  • In this study, 6-10 clinically healthy farmed abalone, Haliotis discus hannai were obtained from Jeollanam-Do Wando Soan-myeon, Bogil-myeon, and Nohwa-eup monthly for 1 year 7 months and were examined histopathologically. As a result, the adductor muscle had severe cellular swelling and myonecrosis. These lesions were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and Giemsa. The lesions were not caused by infection of bacteria or parasites. We investigated the relationship between lesion frequency and water temperature and discovered that increased water temperature was associated with increasing lesion frequency. As water temperature is related to growth rate, increased growth rate was closely related to increased lesion frequency. We considered that these lesions could be a useful factor in measuring shellfish health.

  • Vibrio alginolyticus, a marine fish and shellfish pathogen, has been found at a high frequency around the coastal areas of Korea. Vibrio alginolyticus was purified from various diseased fish, and a V. alginolyticus-specific bacteriophage was isolated from seawater obtained from fish farms located on the west coast of Korea. In a bacterial lysis experiment using the phage and antibiotics, tetracycline, $10^3$ cfu/ml of V. alginolyticus were completely lysed by both the phage and the antibiotic, suggesting that the purified phage in the study could be utilized as an alternative to antibiotics in the control of fish and shellfish diseases caused by V. alginolyticus.

  • In this study, the veridical efficacy of an aquatic disinfectant tablet composed to calcium hypochlorite against red sea bream iridovirus (RBIV). A veridical efficacy was determined with the viability of RBIV contacted with the disinfectant in viral stock cultured in fat head minnow cell line. An aquatic disinfectant tablet and RBIV were reacted on the distilled water (DW), hard water (HW) or organic matter suspension (OM) condition. On DW and HW condition, RBIV was inactivated with 25,000 fold dilutions of an aquatic disinfectant tablet. With the investigation of the antiviral effect of the disinfectant on OM condition, RBIV was inactivated on 22,000 fold dilutions of an aquatic disinfectant tablet. As an aquatic disinfectant tablet possesses veridical efficacy against RBIV, the disinfectant solution can be used to limit the spread of cultured marine fish viral disease.

  • The aquatic animals of Tan stream were composed of 46 species, 28 families, 11 orders, 6 classes in 4 phyla during the survey period of April, 1996 to December, 1996. They were composed of 31 species in aquatic insecta, 6 species in annelida, 3 species in mollusca, 1 species in crustacea, and 5 species in fishes, respectively. Major dominant species in Tan stream were Chironomidae sp.1, Chironomidae sp.2, Chironomidae sp.3, Tubufucidae sp.1, Physa acuta and hirudo niponica. Dominance indices of benthic macroinvertebrates ranged highly from 95.74 to 100.00% at lower stream(site 4), but ranged 50.00 to 95.85% at site 1 through site 3. The aquatic animals ranged from 25 to 32 species at site 1 through site 3, but they were only 3 species at site 4 for survey period. Tan stream in the light of urban stream ecosystem has a little less riffle areas and hydrophyte areas by cementation of riparian area and channel type of water course. Therefore, the species of aquatic animals in Tan stream decreased because of deterioration of water quality according to reduction of self-purifcation ability and loss of microhabitat according to reduction of hydrophyte areas and riparian areas. The tendency of decreasing species of aquatic animals appeared seriously at lower stream From drive licence test authority at Kangnam-ku, Seoul to conjunction point of the Han river.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of aquatic plant as a botanical air purification on the indoor air pollution by formaldehyde. Three aquatic plants such as Eichhornia crassipes, Cyperus alternifolius, Echinodorus cordifolius, were selected for this study and they were placed in the artificially contaminated chamber under laboratory condition. The results showed that all three plants could remove the formaldehyde from the contaminated air system effectively. Reduction in the formaldehyde levels by Eichhornia crassipes, which is the floating plant, might be associated with the factors of plant and water. Reduction in the formaldehyde levels by Cyperus helferi and Echinodorus cordifolius, which were emergent plant, was due to the complex effect of plant, soil medium and water. In aquatic plant system, dissolution, microbial degradation in rhizosphere, uptake through root and shoot, sorption to soil and shoot, hydrolysis are known as the main mechanisms of water soluble pollutants in the given system. The advantages of indoor air quality control system using aquatic plants can be; 1) various purifying mechanisms than foliage plants, 2) effective for decontamination of water soluble pollutants; 3) easy for maintenance; 4) diverse application potential. Therefore it was suggested from the results that indoor air control system of aquatic plants should be more effective for reduction of indoor air pollutants.

  • During the last two decades, the rapid increase in aquaculture world wide, particularly in finfish and shellfish culture, is the result of both area expansion and production intensification. Under these conditions, the prevalence and spread of infectious diseases have increased as a result of higher infection pressure and decreased resistance of the aquatic animals. Accordingly, the effective control of infectious diseases has become more and more important to development of aquaculture. Recently the Pathology Team of National Fisheries Research and Development(NFRDI), has played pivotal roles in establishing the national management and control system of aquatic animal health and disease by new legislative works and technical guidelines. Under the national aquatic animal disease control framework, the Pathology Team of NFRDI and MOMAF(Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries) should also establish effective management and regulations, with the support of enforcement and monitoring policies. In conjunction with effective aquatic disease national management, financial assistance or alternative compensation options for aquaculture should also be available in the event of production losses or eradication system.

  • It has been reported that various anti-oxidant substances stimulate non-specific immune responses in fishes. In this study it was examined whether N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an anti-oxidant glutathione (GSH) precursor, can modulate non-specific immune parameters in 8 different fishes. NAC was intraperitoneally administered at 10 mg/kg to catfish (Silurus asotus), loach (Misgurnus mizolepis), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), crucian carp (Carassius carassius), eel (Anguilla japonica), snakehead (Channa argus), tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and mullet (Mugil cephalus). Forty-eight hours later, chemiluminescence (CL) response of head-kidney leukocytes and serum lysozyme activity were assessed. In all fishes except crusian carp and loach, CL responses were amplified by NAC. Lysozyme activity was increased by NAC in all fish species but not in tilapia. This result suggests that NAC stimulates non-specific immune responses in various species, and that such effects may have beneficial significance in aquaculture for practical utilization.

  • Disease monitoring in wild aquatic animals is necessary to obtain information about disease occurrence, disease agents, and the transmission of diseases between wild and cultured species. In this study, we monitored viral diseases in wild marine fish and crustacea caught by trawl in Korea in April and October 2018. We monitored the viral diseases in 977 fish from 39 different species and 287 crustacea from 14 different species. In fish, we collected kidney and spleen to detect viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV), red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV), marine birnavirus (MABV), hirame rhabdovirus (HRV), and lymphocystis disease virus (LCDV). In crustacea, we monitored white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV), taura syndrome virus (TSV), infectious myonecrosis virus (IMNV), yellowhead disease virus (YHDV), and white tail disease virus (WTDV) using pleopods, pereiopods, gills, muscle, and hepatopancreases. Although none of the viral diseases tested in this study were detected in the samples, these results will help disease control between aquaculture species and wild aquatic animals.

  • This study were investigated the effects to the starting-time of the applied aquatic exercise to the functional healing phase on the Achilles tendon injured rats. The Spraque-Dawley female rats weights($246{\pm}18g$) were assigned to the four groups(24 rats), all experimental groups were able to walling training for 20 min. on the rolling bar motor before injured, one group; control group and three groups; aquatic exercise groups, The aquatic groups were derived into the first day, fourth day and seventh day groups after injuring Achilles tendon according to the levels of aquatic exercise. This studied were investigated the effects of functional healing after appling the aquatic exercising after first day, fourth day and seven days after injured Achilles tendon by the method of rolling bar-motor(Jc-35L-H/GEAR MOTOR, DC, 12V-20RPM, TAIWAN)R.O.C. and to the phase of healing phase to the Achilles tendon. After injuring Achilles tendon, the starting-times of walling on the rolling bar motor were showed from 10th day in the first day aquatic groups, after injuring, from the eight day of fourth day and seventh day aquatic groups, but those, of the all aquatic groups were not significantly showed from the ninth day after injured in the control group. There were showed healing phase without adherence like normal tissue from the fourth day group after injured to the control group. The results stewed that aquatic exercising were effected the healing phase to the injured Achilles tendon to apply exercise, after being the late period of inflammation.
