Environment-friendly materials are increasingly used as building construction materials nowadays, and the market share of those is growing. Accordingly, the research and developments in terms of environmental value are progressing steadily now. The main characteristics of environmental products are far-infrared radiation, negative-ion emission, electromagnetic wave shielding, and antimicrobial property. These products are often used in mortar and as spray on the finishing material. Nevertheless, there are hardly any research on the functional properties of concrete, the main material in construction field. Thus, we evaluated such basic properties of concrete as slump, compressive strength and air content while using such functional materials as sericite, wood-pattern sandstone, carbon black and nano-metric silver solution to focus on their functional properties like far-infrared radiation, negative ion emission, electro magnetic wave shielding, and antimicrobial activity in this research. The results indicated that the most useful material in the functional materials was carbon black. Sericite and nano-metric silver solution had a little effect on the functional property. Moreover, although wood-pattern sandstone had very high functional property, it exhibited too low compressive strength to be applied, to concrete as a factory product. Antimicrobial property of nano-metric silver solution in the concrete was not clear demonstrated, but if these specimens were to be aged in $CO_2$ gas for a long time, it might be apparent.

Underwears treated by aroma capsule(UTA) have been known to have many advantages than normal underwears, for example, UTA has antimicrobial and deodorant properties. In this experiment, we examined antimicrobial and deodorant effect of UTA treated by rose and lemon fragrance, Mechanical properties of UTA including surface property, bending property and shear property were also tested. The results are as follows,1. The effects of antibacterial is estimated as 33% and the efficiency of deodouration is about 95 % in UTA. 2. The fragrance of UTA maintained even after 25 times washout. 3. Bending and shear properties were not changed in UTA However it decreased the coefficient of friction of the textures and the smooth surface was detected when the human skin was contacted.
We examined the antimicrobial effects of the cotton fabrics which were laundered at different conditions and treated with a colloidal silver solution using Staphylococcus aureus. Colloidal silver solution was made from commercial colloidal silver generator by electrolysis. The fabric which was innoculated and washed with water before drying had no more Staphylococcus aureus, but which was innoculated and dried before washing with detergent solution had lower reduction rate. The fabric washed with oxygen bleach did not have an antimicrobial effect, but rinsed with 0.07% fabric softener showed antimicrobial properties. The fabric rinsed with 0.7ppm colloidal silver solution had better antimicrobial effects. As the treating concentration of silver solution increased, the antimicrobial property of the fabric was increased. The fabric treated with 5% silver solution sustained reflectance and whiteness of untreated fabric. The colloidal silver treated fabric lost antimicrobial property after washing because nano-sized silver particles were located on uneven fiber surface without chemical bonding forces.
Wheat gluten-chitosan composite film (WGCCF) can prevent moisture migration and enhance the antimicrobial properties of gluten in intermediate-moisture foods like sandwiches. To mimic the structure of actual sandwich-type products we developed multi-layer food models, where moisture content and water activity differ. Water activity gradients direct moisture migration and therefore determine product characteristics and product stability. A 10% wheat gluten film-forming solution was mixed with chitosan film-forming solution (0-3%, w/w) and evaporated to generate WGCCF. Addition of 3% chitosan enhanced the mechanical properties of the film composite, lowered its water vapor permeability, and improved its ability to protect against both, Streptococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli, in a 24 hr sandwich test (reduction of 1.3 and 2.7 log cycles, respectively, compared to controls). Best barrier and antimicrobial performance was found for 3% chitosan WGCCF at pH 5.1. Film of this type may find application as barrier film for intermediate-moisture foods.
This study was carried out to elucidate the mode of bacteriostatic property of xanthostatin (XS), a novel depsipeptide antibiotic with an N-acetylglycine side chain and selective antimicrobial activity against Xanthomonas spp. Two biotransformed XSs were isolated by the treatment of XS with the cell lysate of Xanthomonas campestris pv. citri, a solvent partition, preparative TLC, and HPLC. Structure determination of those two biotransformed XSs demonstrated deletion of the N-acetylglycine side chain. Noteworthily, they showed no antimicrobial activity against Xanthomonas spp. This result suggests that the N-acetylglycine side chain plays a critical role in the antimicrobial activity of XS, and that the bacteriostatic property of XS is due to susceptibility of the ester bond between the hexadepsipeptide nucleus and the N-acetylglycine side chain to hydrolytic enzyme(s) produced by Xanthomonas spp.
Natural dyes seem to be more profitable on human and environment, and recently they could be considered as a better alternative to synthesized dyes. The aim of the current work was to investigate the dyeing property and antimicrobial activity of commercial cotton fabrics dyed with kumazasa (usually called in japan) which is known as conventional japan bamboo leaves. Actually, the dyeability and antimicrobial property of dyed fabric with natural mordant/dyeing was compared with synthetic mordant/dye process. The results of this study obtained are as follows. The apparently colour of kumazasa leaves extract dyed fabrics showed with light green or slightly yellow-green. In colorfastness to washing, ${\Delta}E$ and K/S values of dyed fabrics with natural chitosan as mordant used was shown to be more excellent results, than was synthetic mordant used. However, the decrease rate was recorded nearly 50% when washing repeated 20 cycles. In result of antimicrobial effect for bacteria, the dyed fabrics didn't show the significant antimicrobial activity to the both dyed with and without mordant. Results of this investigation considered that low-cost, natural, bio-mordant are relatively effective in natural coloration.
In vitro antimicrobial activities of hot water extracts of Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze, for carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) were compared to commonly used conventional antimicrobial agents. CRE was not only resistant to imipenem, meropenem or ertapenem, but also to various antimicrobial agents, such as amikacin (> $128{\mu}g/mL$). The hot water extracts of Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze had the lowest MIC ($0.06{\sim}0.5{\mu}L/mL$) of the carbapenem-resistant E. coli, K. pneumoniae, and Enterobacter spp. tested, and it was possible more potent than various conventional antimicrobial agents. Synergistic combinations of the extract with used commonly antimicrobial agents might even improve its antimicrobial chemotherapy property.
The dish cloth requires antimicrobial activity for hygienic purpose. Until now, organic antimicrobial agents of low cost have been frequently used for the anitimicrobial finishing. However, a cleaner hving anitimicroial activity should be more durable considering consumers' ever-increasing expectation. In this study, the cleaner containing the bamboo fiber were finished with a formulation of a new zirconium-containing inorganic agent of zirconium phosphate and polyurethane binders. The optimum treatment condition was investigated. And its durability against repeated laundering cycles was assessed. The existence of Zr after the repeated laundering was verified and the antimicrobial effect did not decrease under 30 washing cycles.
A bacterium strain called Bacillus coagulans was isolated from an industrial wastewater drainage and selected for its antimicrobial activities against bacteria and fungi. Characterization studies strongly suggested that this strain is Bacillus coagulans. Antimicrobial activity was found against gram-positive, gram-negative bacteria and yeast strain. Maximal activity was observed after 24 h when incubated at $30^{\circ}C$ and pH 8. The activity was found to be stable at $75^{\circ}C$ for 30 min and at pH range of 2-12. Analysis of the antimicrobial compound by SDS-PAGE suggested a molecular mass of approximately 7.5 KDa. The substance was characterized as a bacteriocin, because of its proteinaceous nature and low molecular weight. Our bacteriocin could potentially be used as a food preservative, because of its thermostable property and broad antimicrobial spectrum.
Sulfadiazine and silver sulfadiazine are well-known bactericidal agent routinely used clinical settings. Antimicrobial acid dyes were synthesized by introducing sulfadiazine or silver sulfadiazine and applied on nylon fabric. The Chemical Structure of the Synthesized dyes was identified by HPLC-mass. The dyeability of synthesized acid dyes for nylon fabric was similar to commercial acid dyes. Resistance to washing, rubbing and lightfastness were good. Nylon fabrics dyed with synthesized acid dyes had good antimicrobial properties. Durable antimicrobial properties after 20 times washing have shown good result that reduction ratio of colonies, is 99.9 %. Mixed dyeing were carried out using commercial acid dyes(leveling type) and synthesized dyes. The mixed dyeings have also shown good antimicrobial properties.
