  • As the use of image input and output devices increases, the importance of extracting text area in color images is also increasing. In this paper, in order to extract text area of the images efficiently, we present a text area extraction method for color images based on labeling and gradient difference method. The proposed method first eliminates non-text area using the processes of labeling and filtering. After generating the candidates of text area by using the property that is high gradient difference in text area, text area is extracted using the post-processing of noise removal and text area merging. The benefits of the proposed method are its simplicity and high accuracy that is better than the conventional methods. Experimental results show that precision, recall and inverse ratio of non-text extraction (IRNTE) of the proposed method are 99.59%, 98.65% and 82.30%, respectively.

  • A potential field method for solving the problem of path planning based on global and local information for a mobile robot moving among a set of stationary obstacles is described. The concept of various method used path planning is used design a planning strategy. A real human living area is constructed by many moving and imminence obstacles. Home service mobile robot must avoid many obstacles instantly. A path that safe and attraction towards the goal is chosen. The potential function depends on distance from the goal and heuristic function relies on surrounding environments. Three additional combined methods are proposed to apply to human living area, calibration robots position by measured surrounding environment and adapted home service robots. In this work, we proposed the application of various path planning theory to real area, human living. First, we consider potential field method. Potential field method is attractive method, but that method has great problem called local minimum. So we proposed intermediate point in real area. Intermediate point was set in doorframe and between walls there is connect other room or other area. Intermediate point is very efficiency in computing path. That point is able to smaller area, area divided by intermediate point line. The important idea is intermediate point is permanent point until destruction house or apartment house. Second step is move robot with sensing on front of mobile robot. With sensing, mobile robot recognize obstacle and judge moving obstacle. If mobile robot is reach the intermediate point, robot sensing the surround of point. Mobile robot has data about intermediate point, so mobile robot is able to calibration robots position and direction. Third, we gave uncertainty to robot and obstacles. Because, mobile robot was motion and sensing ability is not enough to control. Robot and obstacle have uncertainty. So, mobile robot planed safe path planning to collision free. Finally, escape local minimum, that has possibility occur robot do not work. Local minimum problem solved by virtual obstacle method. Next is some supposition in real living area.

  • Drivable area detection is a major task in advanced driver assistance systems. For drivable area detection, several studies have proposed vision-sensor-based approaches. However, conventional drivable area detection methods that use vision sensors are not suitable for environments with changes in road elevation. In addition, if the boundary between the road and vegetation is not clear, judging a vegetation area as a drivable area becomes a problem. Therefore, this study proposes an accurate method of detecting drivable areas in environments in which road elevations change and vegetation exists. Experimental results show that when compared to the conventional method, the proposed method improves the average accuracy and recall of drivable area detection on the KITTI vision benchmark suite by 3.42%p and 8.37%p, respectively. In addition, when the proposed vegetation area removal method is applied, the average accuracy and recall are further improved by 6.43%p and 9.68%p, respectively.

  • Aiming at infrared thermal images with different buried depth defects, we study a variety of image segmentation algorithms based on the threshold to develop global search ability and the ability to find the defect area accurately. Firstly, the iterative thresholding method, the maximum entropy method, the minimum error method, the Ostu method and the minimum skewness method are applied to image segmentation of the same infrared thermal image. The study shows that the maximum entropy method and the minimum error method have strong global search capability and can simultaneously extract defects at different depths. However none of these five methods can accurately calculate the defect area at different depths. In order to solve this problem, we put forward a strategy of "divide and conquer". The infrared thermal image is divided into several local thermal maps, with each map containing only one defect, and the defect area is calculated after local image processing of the different buried defects one by one. The results show that, under the "divide and conquer" strategy, the iterative threshold method and the Ostu method have the advantage of high precision and can accurately extract the area of different defects at different depths, with an error of less than 5%.

  • This study introduces a method to evaluate the probability of a specific area to be affected by a drought of a given severity and shows its potential for investigating agricultural drought characteristics. The method is applied to Gyeonggi as a case study. The proposed procedure includes Standard Precipitation Index(SPI) time series, which are linearly transformed by the Empirical Orthogonal Functions(EOF) method, These EOFs are extended temporally with AutoRegressive Moving Average(ARMA) method and spatially with Kriging method. By performing these simulations, long time series of SPI can be simulated for each designed grid cell in whole Gyeonggi area. The probability distribution functions of the area covered by a drought and the drought severity are then derived and combined to produce drought severity-area-frequency(SAF) curves.

  • Leakage magnetic flux is occurred in the cracked area of magnetized specimens, and also it changes the magnetic domain area of the magneto-optical film positioned on the specimen. It causes the change of the optical permeability of the magnetic domain on the crack area. So crack images can be obtained easily using this principle. On the other hand, utilizing a laser in this method makes possible to perform a remote sensing by detecting the light intensity contrast between cracked area and normal area. This paper shows the application of non-destructive inspection system taking advantage of magneto-optical method for micro-cracks and presents examples applied to the several types of specimens having fatigue cracks and fabricated cracks using this method. Also the authors prove the possibility of this method as a remote sensing system under the oscillation load considering application to real fields.

  • The objective of this study was to suggest contingent valuation method, simple random sampling method, systematic sampling method, maximum practice area method, and overlay practice area method as the estimation methods for forest management area to estimate carbon dioxide sink by forest management as stated in Article 3.4 of the Kyoto Protocol. A case study for Chungcheongbuk-do was performed using maximum practice area method which was thought of as the most rational method within MRV(Measurable, reportable and verifiable). The forest management ratio was defined as forest management area over the total forest area. Based on the definition of forest management activity, forest area was divided into practice forest land and non-practice forest land. The area of forest mangement for practices was based on the 'National Forest Management Information System' and the history of practices from the 'Proposals on Private Management Information Database'. The area of forest management for non-practices was based on the public used forest land from 'Categorial map of forest land'. It was shown that the forest management area of Chuncheongbuk-do was 115,566 ha for practice forest land, and 131,008 ha for non-practice forest land. The forest managent ratio was 49.7% of the total forest area of 495,806 ha. This study made possible to the estimation of the forest management ratio under Kyoto Protocol, and had an advantage in searching for a practical method of forest management plan in which the forest management ratio could be enhanced.

  • This paper presents a new approach to solve the multi area unit commitment problem (MAUCP) using an evolutionary programming based particle swarm optimization (EPPSO) method. The objective of this paper is to determine the optimal or near optimal commitment schedule for generating units located in multiple areas that are interconnected via tie lines. The evolutionary programming based particle swarm optimization method is used to solve multi area unit commitment problem, allocated generation for each area and find the operating cost of generation for each hour. Joint operation of generation resources can result in significant operational cost savings. Power transfer between the areas through the tie lines depends upon the operating cost of generation at each hour and tie line transfer limits. Case study of four areas with different load pattern each containing 7 units (NTPS) and 26 units connected via tie lines have been taken for analysis. Numerical results showed comparing the operating cost using evolutionary programming-based particle swarm optimization method with conventional dynamic programming (DP), evolutionary programming (EP), and particle swarm optimization (PSO) method. Experimental results show that the application of this evolutionary programming based particle swarm optimization method has the potential to solve multi area unit commitment problem with lesser computation time.

  • 1. The purpose of this experiment was to compose the precision of dot grid method and transects method with that of pianimeter method in area measurement. 2. The following conclusions were obtained through study on precision of area measurement of 20 plots. 3. The percentage error of each method was none significant in comparision with planimeter method. 4. The dot grid method gave 0.2% of overestimated value and the transects method 0.67% of underestimated value. 5. Accordingly, the dot grid method gave the better result than the transects method. 6. The transects method had small errors at the plots larger than 30ha. while it had big errors at plots smaller than 30ha. Therefore, it can be said that the transects method is suitable for area measurement of plots larger than 30 hectares.
