Biotransformation of Theophylline in Cirrhotic Rats Induced by Biliary Obstruction

  • The object of this work was to study the pharmacokinetic differences and the cause of these differences in cirrhotic rats induced by biliary obstruction when aminophylline (8 mg/kg as theophylline, i.v.) was administered. The concentrations of theophylline and its major metabolite (1,3-dimethyluric acid) in plasma were determined by HPLC. In addition, formation of 1,3-dimethyluric acid from theophylline in microsomes and the changes in the activity of drug metabolizing enzymes, which are suggested to be involved in theophylline metabolism, were determined. In cirrhotic rats, the systemic clearance of theophylline was reduced to 30% of the control value while AUC (area under the palsma concentration-tie curve) and (t1/2)$\beta$ were increased 1.3 fold and3.5 fold, respectively. The formation of 1,3-dimethyluric acid was decreased to 30% of the control value in microsomes of cirrhotic rat liver. In cirrhotic rat liver, activities of aniline hydroxylase (CYP2E1 related), erythromycin-N-demethylase (CYP3A related), and methoxyresorufin-O-demethylase (CYP1A2 related), which were reported to be related with theophyline metabolism, were decreased to 67%, 53%, and 76% that of normal rat liver, respectively. From the results, it can be concluded that in cirrhotic rats induced by biliary obstruction, the total body clearance of theophylline is markedly reduced and it may be due to decreased activity of drug metabolizing enzymes in liver.

  • In this study, samples of wheat flour and dough were prepared by adding of 1, 3, or 5% branched dextrin, which is produced from the amylopectin of waxy corn starch using a cyclization reaction with a branching enzyme. The samples were then evaluated qualitatively in terms of farinogram, viscogram, and extensogram characteristics. The fermentation power of dough expansion, extensogram characteristics, specific volume, baking loss, external/internal surface appearance, and sensory qualities were also examined after 4 weeks of storage at -20$^{\circ}C$ to determine the effect on freeze-thaw stability and quality improvement of branched dextrins in the soft roll bread formulation. Furthermore, the samples along with a control were compared regarding their quality characteristics, including changes in moisture content, water activity, color, and textural characteristics during a storage period of 4 days at 20$^{\circ}C$ to determine the effect on preventing retrogradation of the branched dextrin. As the branched dextrin content increased, area and extensibility increased, whereas water absorption, fermentation power of dough expansion, resistance/extensibility ratio, baking loss, and brownness of the crust decreased. However, the control group presented significantly higher peak viscosity, resistance, specific volume, taste, overall acceptability, moisture content, water activity, springiness, cohesiveness, and resilience values than those of the branched dextrin samples, whereas lightness, hardness, and chewiness showed the reverse effect. As the storage period increased, lightness, hardness, and chewiness increased, whereas cohesiveness decreased. In conclusion, the results indicate that adding 1~3% branched dextrin into a soft roll bread formulation from frozen dough had no positive effect on freeze-thaw stability or preventing retrogradation but may provide good nutritional properties.

백서에서 경피적 고주파 자극에 따른 온도 변화 및 조직 변화 (Effect of Transcutaneous High Frequency Wave on the Change of Tissue Temperature and Histology in Sprague-Dawley Rat)

  • Objective: High frequency wave has been used in cancer treatment and cosmetic area but not in musculoskeletal pain yet. The purpose of this study is to evaluate temperature distribution according to depth and confirm safety of high frequency wave through animal study. Method: High frequency wave was applied to the posterior limb of 9 Sprague-Dawley rats for 20 minutes (experimental group) and no wave was used in the same number of rats for control group. Tissue temperature was measured from skin surface to 1 cm depth (surface, 1 mm, 5 mm, and 1 cm) for 5 seconds. Results: In the experimental group, temperature was elevated 3.2℃ at skin surface, 2.87℃ at 1 mm, 2.25℃ in 5 mm, and 1.74℃ in 1 cm depth. These were significantly different from those in the control group (p<0.001). There was no bulla or redness in the skin after high frequency wave stimulation and neither change of myocytes nor collagen degeneration was found in the tissue histology. There was no apoptosis in the skin surface and muscle layer in TUNEL assay. Conclusion: High frequency wave elevated tissue temperature from the skin to muscle layer without both histologic change and apoptosis.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Gastric Cancer Screening in South Korea: Results From the Korean National Cancer Screening Survey (2017-2021)

  • Purpose: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly disrupted cancer screening services worldwide. We aimed to measure the impact of COVID-19 on gastric cancer screening rates based on age, sex, household income, and residential area. Materials and Methods: We analyzed data from the Korean National Cancer Screening Survey from 2017 to 2021 for adults aged 40-74 years. We evaluated the gastric cancer screening rate within two years in accordance with the National Cancer Screening Program protocol recommendations and that within the previous year. We compared the trends in the pre- and post-COVID-19 outbreak periods. Results: Before the COVID-19 outbreak, there was little change in the gastric cancer screening rates until 2019. After the COVID-19 outbreak, the screening rate as per recommendation decreased from 70.8% in 2019 to 68.9% in 2020 and that for one year decreased from 32.7% in 2019 to 27.2% in 2020. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic continued after 2020, both gastric cancer screening rates as per recommendations and for one year rebounded. Although a similar trend was observed for the upper endoscopy screening rate, the upper gastrointestinal series screening rate decreased from 7.8% in 2020 to 3.1% in 2021. During the pandemic, the screening rate decreased among younger adults (40-49), those residing in metropolitan regions, and those with high incomes. Conclusions: Despite a decline in gastric cancer screening rate during the COVID-19 pandemic, the rate surged in 2021. Further studies are needed to estimate the impact of cancer screening delays on future cancer-related mortalities.

A Lane Based Obstacle Avoidance Method for Mobile Robot Navigation

  • This paper presents a new local obstacle avoidance method for indoor mobile robots. The method uses a new directional approach called the Lane Method. The Lane Method is combined with a velocity space method i.e., the Curvature-Velocity Method to form the Lane-Curvature Method (LCM). The Lane Method divides the work area into lanes, and then chooses the best lane to follow to optimize travel along a desired goal heading. A local heading is then calculated for entering and following the best lane, and CVM uses this local heading to determine the optimal translational and rotational velocities, considering some physical limitations and environmental constraint. By combining both the directional and velocity space methods, LCM yields safe collision-free motion as well as smooth motion taking the physical limitations of the robot motion into account.

  • It is an interesting area in the field of artifical intelligence to find an analytic model of cooperative structure for multiagent system accomplishing a given task. Usually it is difficult to design controllers for multi-agent systems without a comprehensive knowledge about the system. One of the way to overcome this limitation is to implement an evolutionary approach to design the controllers. This paper introduces the use of a genetic algorithm to discover a fuzzy logic controller with rules that govern emergent agents solving a pursuit problem in a continuous world. Simulation results indicate that, given the complexity of the problem, an evolutionary approach to find the fuzzy logic controller seems to be promising.

Morphology control of inkjet-printed small-molecule organic thin-film transistors with bank structures

  • Reported herein is the film morphology control of inkjet-printed 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-pentacene) organic thin-film transistors for the improvement of their performance and of the device-to-device uniformity. The morphology of the inkjetted TIPS-pentacene films was significantly influenced by the bank geometry such as the bank shapes and confinement area for the channel region. A specific confinement size led to the formation of uniform TIPS-pentacene channel layers and better electrical properties, which suggests that the ink volume and the solid concentration of the organic-semiconductor solutions should be considered in designing the bank geometry.

  • Even though the impact of manufacturing quality to reliability is not considered much as well as that of design area, a major cause of an early failure of the product is known as manufacturing problem. This research applies two different types of neural network algorithms, the Back propagation (BP) algorithm and Learning Vector Quantization (LVQ) algorithm, to identify and classify the nonrandom variation pattern on the control chart based on knowledge-based diagnosis of dimensional variation. The performance and efficiency of both algorithms are evaluated to choose the better pattern recognition system for auto body assembly process. To analyze hundred percent of the data obtained by Optical Coordinate Measurement Machine (OCMM), this research considers an application in which individual observations rather than subsample means are used. A case study for analysis of OCMM data in underbody assembly process is presented to demonstrate the proposed knowledge-based pattern recognition system.

모멘트 균형점의 효율적 탐색을 갖는 비제산기 COA 비퍼지화기 (A dividerless COA defuzzifier with an efficient searching of momentum equilibrium point)

  • This paper proposes a new COA (center of area) defuzzifier that is working in the accurate and fast manner. The proposed COA defuzzifier involves both membership values and the spans of membership functions in clauclating a crisp value. In additon, it avoid division by replacing the COA calculation with the searching of the momentum equilibrium point. The moment equilibrium point is searched in the coarse-to-fine manner such that the moment computing points during the coarse searching are moved in the interval of fuzzy terms until they are reached at two adjacent fuzzy terms searching method accerlates the finding of the moment equilibrium point by O(M) mazimally when compared iwth the equal interval searching method of ruitz. In order to verify the accuracy of the proposed COA defuzzifier, the crisp values obtained form the proposed coarse-to-fine searching are compared with the precise crisp values from the arithmetic calculation. Application to the truck backer-upper control problem of the proposed COA defuzzifier is presented. The control performance is compared with that of the conventional COA defuzzifier in tems of the average tracing distance.
