  • The peanut, unlike other plants, has three distinct steps in the reproductive process. These are the flowers, the peg and the fruit. This research was designed in the field to determine the difference of fruiting habit for each of plant types of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) in peanut culture limiting region. Eight cultivars representing four plant types, i.e., Virginia, Spanish, Valencia and Shinpung types. Number of pegs per plant produced in order of Spanish, Valencia, Virginia, Shinpung, Virginia type. The Virginia small seed type produced the most pods per plant. The shinpung type showed more percentage of matured pod than other types and early pot-set habit. Distribution of mature pods for each of branch positions to total mature pods occupied 63% on two cotyledonary branchs, 34% on 3rd to 5th branchs, 3% on over 6th branchs. Shinpung type was considered more favorable plant type than other types for breeding of early maturing high yielding variety because of early pot-set and high percentage of mature pod.

Effect of Far-Infrared Irradiation and Heat Treatment on the Antioxidant Activity of Extracts from Peanut (Arachis hypogaea) Shell (땅콩껍질 추출물의 항산화능에 대한 원적외선과 열처리 효과)

  • The effects of far-infrared (FIR) irradiation and heat treatment on the antioxidant activity of extracts from peanut shells was evaluated. Peanut shells were placed in pyrex petri dishes (8.0cm diameter) and irradiated at $150^{\circ}C$ for 5, 10, 15, 20, 40 or 60min with a FIR heater. After FIR irradiation or simple heat treatment at same conditions, methanol extracts of peanut shells were prepared and total phenol contents (TPC), radical scavenging activities (RSA) and reducing powers of the extracts were determined. The antioxidant activities of the extracts increased as the time of heating or FIR-irradiation increased. When peanut shells were FIR­irradiated at $150^{\circ}C$ for 5 min, the values of TPC, RSA, and reducing power of the extracts increased from 40.17mg/mL to 42.30mg/mL, $67.7\%\;to\;76.3\%$, and 0.569 to 0.639, respectively, compared to the untreated controls. Simple heat treatment of peanut shell under the same conditions $(150^{\circ}C\;for\;5min)$ also increased the TPC, RSA, and reducing power of the extracts from 40.17mg/mL to 43.52mg/mL, 67.7\%\;to\;79.3\%$ and from 0.569 to 0.623, respectively. The results indicate that appropriate FIR-irradiation or heat treatment on peanut shells could increase the antioxidant activities of methanolic extracts.

Quality characteristics of Jook prepared with peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) powder (땅콩분말을 첨가한 죽의 품질 특성)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) powder on the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of Jook. The proximate composition of peanut powder was as follows: moisture, 1.8%; crude protein, 24.9%; crude lipid, 48.3%; crude ash, 2.9%; and carbohydrates, 22.1%. Each sample of Jook contained 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% of peanut powder when compared to the control, and their physicochemical properties were assessed. As the peanut powder content increased, there was a significant decrease in pH (p<0.05) In addition, Hunter's color L value decreased, whereas Hunter's color a and b values increased with increasing addition of peanut powder. The Jook showed lower spreadability and higher viscosity values as the peanut powder content increased. The results of the sensory evaluation showed that the Jook containing 40~60% peanut powder had the highest score. According to the overall preference, addition of 40% peanut powder positively affected the quality characteristics of Jook. These results suggest that peanut powder can be applied to Jook to achieve beneficial effects on the quality and functionality.

Identification of Phenolic Compounds and Antioxidant Effects from the Exudate of Germinating Peanut (Arachis hypogaea)

  • Five phenolic compounds 1-5 were isolated for the first time from the exudate of geminating peanut (Arachis hypogaea). The structures were fully characterized by analysis of physical and spectral data. All isolated compounds were tested for antioxidant activities using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and hydroxyl radical. Compounds 2, 3, and 5 exhibited a strong scavenging effect on DPPH (2: $IC_{50}\;=\;10.4\;{\um}M$, 3: $IC_{50}\;=\;45.2\;{\mu}M$, 5: $IC_{50}\;=\;5.0\;{\mu}M$), and ABTS (2: $IC_{50}\;=\;9.6\;{\mu}M$, 3: $IC_{50}\;=\;5.5\;{\mu}M$, 5: $IC_{50}\;=\;3.3\;{\mu}M$) radical activity, whereas these compounds had weak hydroxyl radical scavenging activity ($IC_{50}\;>\;200\;{\mu}M$). The total phenolic contents of the extracts using n-hexane, EtOAc, and n-BuOH were found to be 96.4-964.3 mg gallic acid equivalent per g dry material (GAE/g) and n-BuOH fraction showed the highest total phenolic content (964.3 mg GAE/g). These studies suggest that the exudate of geminating peanut may possess possible health related benefits to humans.

Effect of Band Spotty Fertilization on the Yield and Growth of Peanut(Arachis hypogaea L.) in Plastic Film Mulching Cultivation (비닐피복 땅콩 재배시 생육 및 수량에 미치는 국소시비 효과)

  • This study was carried out to establish low-input fertilization and seeding technique using the simultaneous with seeding and fertilizer application machine and band spotty applicator which were manufactured for experiment during cultivation of mulching for peanut(Arachis hypogaea L.). The labor hour for seeding by simultaneous with seeding and fertilizing machine was appeared over 90% reduction effect compared with control plot($17.3hr\;10a^{-1}$). In band spotty fertilization plots, the emergence date was delayed about 4 days and the seedling stand rate was decreased 11~18% compared with control plot(man power). The content of total nitrogen of soil after experiment was increased while the contents of organic matter, available phosphate and exchangeable potassium were decreased than before experiment. The content of nitrogen forming nitrate was increased in band spotty fertilization(BSF) plots by increasing the amount of applied fertilizer from early growth stage till the middle growth stage. Growth rate was increased in band spotty fertilization plots and the absorbed amount of phosphate and potassium for peanut were increased in 70% band spotty fertilization plot compared with control plot. Yield of peanut was increased 70% in band spotty fertilization plot due to high pod kernel ratio and ripened pod rate compared with control plot($3,150kg\;ha^{-1}$). It was found that 70% band spotty fertilization was more effective as fertilization method to reduce both environmental pollution and chemical nitrogen fertilizer in plastic film mulching cultivation of peanut.

  • A new peanut variety "Pungan"(Arachis hypogaea ssp. hypogaea L.) was developed at the Department of Functional Crop, NICS(National Institute of Crop Science), in Milyang in 2008. It was developed from the cross between the high-yielding cultivar "Saedl" and the very short stem cultivar "Satonoka". "Pungan", a Virginia palnt type, has 20 branches with long ellipseshaped large grains. The 100 grain weight was 88 g, 7 g heavier than the check variety Daekwang. This variety is more resistant to late leaf spot and web blotch compared to Daekwang, a check variety. Moreover, it is lodging resistant owing to its short stem. "Pungsan" outyielded the check variety by 16% with 4.67 MT/ha in regional yield trials.

  • A new peanut variety "Pungsan" (Arachis hypogaea ssp. hypogaea L.) was developed at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute, NICS, in Milyang in 2007. It was derived from a cross between a short stem cultivar "Satonoka" and a high-yielding local cultivar "Yecheon". "Pungsan" is the Virginia plant type. It has 18 branches per plant and 40 cm of main stem height. Each pod with long-ellipse shaped large kernel has two grains with light-brown testa and 100 seed weight was 95g in the regional yield trials (RYT). "Pungsan" showed more resistant to web blotch compared with check variety. In the regional yield trials "Pungsan" was outyielded in grain yield to the check variety by 16% with 4.45 MT/ha for grain.

  • A new peanut cultivar "Jopyeong" (Arachis hypogaea ssp. hypogaea L.) was developed at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute, NICS, in Milyang in 2006. It was developed from the cross between the very short stem cultivar "CUP brittle" and the high-yielding cultivar "Daekwang". "Jopyeong" which is Virginia plant type has 23 branch number per plant with early maturing and ellipse-shaped large kernel. Each pod has two grains with brown testa and 100 seed weight was 87g in the regional yield trials (RYT). This variety also showed more resistant to late leaf spots compared with check one. Especially it has resistance to lodging owing to short stem and erect plant type. In the regional yield trials "Jopyeong" was out-yielded than check variety by 11% with 8.37 ton/ha for fresh pod and by 4% with 3.95 ton/ha for grain.

Development of Selectable Marker of High Oleate Trait in Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) (땅콩에서 고 올레인산 형질관련 분자마커의 선발)

  • Peanut(Arachis hypogaea L.) is one of the major oilseed crops. The peanut oil consists of palmitic, oleic and linoleic acids, which are present at levels of 10%, 36-67% and 15-43%, respectively. High oleate mutant of peanut F435 contains 80% oleate and as little as 2% linoleate in seed oil. Previous study indicated that delta 12 fatty acid desaturase is a major enzyme controlling the oleate content in seeds of oilseed crops. F435 sequence alignment of their coding regions disclosed that an extra A(adenine) was inserted at the position +2,823 bp of delta 12 fatty acid desaturase gene. This study was to develop molecular marker (SNP marker) co-segregating with the high oleate trait. Chopyeong ${\times}$ F435 $F_2$ 41 population were investigated using molecular marker and fatty acid assay (NIR and gas chromatography). Finally, this marker segregates Chopyeong type 26 lines, heterotype 9 lines and F435 type 6 lines. These results in our study suggested that SNP marker conform fatty acid assay.

A New Early Maturing, Lodging Resistance and High Yielding Vegetable Peanut "Seonan" (조숙 내도복 다수성 풋땅콩 품종 "선안")

  • A new peanut variety "Seonan" (Arachis hypogaea ssp. hypogaea L.) was developed at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute, NICS, in Milyang in 2007. It was developed from the cross between the erect short stem cultivar "SP9128" and the high-yielding cultivar "Daekwang". "Seanan" which is Virginia plant type has 18 branch number per plant with early maturing and long-ellipse shaped large kernel. Each pod has two grains with brown testa and 100 seed weight was 87 g in the regional yield trials (RYT). Especially this variety has resistance to lodging owing to short stem. The free sugar and tannin content of fresh peanut are 3.7% and 0.48%, respectively, similar to check variety. In the regional yield trials "Seonan" was outyielded than check variety by 14% with 8.59 MT/ha for fresh pod and by 7% with 3.75 MT/ha for grain.
