  • The establishment of invasive alien species management is widely recognized as a pivotal issue in the preservation of biodiversity. Ranunculus sardous Crantz, a species native to Europe, has been widely introduced in many other areas of the world, including the coasts of the United States, Australia, China, India, and Japan. In Korea, the first population of this plant was found growing adjacent to a wetland in Hanon, Seogwipo-si, Jeju Province, on 22 May 2018. Field observations confirmed the presences of at least two populations of this species in Jeju Province, Korea. This species is similar to Ranunculus sceleratus L., but can be readily distinguished by its presence of the trichomes in the whole plant, longer petioles of radical leaves, ovate-shaped leaf segments, globose to subglobose-shaped fruits and flat achenes with narrowly winged and papillae. The Invasive Alien Plant Risk Assessment (IAPRA), a system for recognizing and categorizing alien plants in Korea forests, was used to assess the invasiveness status of the species. Based on this system, R. sardous received a low score of 6, suggesting its potential invasion to natural forests. Although the current distribution of R. sardous is restricted to Jeju Province and thus far has had limited impact on local environments, local and regulatory authorities should pay close attention to this plant and take measures to prevent its further expansion.

  • The vascular plants of Cheonbongsan(608m) and its adjacent regions, located in Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do were surveyed from March to October 2005. The vascular plants collected 4 times were consisted of total 511 taxa; 104 families, 307 genera, 446 species, 3 subspecies, 56 varieties and 6 formas respectively. Among them, 12 taxa Korean endemic plants and 8 taxa of Korean rare plants were investigated in addition to 46 taxa of specially designated plants announced by the Ministry of Environment. The naturalized plants were 38 taxa, therefore naturalized ratio was 7.4%, higher than naturalized ratio average in Jeollanam-do.

  • Naturalized plants were identified and recorded in South Korea based on field surveys and related literatures. These plants consisted of 321 taxa in total, belonging to 40 families, 175 genera, 302 species, 15 varieties and 4 forms. Among the plants the family Compositae was dominant containing 68 taxa (21.2% of the total population) and Poaceae with 62 taxa (19.3%) successively. Most of the plants were herbs and only 7 taxa trees. 221 taxa (68.8%) appeared to have invaded the country during the third period (1964-2010). 41.8% (134 taxa) of the total population were originated from Europe. These invasive plants were assessed with the degree of naturalisation which was categorized as I-V types.

  • Two unrecorded Poaceae species, Anthoxanthum glabrum and Saccharum arundinaceum, are herein newly reported from Korea. Anthoxanthum glabrum (Ae-Gi-Hyang-Mo) was found in Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-do, Sangju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Hwasun-gun, Jeollanam-do. It is distinguished from A. nitens by the length of its spikelet, glume and lemma. Saccharum arundinaceum (Keun-Gae-Sa-Tang-Su-Su) was found in Mapo-gu, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, and Hwasun-gun, Jeollanam-do. It is distinguished from S. spontaneum by hair on the lower glume and according to the length of the hair on the callus of its spikelet. In this study, a description and illustrations of the species and photos of the habitat are provided.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate how the future users of a children's garden felt about the designing and operation of the children's garden, which is to be constructed within Korea National Arboretum. For this study, a total of 1,855 elementary school children were selected and then classified by sex and grade. The survey had been carried out to examine the following five items: necessity and advantages of the garden, plants suitable for it, artificial facilities required for it, its space structure, programs necessary for educational activities, and operation programs. The results are as follows: 1. Necessity and advantages of the children's garden: Some 87.7% of respondents said the garden is needed, it would serve for environmental preservation, it would function as a resting place, and it would have educational effect; 2. Plants suitable for it: Uncommon plants which have flowers of several colors; 3. Artificial facilities required for it: Places for experience and rest; 4. Programs necessary for educational activities: maze experiencing and gardening; and 5. Operation programs: Some 86.3% of the respondents said they are needed. They thought educational programs providing the activities of experiencing would be preferable. This study provides basic materials for the planning and designing of the children's garden. When constructing the garden, we should have enough prior discussion for the matters listed above. Furthermore, it is needed to develop several educational programs for efficient operation and management.

  • Asplenium septentrionale (L.) Hoffm., belonging to the family Aspleniaceae, was recently recorded for the first time in Gyeongsangbuk-do, Uljin-gun, Buk-myeon, Docheon-ri. This species is distributed in Northern America, Europe, and Asia. This species, which is related by taxa of Asplenium, is distinguished in that it possesses a leaf blade that is more or less dichotomously divided, forked 1-2(-3) times, and narrowly linear (5- 20 mm length) sori. The newly given Korean name, 'Sol-ip-go-sa-ri' reflects the presence of a linear leaf similar to Korean pine needles. A description of the key characteristics, an illustration, and photographs of the habitats of this plant are provided in this report.

  • In connection with biodiversity that has recently become the topic, competition to secure biological genetic resources is being heightened all over the world. Korea also has a variety of efforts to secure and preserve plant genetic resources, and has recognized the importance of the function and role of arboretums. Arboretums in Korea, however, have the problems in terms of quality due to the rapid increase. One of the problems is shortages in experts who are essential for the proper functioning of arboretums. To solve the problem, the State introduced Gardener Training Program certification system and started to train gardeners. However, gardeners who have actually employed at arboretums are less than 20% and thus the problem of shortages in experts still exists. In this context, this study examined 44 registered arboretums in Korea to find out the current situation of experts; analyzed arboretum experts and the program certification system in view of relevant laws; and investigated the current situation of training programs being operated in three Gardener Training Program certification organizations. Finally, this study conducted a survey of 68 gardeners who completed the training program at Chollipo Arboretum and tried to suggest a plan for securing experts from the gardener training programs. The plan for utilizing the trained gardeners as experts in arboretums is as follows: First, legal standards for the employment of experts in arboretums should be strengthened. Second, it is necessary to evaluate training programs, in order to raise the reliability of arboretum experts' expertise. Third, official validity that can be honored in all arboretums should be granted to a certificate of program completion. Finally, networks of gardeners who completed the programs should be formed through follow-up management of them.
