  • The D-optimal design criterion for precise parameter estimation in nonlinear regression analysis is called the determinant criterion because the determinant of a matrix is to be maximized. In this thesis, we derive the gradient and the Hessian of the determinant criterion, and apply a QR decomposition for their efficient computations. We also propose an approximate form of the Hessian matrix which can be calculated from the first derivative of a model function with respect to the design variables. These equations can be used in a Gauss-Newton type iteration procedure.

  • Numerical characteristics of implicit upwind schemes, such as upwind ADI, line Gauss-Seidel (LGS) and point Gauss-Seidel (LU) algorithms, for Navier-Stokes equations have been investigated. Time-derivative preconditioning method was applied for efficient convergence at low Mach/Reynolds number regime as well as at large grid aspect ratios. All the algorithms were expressed in approximate factorization form and von Neumann stability analysis was performed to identify stability characteristics of the above algorithms in the presence of high grid aspect ratios. Stability analysis showed that for high aspect ratio computations, the ADI and LGS algorithms showed efficient damping effect up to moderate aspect ratio if we adopt viscous preconditioning based on min-CFL/max-VNN time-step definition. The LU algorithm, on the other hand, showed serious deterioration in stability characteristics as the grid aspect ratio increases. Computations for several practical applications also verified these results.

  • In this study, the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is used to obtain the optimized proportional-integral-derivative (PID) gain value that can quickly recover the motion of a quadcopter after a disturbance. Prior to PID control, the four-rotor quadcopter interval was defined using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Through the definition of this model, the PID control algorithm was generated. To construct a response surface model, D-optimal programming was used for the generation of experimental points. For this purpose, a gain value that satisfies both the roll and altitude PID gain values is obtained. Using the NSGA-II, the gain value of shorten time of the quadcopter motion control can be optimized.

  • In this paper, we present a split least-squares characteristic mixed finite element method(MFEM) to get the approximate solutions of the convection dominated Sobolev equations. First, to manage both convection term and time derivative term efficiently, we apply a least-squares characteristic MFEM to get the system of equations in the primal unknown and the flux unknown. Then, we obtain a split least-squares characteristic MFEM to convert the coupled system in two unknowns derived from the least-squares characteristic MFEM into two uncoupled systems in the unknowns. We theoretically prove that the approximations constructed by the split least-squares characteristic MFEM converge with the optimal order in L2 and H1 normed spaces for the primal unknown and with the optimal order in L2 normed space for the flux unknown. And we provide some numerical results to confirm the validity of our theoretical results.

  • Two edge detection methods are devised and tested. First one makes use of mean-difference between two connected regions after bimodal thresholding within a local window. It appears experimentally to provide reduced edge width maintaining good connectivity. It seems due to the use of the threshold obtained from a larger neighborhood. Second one uses additionally the gradient information to detect approximate zero crossing points of second directional derivative. This provides edges thinned nearly to one pixel width.

  • Although many advanced control strategies and concepts have been proposed recently, the most popular controller in the process industries is the PID controller because of its simplicity, easy implementation, and robustness. A multiloop PID controller design method using the general IMC tuning rule is presented in this paper. The IMC-PID controller is formed by combining the integral term designed by considering interactions between the individual loops with the proportional and derivative terms designed in circumstance neglecting the interactions. The multiloop PID controller designed by the proposed method can approximate the ideal multiloop controller throughout overall frequency range, and ...

  • In this paper, the adaptive fuzzy system is used as an adaptive approximator for robot nonlinear dynamic. A theoretical justification for the adaptive approximator is proving that if the representive point(RP or switching function) and its derivative in sliding mode control are used as the inputs of the adaptive fuzzy system, the adaptive fuzzy system can approximate robot nonlinear dynamics in the neighborhood of the switching surface. Thus the fuzzy controller design is greatly simplified and at the same time, the fuzzy control rule can be obtained easily by the reaching condition. Based on this, a new method for designing an adaptive fuzzy control system based on sliding mode is proposed for the trajectory tracking control of a robot with unknown nonlinear dynamics.

  • In this paper, we use Newton's method to approximate a locally unique solution of an equation in Banach spaces and introduce recurrent functions to provide a weaker semilocal convergence analysis for Newton's method than before [1]-[13], in some interesting cases, provided that the Fr$\acute{e}$chet-derivative of the operator involved is p-H$\ddot{o}$lder continuous (p${\in}$(0, 1]). Numerical examples involving two boundary value problems are also provided.

  • In this study, an approximate method for calculating the directional spectrum of waves encountering a current in shallow water is developed. The wave trains in tile directional spectrum are assumed to be linear and Gaussian; development of the spectrum requires that the waves also be short crested. The Miche's breaking criterion is imposed to determine the upper limit of wave height and to establish an expression for the breaking wave elevation in terms of the ideal wave's elevation and the second time derivative of wave elevation. Two examples are given; one for a Wallops directional spectrum encountering a shear current and another with an upwelling current.

  • In meshless methods, the moving least squares approximation technique is widely used to approximate a solution space because of its useful numerical characters such as non-element approximation, easily controllable smoothness, and others. In this work, a generalized version of the moving least squares method Is introduced to enhance the approximation performance through the Information converning to the derivative of the field variable. The results of numerical tests for approximation verify the improved accuracy of the generalized meshless approximation procedure compared to the conventional moving least squares method. By using this generalized moving least squares method, meshless analysis of thin beam is carried out, and its performance is investigated.
