In order to prepare allowable guidelines for weight loss for packed agricultural produces during distribution after harvest, resipration and transpiration rates were investigated for fruits such as peach, apple, pear, persimon and mandarin which produced in Korea. Respiration and transpiration rates were widely different from cultivar and harvesting season among same produces. Respiration rates were increased as an environmental temperature was increased. Moisture amount that produced by respiration in five fruits was 3.55∼107.67mg/kg/h and those moisture amounts were considered as no much influence for the strength of cartons for packing of fruits. Moisture amount produced from transpiration was 24 ∼ 1,195g for 15kg packing unit of fruits in 5 days. after harvest.
For enhancement of apple productivity, the calcium fertilizers to increase the calcium content of fruit, and reduce the incidence of bitter pit in apples are applied. Crushed oyster shell contains a plenty of calcium carbonate, and a very small amount of boron, ferrous, and manganese. A field study was conducted to determine the optimum level of crushed oyster shell for soil nutrient management, and its effect on the induction of bitter pit in cultivar 'Gamhong' apple. The application of crushed oyster shell increased organic matter, available phosphate, and exchangeable cation concentration in soil. We found a significant positive correlation between soil pH, and application level of crushed oyster shell in both top, and subsoils. The incidence of bitter pit in apple fruit at the harvest stage was significantly higher in non treatment and calciummagnesium carbonate treatment than on over applications 4 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for crushed oyster shell. However, the optimum level of crushed oyster shell was 2 Mg $ha^{-1}$, especially considering the soil Ca content, soil pH, fruits weight, and yield. Our results show that the crushed oyster shell can be effective in restoring the soil nutrient balance, and inducing the bitter pit in apple fruit.
The pathogenicity to pear trees and other experimental hosts of the Apple stem grooving virus Korean isolate (ASGV-K) carried by a fungal vector, Talaromyces flavus was examined. ASGV-harboring T. flavus induced mild symptoms on virus-free pears. Symptom severity was intermediate between pears showing typical PBNLS and virus-free pears. Ten cultivars of Phaseolus vulgaris showed 35%-90% infectivity by direct infiltration into leaves and roots by ASGV-harboring T. flavus. Application of fungal cultures to soils showed 0%-70% infectivity depending on the P. vulgaris cultivar. Sap extracted from ASGV-infected Chenopodium quinoa induced similar symptoms on P. vulgaris at 25 days after inoculation. Similar symptoms were also detected on P. vulgaris which were inoculated with ASGV-harboring T.flavus. When healthy P. vulgaris leaves were challenged with sap extracted from P. vulgaris leaves infected with ASGV-harboring T. flavus, typical symptoms were observed. These data suggest that T. flavus mediates the transfer of ASGV to host plants.

Current status on the occurrence and the management of the major disease, insect and mite pests were investigated in the organic or non-chemical pest control orchards from 2005 to 2009. Numbers of certified organic or non-chemical apple orchards were increased from 14 in 2005 to 78 in 2008. Severe damages on leaves and fruits occurred by the several diseases such as marssonina blotch, bitter rot, white rot, sooty blotch and flyspeck, and the several insect pests such as apple leaf-curling aphid, woolly apple aphid, oriental fruit moth and peach fruit moth on the almost certified organic or non-chemical pest control orchards. About 10 and 18 environmental-friendly materials were used to control diseases and insect or mite pests respectively. But, lime sulfur and bordeaux mixture to diseases and machine oil, plant oil mixed with egg yolk, and pheromone mating disruptions to insect pests were effective to control under the adequate conditions. At present, it is extremely difficult to produce organic apples in Korea. Growers must consider about and solve so many conditions on the cultivar, weather, local site, marketing and so on, before when they decide to change from conventional or IPM(Integrated Pest Management) to organic or non-chemical pest control orchards.

This study was conducted to investigate the influence of different polyethylene film (P.E. film) for mulching on the changes in soil temperature and the production of good feathered apple nursery trees. M.9 rootstocks with stem diameter of 9.1~11.0 mm were planted in plots covered with different P.E. film (i.e., transparent P.E. film, black P.E. film, and bare soil as control). Three weeks after planting, the rootstocks were veneer grafted with 'Sinano Sweet' apple cultivar. In the middle of June, BA was sprayed to nursery for inducing feathering during the growing season. The soil temperature of the control was higher than air temperature by about $0.7^{\circ}C$ from mid April to early October, and that of P.E. film mulching was about $1{\sim}5^{\circ}C$ higher than that of the control. The soil temperature under transparent P.E. film was about $2{\sim}3^{\circ}C$ higher than that under black P.E. film. The diurnal range of soil temperature under the black P. E. film was lowest among all treatments. The P.E. film mulching induced better tree growth and feathering than bare soil. Percentage of good feathering apple nursery of black P.E. film was highest among all treatments because the soil temperature unuder black P.E. film in the early growing season was higher than that of the control and the number of days when the maximum soil temperature was over $35^{\circ}C$ in the summer was lower than that under the transparent P.E. film.
The effect of different exposed length of M.9 rootstock on growth and yield was tested in the new apple cultivars. The 'Seohong', 'Summer Dream', and 'Hongguem' grafted on M.9 rootstock were planted in March 2010. The trees were planted in such a way that the exposed length of the rootstock to be 10, 20 and 30 cm. The result showed that as decreasing exposure length, TCA of 'Seohong', 'Summer Dream', and 'Hongguem' was increased between $3^{rd}$ and $6^{th}$ year after planting. The TCA of 20 cm and 30 cm exposure length showed respectively 70% and 60% in 'Seohong', 88% and 66% in 'Summer Dream', and 55% and 41% in 'Hongguem' of the TCA with 10 cm exposure length on 6-year-old trees. Tree height, canopy width, shoot length and terminal shoot length were also increased according to decreased exposure length in 6-year-old trees. The cumulative yield of three cultivars was higher in the tree with a lower exposure length between $4^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ year after planting. The cumulative yield of 20 cm and 30 cm exposure length showed respectively 77% and 63% in 'Seohong', 85% and 76% in 'Summer Dream', and 73% and 58% in 'Hongguem' of the cumulative yield with 10 cm exposure length in 6-year-old trees. Considering tree growth and yield, the optimum exposure length of M.9 was 10 cm for 'Seohong', 'Summer Dream' and 'Hongguem'.

'Hongro' is one of the important mid-season apple cultivars bred in Korea. The recent occurrence of water core in Hongro and the consequent problems motivated this study. The objectives of our study were to investigate the influence of air temperature during the growing period on water core occurrence in Hongro and to provide methods to mitigate its impact. Based on our field experiments for three years, the results indicated that the occurrence of water core disorder was due to the prolonged exposure to high temperature ($T_a$) of >$30^{\circ}C$ during the ripening period. The rates of occurrence of water core disorder were higher in the fruit whose weight was more than 300g or those located outside the tree canopy and thus exposed to stronger solar radiation. In terms of mitigating the water core occurrence, the application of spraying $CaCl_2$ four times from late July to August was effective. Furthermore, between 1 and 15 August when the rate of occurrence was high with $T_a$ (from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.) >$30^{\circ}C$, the micro-water sprinkling for 30 minutes starting at 6:00 p.m. with a supplementary spray conducted two hours after the first application drastically reduced the water core occurrence.
The study was carried out to examine the initial point of dormancy, breaking time of internal dormancy, and to find out the accumulated hours of low temperature (under $7.2^{\circ}C$ from $0.0^{\circ}C$ to $7.2^{\circ}C$) for bud-breaking. Over-all, the chilling requirement for breaking of internal dormancy in the commercial apple cultivars ('Fuji' and 'Tsugaru') and apple cultivars bred in Korea ('Hongro', 'Sunhong', 'Honggeum', 'Hongan', 'Hongso', 'Gamhong', 'Summer dream') at the Gunwi region for 4 years (from 2009 to 2012) was investigated. Also, the breaking time of internal dormancy in the field at the Gunwi region and the breaking time of dormancy if air temperature of Gunwi region rises $4^{\circ}C$ higher than the current one were investigated using the same data. The initial point of dormancy was set at the time when the lateral bud breaking did not occurred (when heading back cutting was done in the middle of terminal shoots). The occurrence of the breaking of internal dormancy was decided if the breaking of the terminal bud of bourse shoot occurred within 15 days or not in growth chamber. About 100 bourse shoots were collected by cultivar classification in early December every year and were stored at $5.0^{\circ}C$, and they were placed in growth chamber at one week interval. The chilling requirement of cultivars was expressed in accumulated hours in the field and in the growth chamber under $7.2^{\circ}C$ and $0.0-7.2^{\circ}C$ from the initial point of dormancy to the breaking time of internal dormancy. The results showed that the initial point of dormancy in selected cultivars could occur at the end of September. The breaking time of internal dormancy could occur from the end of January to the early of February. The accumulated hours under $7.2^{\circ}C$ for breaking of internal dormancy were 1,600-2,000 hours, while those of $0.0-7.2^{\circ}C$ were 1,300-1,800 hours. In comparing the different apple cultivars, the chilling requirement of the early flowering cultivars seemed lower than that of the late-flowering cultivars. Based on these results, if the air temperature of Gunwi region rises about $4.0^{\circ}C$ higher than the current one, the breaking time of internal dormancy will be delayed by 2-4 weeks.

For functional enhancement of apples, the effects of CuEDTA and FeEDTA foliar spray were investigated on the antioxidant contents and antioxidant activities in 'Hongro' fruit, which is a representative early season harvesting apple cultivar, at 30 days before harvest. The polyphenolic content of peel was significantly higher in the CuEDTA (1,228.6 mg/100 g) and FeEDTA (1,210.0 mg/100 g) spraying treatment groups compared to the control group (998.8 mg/100 g). The flavonoid content of peel showed the same trend as that of polyphenolic content. The ascorbic acid content of peel as also significantly increased in the CuEDTA and FeEDTA spraying treatment groups, but anthocyanin content was the highest in the control group (560.6 mg/100 g). The ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities were higher in the CuEDTA and FeEDTA spraying treatment groups than in the control group, but reducing power was not significantly different between the treatments. As a result of this study, 3% CuEDTA and FeEDTA spraying treatments at 30 days before harvest can be used to effectively enhance antioxidant contents in 'Hongro' apple.

'Hongro' is one of the most important apple cultivars whose growing area is increasing because of its good quality. Recently fruit shrinking symptom causing decrease of fruit size, juice, and quality, appears in some commercial 'Hongro' orchards. The average frequency of occurrence of fruit shrinking symptom was 12 % of total trees investigated and Apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV) was detected from all the trees showing fruit shrinking symptom by ELISA. A typical virus infection symptom of leaf epinasty and stem necrosis appeared on woody indicators, Spy227 and Virginia crab grafted with infected trees and all the grafted trees showed positive reaction to ACLSV antiserum by ELISA. It was proved that ACLSV can be easily transmitted by grafting. ACLSV was also isolated from the leaves of C. quinoa inoculated with sprouting leaf sap of infected trees. To prove that the fruit shrinking symptom was caused by ACLSV infection, ACLSV-infected scion was grafted on virus-free 'Hongro/M9' and the fruit characteristics were investigated. Consequently the same symptoms of fruit size and juice decreasing were observed from the trees grafted with ACLSV-infected scion. Therefore, it is suggested that the fruit shrinking symptom is caused by ACLSV infection and 'Hongro' can be classified as sensitive cultivar to ACLSV.
