fluoride was 1.0:5.5 ($ThO_2:NH_4HF_2$) with 5 days reaction time. In addition, the heating of ammonium thorium fluoride at $450^{\circ}C$ was sufficient to produce $ThF_4$. Overall, this study proved that $NH_4HF_2$ is one of the fluorination agents that is capable of synthesizing $ThF_4$.

  • In this study, a ZnS film of 8-mm thickness was prepared on graphite using a hot-wall-type CVD technique. The ZnS thick film was then hot isostatically pressed under different pressures (125-205 MPa) in an argon atmosphere. The effects of pressure were systematically studied in terms of crystallographic orientation, grain size, density, and transmittance during the HIP process. X-ray diffraction pattern analysis revealed that the preferred (111) orientation was well developed after a pressure of 80 MPa was applied during the HIP process. A high transmittance of 61.8% in HIP-ZnS was obtained under the optimal conditions (1010℃, 205 MPa, 6 h) as compared with a range of approximately 10% for the CVD-ZnS thick film under a 550-nm wavelength. In addition, the main cause of the improvement in transmittance was determined to be the disappearance of the scattering factor due to grain growth and the increase in density.

  • This research examines the effect of adding aluminum on the structural, phasic, and magnetic properties of CoCrFe NiMnAlx high-entropy alloys. To this aim, the arc-melt process was used under an argon atmosphere for preparing cast samples. The phasic, structural, and magnetic properties of the samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and vibrational magnetometry (VSM) analyses. Based on the results, the addition of aluminum to the compound caused changes in the crystalline structure, from FCC solid solution in the CoCrFeNiMn sample to CoCrFeNiMnAl BBC solid solution. It was associated with changes in the magnetic property of CoCrFeNiMnAlx high-entropy alloys, from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic. The maximum saturation magnetization for the CoCrFeNiMnAl casting sample was estimated to be around 79 emu/g. Despite the phase stability of the FCC solid solution with temperature, the solid solution phase formed in the CrCrFeNiMnAl high-entropy compound was not stable, and changed into FCC solid solution with temperature elevation, causing a reduction in saturation magnetization to about 7 emu/g.

  • The effects of $MgB_4$ addition on the superconducting properties and the microstructure of in situ processed $MgB_2$ bulk superconductors were studied. $MgB_4$ powder of 1-20 wt.% was mixed with (Mg + 2B) powder and then pressed into pellets. The pellets of (Mg + 2B + $xMgB_4$) were heat-treated at $650^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in flowing argon. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis for the heat-treated samples showed that the major formed phase in all samples was $MgB_2$ and the minor phases were $MgB_4$ and MgO. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) values showed that the grain size of $MgB_2$ decreased as the amount of $MgB_4$ addition increased. $MgB_4$ particles included in a $MgB_2$ matrix is considered to suppress the grain growth of $MgB_2$. The onset temperatures ($T_{c,onset}$) of $MgB_2$ with $MgB_4$ addition (0-10 wt.%) was between 37-38 K. The 20 wt.% $MgB_4$ addition slightly reduced the $T_{c,onset}$ of $MgB_2$ to 36.5 K. This result indicates that $MgB_4$ addition did not influence the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of $MgB_2$ significantly. On the other hand, the small additions of 1-5 wt.% $MgB_4$ increased the critical current density ($J_c$) of $MgB_2$. The $J_c$ enhancement by $MgB_4$ addition is attributed not only to the grain size refinement but also to the possible flux pinning of $MgB_4$ particles dispersed in a $MgB_2$ matrix.

  • FAB CAD MS/MS(Fast Atom Bombardment Collision Activated Dissociation Mass Spectrometry/Mass Spectrometry) was used to study different degree of bond stability according to the linkage positions of alkali cationized $(Na^+, Li^+, K^+, NH_4^+)$ stereoisomeric and synthetic oligosaccharides. The alkali metal cations were much more stable, requiring over -40 eV of collision energy vs. only -10 eV for the protonated forms. Of the cations, the potassium cationized trisaccharides were more stable than the others. They would not yield fragment ions under the conditions of collision available in triple quadrupole. Other cationized species exhibited decreasing stability in the series $Nap^+>Li^+>NH_4^+$ using 0.8 mTorr argon pressure in the collision cell. Metal cations of the oligosaccharides maintained charge principally on the amino sugar as shown by shift of all the fragment ions containing the amino sugar. The reason for the higher stability of the metal cationized form is the formation of crown ether-like bond around metal cations, N-acetyl group on GlcNAc and oxygens on fucose moiety. Depending on the metal sizes and the conformation of linkage-isomeric region, cationized species gave linkage dependent fragment patterns and exhibited stability in the series 1-6 > 1-4 > 1-3 linkage.

  • This paper examined the conversion of methane to hydrogen and other higher hydrocarbons using dielectric barrier discharge with AC pulse power. Two metal electrodes of a coaxial-type plasma reactor were separated by gas gap and an alumina tube. The inner electrode was located inside the alumina tube. The alumina tube was located inside the stainless steel tube, which was used as the outer electrode. Effect of feed gas composition (methane, oxygen, argon, water and helium), flow rate, applied frequency, input volt-age on methane conversion and product distribution were studied. The major products of plasma chemical reactions were ethylene, ethane, propane, buthane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The increment of applied voltage and the usage of inert gas as the background (helium and argon) enhanced the selectivity of hydrocarbons and methane conversion. The addition of water in the feed stream enhanced the conversion of methane and yield of hydrogen. Higher voltage leads to higher yield of $C_2H_6,\;C_3H_8,\;C_4H_{10}$ and yield or $C_2H_2\;and\;C_2H_4$ appeared highly in lower voltage.

  • Objectives : During the past three decades there has been a significant evolution of laser acupuncture application in the nature of the clinical approach and the research of traditional medicine and laser therapy field. However, there have been no standard and guideline of laser equipment can be applied as laser acupuncture. This study aims to investigate the condition of laser equipment required as a laser acupuncture method. Methods : First, we performed literature search using the Medline(from 1999 to Oct 2008) to confirm types and ranges of laser equipments that can be applied as laser acupuncture. In addition, we investigated the characters of acupoints such as sites and depths, and compared with penetrating depths of each laser. Results : A total of 37 articles for clinical studies using laser acupuncture were selected, and 41 lasers were used. GaAs laser was used three times, GaAlAs laser 14, InGaAlP 18, HeNe laser 4, and Argon laser and CO2 laser were used one time, respectively. From all 361 points of fourteen meridians, depths of 341 points(94.5%) were 1 cun(2.3-3.2cm) or less. The mean depth of all points was 0.48 cun(1.1-1.5cm). Hence, it appeared that the majority of therapeutic lasers satisfied with the condition. HeNe, InGaAlP, GaAlAs, GaAs lasers are recommended for laser acupuncture, however, it may plausible that other surgical lasers could be used as the laser acupuncture, because it have the biostimulation effect to some extent, too. Conclusions : It is suggested that to select appropriate laser type and give the adequate output power to reach the acupoints under the skin using laser acupuncture. Further evaluation and research for the condition of laser acupuncture are warranted.
