In this paper, we propose ontology-based recommendation system for supporting maintenance of Korean architectural heritage. This study includes the following: 1) design of ontology expressing repair information of architectural heritage, 2) creation of repair case DB, 3) creation of a recommendation system of repair method. For this study, we designed the ontology that expresses the information of Korean wooden building cultural heritage by referring to the existing heritage ontologies. Second, we created the repair information database based on the repair contents and the expert interview data provided by the National Institute of Cultural Heritage and the Cultural Heritage Administration. Third, we developed a system that recommends the repair method of Korean wooden architectural heritage with the most similar phenomena and causes. This study contributes to sharing repair knowledge and determining repair methods for architectural heritage repair.

Current CAD systems used in the AEC community have some critical problems. One of them is that they hardly support design collaboration. Thus designers and engineers are hard to transfer design knowledge from one discipline to another. What we need is a common building database which creates and manages building plans/models and relevant design knowledge consistently and effectively. This paper presents a powerful CAD editor, called UNIFORM, which is being developed. Currently UNIFORM includes three main modules: a plan generator, a 3-D model generator, and component databases. A plan generator, called UNIFORM PLANNER, creates a plan which contains semantically-rich information of building. Each component in the plan can be presented in various ways and connected to component databases that contain knowledge of building components such as windows, doors, walls, etc. Based on the plan UNIFORM MODELER, another module of the program, generates a three dimensional building model which could be a multiple-story building. One of the main ideas behind the system is that it generates and maintains a common building form that can be easily delivered to other members of the project team. Thus it is expected to increase system integration, team interactions, and productivity.

Recently, as the shape and function of high-rise buildings have become more complex, engineering for reflecting the constructability in the design phase has the increasing importance. However, engineering tasks are not performed at the appropriate level and timing in most projects, which leads to inefficient work such as design changes and reworks. Hence, this study investigated the constructability knowledge, design elements, and supporting tools required to conduct engineering tasks related to temporary work at the design phase, and also analyzed the relationship between these factors using the correlation analysis. As a result, when the engineering tasks are applied in the design phase, constructability knowledge related to 'construction method and process' is the most important and the design factor related to 'layout/arrangement' should be considered as the most important factor. Based on the results of this study, the project participants can efficiently use necessary constructability knowledge during the design phase and facilitate effective decision-making and design alternatives for enhancing constructability.

Drawings in construction industry are an aggregation of knowledge containing various information generated in a number of projects. Finish details are generated by architects when they select details and methods of construction by spaces or elements. However it is so difficult to re-use details in existing drawing management systems because there are so many details in a sheet and there are several many kinds of sheets in a file. In this paper, a drawing segmentation algorithm is suggested for managing building finish details individually. Based on this algorithm, a system module for making detail blocks from files of finish details is developed. Using the drawing segmentation module, interfaces of drawing management system are suggested in the paper. Management of individual detail blocks helps to reduce of the time for searching and increases productivity of designed drawings. Also it would contribute to increase quality of designed drawings by reusing of knowledge in detail blocks.

Cost Estimate for alternative in design phase of construction become criterion for profitability and feasibility analysis of projects. Initial design phase performed schematic estimate based on similar data in the past. The quantity take-off according to estimators experience and calculation method are occurred different or missing. IT (Information Technology) technology evolution has been promoting BIM technology in construction. It is changing the paradigm of planning, design, construction and maintenance phase throughout the construction project. A number of studies have been attempted to apply BIM technology in the construction. In this paper, we propose schematic estimation framework linking standard format IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) and estimate related knowledge. As a result, it performs a cost prediction for decision-making in the design phase, and expected to overcome the limitations of previous studies. In addition, it is possible actively coping with changes.
Even though Gothic architecture, one of the most technologically complex sophisticated structural systems, has been interpreted by art and architectural historians since the nineteenth century, we still cannot entirely comprehend either the medieval builder's constructional technique and structural knowledge or the meaning of Gothic architectural elements. The major reason is that contemporaneous written documentation concerning design methods and constructional techniques of medieval architecture is lacking. In 1955, the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris exhibited the sketchbook of the thirteenth century architect Villard do Honnecourt. After the exhibition, analysis on the architectural drawings of Villard's sketchbook had reported widely. Most of analysis on Villard, however, has been on his drawing and artistic style, and there has been very little published analysis of his profession and question on the author of the sketchbook. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the sketchbook and identify the artist who drew it. The sketchbook poses a number of unsolved questions. There is no doubt that several hands have contributed some drawing with appropriate captions, particularly in the section devoted to the application of practical geometry to problems of masonry and carpentry. Scholars have assumed and revealed that it was not made by only one person, and it dealt too many different fields and styles. Through this study, the sketchbook drawings consist of five different styles and person (original painter, master1, master2, master3, and the last owner), and they, not Villard, just redrew the original drawings and bound the sketchbook. Therefore, Villard de Honnecourt was just a mentor of the sketchbook and he did not participate any writing and drawing in the sketchbook.

The objective of this study is to observe today's situation and direction in relation with the natural air-conditioning and heating system to expand the architectural utilization of natural management for human comfort and energy conservation in architectural design. Also this study to provide the fundamental knowledge and. design-techniques on environment-friendly architecture in connection with 'natural idea in architecture'. In accordance with this intention, this thesis is composed of the following contents : 1) to understand the fundermental concepts about natural air-conditioning and heating system, 2) to review the traditional characteristics in Korean and Southeast Asian architecture related to natural air-conditioning and heating system, 3) to examine modern design-techniques in relation with natural air-conditioning and heating system in the selected area, 4) to attempt to synthesize the whole situation. Environment-friendly architecture using natural ideas and design-techniques in architecture is very important architectural aspect in a current architecture, also for the future. In spite of general considerations, it is expected that this study is use to understand the principle and practical application of natural air-conditioning and heating system in architectural design.
The purpose of this research is to understand Ko Yu-seop's perception of 'contemporary emerging architecture' in the West by investigating into his two early 1930s' articles: 'On Emerging Arts, Particularly the Cutting-edge Architecture' (Jan. 1931) and 'Russian Architecture' (Dec. 1932). As a result of the investigation, it is argued that he attempted to systematically describe his contemporary architecture, fromthe concept of 'modern' to representative architectural theories, and his suggested reference list is considered meaningful since it illustrates one aspect of how modern architectural knowledge was transferred to Korea at that time. As his limitation, however, it should be pointed out that a significant part of his writing was a verbatim translation of the Japanese critic Takao Itagaki's New Art Acquisition (1930). Nevertheless, the two articles give us a valuable understanding related to his socialist tendency, his preferred commune-type city-cum-architecture that reflects the ideology, etc. Hereafter, this understanding needs to be further discussed in both study areas of art history and architectural history in Korea.
The purpose of this research is to investigate Korean architects' perception of the Modern Movement in architecture in the West during the Japanese colonial period, by analyzing two Korean publications in the 1930s: Park Dongjin's 'Present Architectural Tendency' (Dong-A Ilbo, March 1931) and Hong Yunsick's 'Trend in the Thought of Moderne Baukunst' (Chogwang, September 1937). As a result of the investigation, it is confirmed that the two men welcomely accepted the universal modernity, regarding the rational and functional - rather than subjective expressions of the individual - as the key to modern architecture. Although their perception of the Modern Movement in Western architecture was inevitably superficial due to the limited condition of the Japanese colonial period in Korea, there was an obvious advancement in the latter's perception from the former's, reflecting the progress in knowledge of it over the six and a half years between the two. Therefore, it is argued that their 1930s' writings are meaningful as the first Korean publications that illustrate how Korean architectural circles perceived the contemporary architectural movement in the West.
As the environmental paradigm is the major issue today, the guideline of the ecological design in the interior architectural field is needed. One on the knowledge necessary to plan the ecological interior architecture as a designer is the spectification related factors for planning, which should be applied in materialistic matters. In this paper, the knowledge of materials and products needed to design interior space considering the ecological factors is studied. And, a guideline for the eco-design is investigated for the expression of the environmentally friendly perception.
