루이스 멈퍼드의 건축비평에서 미적 상징의 문제 (Aesthetic Symbolism in Lewis Mumford's Architectural Criticism)

  • One of the essential characteristics of Lewis Mumford's architectural criticism is the coherent emphasis on symbolism. Such emphasis stems from his understanding of city and humanity in the context of civilization: first, that the architecture symbolizes institutions of urban civilization; second, that the technical aspect of human nature should be balanced with its artistic aspects. Mumford believed that each architectural type requires an appropriate symbolic expression corresponding to its purpose and that a new symbolic expression, in a new cultural context, should replace the conventional expression. He took symbolism for an intuitional expression, and read multi-layered meanings of architecture: 'practical function' by way of rational reason and 'symbolic function' by way of intuition. He pursued a balance between practicality and beauty to rectify the situation of modern civilization, in which symbolism, the expression of its intuitional aspect, is in crisis. Ultimately, for Mumford, the essential task of architectural critic is of the interpretation of symbolism, aiming at the correspondence and communication between the architect(artist)'s intuition and critic(interpreter)'s via the media of symbol. The critic can play some privileged role of interpreting even symbols unintended by the architect. The ideal architectural critic, after all, would be the one who is able to understand the city, technology and human beings in the perspective of civilization and to interpret the architect's artistic expression in its highest form through intuition. Mumford established himself as such a critic and evaluated the status of aesthetic accomplishment of his contemporary architecture and technological civilization, giving emphasis on the artistic practice in architecture as a solution.

가상테이블상에서 비쥬얼 및 택타일 가이드를 이용한 건축 디자인 (Architectural Design using Visual and Tactile Guide in the Virtual Table)

  • 디스플레이 디바이스가 발전함에 따라 컴퓨터를 이용한 작업 환경이 응용 목적에 보다 적합한 형태로 변환하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 테이블 형태의 프로젝션 시스템인 가상테이블을 이용하여 건축 디자인 시스템의 개발에 관하여 고찰한다. 개발된 시스템은 인터랙티브 VR 모델러, 하이브리드 트랙커, 건축용 인터프리터로 구성되어 있다. 인터랙티브 VR 모델러는 가상테이블 상에서 건축 디자인을 보다 쉽고 직관적으로 할 수 있도록 그리드 인터랙션, 텐져블 프랍, 참조 객체와 같은 비주얼 및 택타일 가이드를 제공한다. 하이브리드 트랙커는 사용자 시야각에 따른 임의의 뷰포인트를 제공하는 기능과 핸드 인터랙션을 위한 비전 기반 트랙킹과 마그네틱 트랙킹을 포함하고, 건축용 인터프리터는 간단한 삼차원 매스를 건축적 정보를 포함한 기본 구성요소로 자동 변환하는 기능을 한다 제안 시스템은 다수의 사용자가 공동 작업을 하기에 적절하며 입체적인 뷰를 통하여 그래픽스 객체를 삼차원 공간에서 직접 조작할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 이와 같이 본 시스템은 건축 시뮬레이션 및 사용자 참여 디자인에 유용하게 사용되어질 수 있다.

미켈란젤로의 캄피돌리오 언덕계획의 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of Campidoglio Hill Plan by Michelangelo)

  • The Purpose of this paper is a study on the characteristics of Campidoglio hill plan by Michelangelo. 1. The plan of the Campidoglio hill is composed of the harmonized and united space, in spite of the existing conditions of a steep flight of land, a irregular site shape, a building of each other different dimension and form. And it is newly changed by site left through the modification of existing building elevation, utilization of existing building for new planning, connection with existing building and newly planned building from plaza composition of trapezoid form. 2. The concept of planning of the Campidoglio hill is planned by compromising for requirements of Baroque after Renaissance which urban planning characteristics of Baroque is as the relation with urban street through a inclined stairs and process such as street-approach stairs-plaza-symbol of inside plaza-building. 3. The section plan of the Campidoglio hill is planned by which can be easily approached to the plaza through the inclined stairs of gentle angle from street at the center east-west direction of main axis such as main axis, utilizing the existing site shape, and it is composed of the convex shape ascending gently at the center central part of the plaza. 4. The plan of the Campidoglio hill is composed of the elation with the axis of existing Senatorio palace, building planning of perfect balance, plaza composition of reversed trapezoid form bybuilding planning, central concentrated planning of buildings surrounding plaza. 5. The three palace of the plan of the Campidoglio hill is composed of the concept as theater which the stage background forms the front elevation of Senatorio palace higher two palace and the wings of either side of stage form the front elevation of Conservatori palace and Nuovo palace, surrounding three palace elevation around plaza of trapezoid form.

버강 시기 불탑의 형식적 특성과 분류 (Formal Characteristics and Classifications of Pagodas in the Period of Bagan)

  • This paper examines the pagodas during the Bagan period, which are thought to be most valuable among those in Myanmar. They have not been sufficiently studied, in spite of their high Buddhist status. It considers the contemplation of Pato, their formal characteristics in the Bagan period and the formal categorizations of pagodas in the same period. Thus, following seven kinds of conclusions are derived: first, researchers provide opinions to the Pato which should be regarded as the Buddhist shrine-type of pagoda with a unique Bagan form, symbolically indicating that Theravada Buddhism incorporated Hinduism; second, the terraces were characteristic components in pagodas, during the Bagan period, which were built after the enthronement of King Anawratha and are thought to symbolically express the wish to widely spread Theravada Buddhism; third, Shwesandaw Zedi seems to affect not only Shwezigon Zedi, a representative standard form of pagoda in Myanmar, but also Ananda Pato; fourth, it is thought to be proper to examine the terraces by classifying them into lower, central(from pedestals to Angryeon and Bokryeon) and upper part, if it intends to divide a pagoda with bell-shaped body on the terraces during the Bagan period, into three parts; fifth, the Pato may be identified as a form of pagoda during the Bagan period, and such a form can be classified as that of Sikhara on the rectangular terrace; sixth, forms of Myanmar's pagodas can be classified into fourteen kinds of them, and they may be also grouped into transmitted, general and special type; and seventh, on the basis of the findings, it is thought that the pagodas during the Bagan period may be classified into six forms, and they can be largely categorized into transmitted, general and special type.

원산거류지(元山居留地)의 도시공간(都市空間)의 형성과정(形成過程)에 관한 고찰(考察) (A Study On the Process of the Urban Form in Wonsan Concession)

  • This paper is one of Korean towns in the period of Korean-Modern, which play an important role in shaping the present cities of Korea. In the concrete, this study deals with the urban form of the Japanese Concession at Womsan where is the second Open Port in Korea. By the way, both of the Open Port and the Concession were the town that not exist before the period of Korean-Modern, and the town that symbolize the historical characters of the period of Korean-Modern. On this study, it is intended to analyze the situations of establishment, the process of the urban form, and the meanings of Concession, from 1880 to 1910, the period when had been kept up the nature of the Concession mainly. The Japanese Concession at Wonsan was urged it's establishment by Japan Government that is conscious of the purpose of foreign trade and military importance. But, it was slow in progress of developing town because of the distance from the capital 'Han Yang', today we called it Seoul, and lack of the background towns. However, after both the wars of 1895 and 1904, Japanese residents were incresed and urban aspects were advanced. The urban form of Japanese Concession was devided two territories by the natural circumstances, so that was made a difference on the period of the development. And finally, it had double axis on the form of district. Furthermore, by increasing of residence, it was occured that new Japanese resident arwa was occupied and expanded illegally between the road which is toward the existing Korean village 'Womsan-Jin(元山津)'. This indeed is the illegal extension of the Japanese Concession at Wonsan. Conclusively, Concession fumed out the primary factor that Korean towns are altered with the heterogeneous ones in the period of Korean-Modern.

가상환경의 미디어 형식에 대한 사용자 평가 연구 (A Study on the User Evaluation for Media Form of Virtual Environment)

  • As the use of virtual environment for decision-making interior or architectural design has been increasingly broaden, the choice of media form-physical, objective properties of a display medium-became and important issue to take into consideration. This research deals with the effects and differences between two types of media for a virtual environment; wall projection screen(120") and PC monitor(17"). In addition, efficient adoption of the two media forms was also proposed in this research. A total of 90 subjects participated in pre-designed three experimental groups(A group: experiment with a wall projection screen, B group: experiment with PC monitor, C group: both) and answer the seating preferences, the presence inventory, and the decision confidence using a simulated virtual restaurant environment. The results are as follows: (1) seating preferences for the tables located in frequent traffic area and near other spaces such as restroom and th kitchen are significantly different by the media form. While there is no significant difference found in seating preferences for most tables except high traffic areas near entrances between the two media. This result demonstrates the effects of media type or screen size on user perception for the areas near structural or interior design elements. (2) The presence measure in this research consist of in this research consist of four factors: 'spatial presence,' 'object presence,' 'positive effects,' and 'the factor of negative effects. 'The mean values of the items involving engagement or interaction in the spatial presence factor and the object presence factor are significantly different by the media form. A higher sense of presence of presence was observed in the wall projection screen. (3) PC monitor condition was shown to provide a higher level of decision confidence. Based on the research finding, conclusions and implications are discussed.

자유형상 보요소 해석을 위한 NURBS기반의 전·후처리 모듈 개발 (A Development of NURBS-Based Pre and Post Processor for Structural Analysis of Free-Shaped Beam)

  • 최근 빈번히 건설되고 있는 비정형 건축물들은, 개별부재의 수직/수평적 연결방식 에서 벗어나, 외관 및 내부 구성요소들의 단면이 자유롭게 변화되는 곡선의 형태를 띠고 있다. 이러한 구조물의 안정성 평가를 위해서 고전적 방식의 유한요소 해석기법이 적용된 상용프로그램이 사용되고 있으나, 과도한 절점분할 방식 또는 유한요소망(Finite Element Mesh)의 도입으로 인하여 해석시간이 길어지고 사용성 및 해석 정밀도가 낮은 문제점을 안고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는, 전술된 문제점을 개선하기 위하여, 임의의 곡률을 가진 단위 부재 및 단위요소에 대한 수학적 해석모형을 활용하여 비정형구조물에 대한 구조안정성 평가를 효과적으로 수행할 수 있는 전후처리 모듈을 개발하였다. 본 연구에서 개발된 전후처리 모듈은 곡선형 부재의 곡률을 NURBS 제어점을 이용하여 제어할 수 있도록 개발되었으며, 그로 인해 상용프로그램보다 빠른 형상 모델링이 가능하였다. 또한, 자유로운 형상에 대한 시각적 확인이 가능하여 비정형 건축물의 형상과 거동양상의 현실적인 묘사가 가능하였다.

비정형 콘크리트 패널의 수학적 알고리즘을 이용한 생산-설치 데이터 생성모델 기초연구 (A Basic Study on Data Estimation Model of Production-installation Using Mathematical Algorithm in Free-Form Concrete Panel)

  • Unlike the past, supported by the development of digital technologies, free-form buildings are frequently designed with creative thoughts of architectural designers. However, there are some difficulties preventing successfully completion of projects, like reduced productivity and increased construction duration and cost upon the process of producing and installing concrete panels for free-form structures. In particular, there are active studies on the CNC machine for production of free-form concrete panels. Yet, it is difficult to effectively and easily come up with information on production and installation of free-form, curve-surfaced panels which are difficult to be mathematically defined. This requires a lot of manpower and time to implement the curved surfaces of free-form buildings as intended by architects. Accordingly, it needs a model that can effectively create production-installation data of free-form concrete panels for successful free-form building projects. Thus, the purpose of the study is to suggest data estimation model of production-installation using mathematical algorithm in free-form concrete panels. The study results will realize effective production and installation of free-form concrete members, allowing improved productivity of projects, reduced cost and shortened construction duration.

한국${\cdot}$일본 전통건축공간의 지향성 (The Directivity of Traditional Architectural Space in Korean and Japanese)

  • As a circumstantial-existance character (the human character who takes action after grasping circumstances and fears things with reason) the Japanese were more interested in the active doctrines of Wang Yang-ming than other speculative studies. All of people were inhumanely incorporated into the rigorous class system under pressure in the samurai society. In the atmosphere of the society a natural phenomenon was understood as the ksana of change, and instead of the whole, the part was mainly described with emphasis on the reality. Therefore nature came near to the man after being reduced and then was symbolized in the Interior space. Also the classification of spaces, that is to say, the settlement of borders by the social position was shown in the great interior space like a labyrinth. As a self-existance character(the human style who carves out for and does not have a regard other's feeling), however, the Korean were much influenced by the Taoist Idea as they tried to be similar to nature in nature itself. Therefore the idea of Asaniskrota was in their origin. There was a tendency for space to be extended toward the outdoor in Korea, since the Korean people who are speculative and like to be natural tried to be close to nature. Therefore the division of spaces according to class and sexuality and the settlement of borders were already shown in outside by Che-Na-Num(Divided-Mass:Koren's own style). These are closely related with that houses were built after a village settle down in Korea while built before a village settle down in Japan. Architectural space consists of the interior and the exterior. The layout and (on of architectural space has a great variety of characters by region and culture. In other words, it can be understood which has a priority between the interior and the exterior in developing the layout and the form of architectural space. Belonging to the culture area of Chinese characters with Korea, Japan has maintained its own Identity. It has an identity in the layout and form of architectural space as well. Therefore, the architecture and architectural theories of the two countries were compared and analyzed with priority given to the traditional architecture, also the backgrounds of architecture and architectural theories of two countries were examined in this study. This study shows that each country has different characters in how to introduce nature, how to expand space and how to compose windows, including the view of nature and the cult of space. As a result, the space in Korean architecture has relatively the exterior-oriented character but in Japan architecture spatial character is interior-oriented. The interior-oriented character can be relevant to the word 'reduction' and the exterior-oriented character to 'extension' after all. Also it can be thought that each character has a great relation with climate and idea of people in power.

밀양 영남루 연혁 및 건축형식 변천에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Historic Changes of Yungnam-Ru in Historic Periods and Architectural Building Forms)

  • The purpose of this study is focused to the historic changes of Yungnam-Ru(嶺南樓), which are based on the site layout, and architectural forms in architectural building history and historic periods analyzed with the historic reference, paintings, and photos. This study is to search the alteration of the types of axis and the formation of spaces in Yungnam-Ru which is the Ru-Gak(樓閣) The conclusion of the architectural changes from the historic period and architectural form which is the belows. The first Yungnam-Ru by name had been used to be called, before it was re-called Yungnam-Ru by Kim Ju in 1365. Therefore, the hypothesis in naming Yungnam-Ru form assumption that the building under the name of Yungnam-Ru was re-named by Kim Ju from the Old Budist Temple called Yungnam-Sa, should re-considered in history. The second, it is considered that Milyang-Sibyi-Kyungdo(密陽十二景圖) as the painting can only be seen the site layout in 1542. It could be compared the differences of the site layouts from in 1542 to the present time. At that time Nyungpadang(凌派堂) was connected the main buildings called Yungnam-Ru Chimrudang(沈流堂),building was seperated with the Yungnam-Ru at that period. In 1542, the main Building(Yungnam-Ru) was consist of 5 spans of columns(from the front) and 2 spans of columns(from the side). Now, the main Building(Yungnam-Ru) has the 5 spans of columns from the front, and two spans of columns short from the side, compared to the present facade. At the past, Chimrudang(building) has the two spans of columns and one span of columns short, compared to the present facade. The third, It supposed that main building, Nyungpadang and Chimrudang in the composite of facade was connected with Wolrang(月廊) and Hunrang(軒廊) after invatioin from japan in 1592. 1844, (Chosun dynasty, Hunjong 10) the Yungnam-Ru was re-builted by maintaining the same concept in site layout of the past, and finally the three buildings was put together with Wolrang and Hunrang. As a result, the plan of the Yungnam-Ru was expanded with many aspects. From 1542 to 1844, the present site-layout gradually completed with three buildings which was spatially connected. The forth, in the middle age of Chosun dynasty, after added Gaeksa(客舍), the building is for the government officer staying temporally from outside province) in the site, the site layout was greatly changed with volume of building. In 1844, the Yungnam-Ru as the Nugak belongs to Miljukwan(密州館) was expanded spacially and formally. After that time, the burned buildings could not have been re-built because of aspects in government ability and economical ability.
