  • A CJ9 bacterial strain, which showed antifungal and antibacterial activities, was isolated from meju and identified as Bacillus polyfermenticus based on Gram staining, biochemical properties, as well as its 16S rRNA sequence. B. polyfermenticus CJ9 showed the antimicrobial activity against the various pathogenic molds, yeasts, and bacteria. The antibacterial activity was stable in the pH 5.0~9.0, but the activity was lost at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hr. The antifungal activity was stable in the pH range of 3.0~9.0 and reduced at $121^{\circ}C$ for 15 min, but antifungal activity was not completely destroyed. The antibacterial activity was completely inactivated by proteinase K, protease, trypsin, and $\alpha$-chymotrypsin. The antifungal activity was also completely inactivated by protease and $\alpha$-chymotrypsin, and reduced its activity by proteinase which indicated that the antifungal and antibacterial compounds have proteineous nature. The apparent molecular mass of the partially purified antifungal compound, as indicated by using the direct detection method in Tricine-SDS-PAGE, was approximately 1.4 kDa. The molecular mass of the antibacterial compound could not be determined because of its heat-liable characteristic.

  • In the present study, the roots of Sesbania grandiflora L. Poiret (Papilionaceae) were successively extracted with petroleum ether (PE), chloroform (CE), methanol (ME) and water (AE) by soxhlet extraction. The extracts were vacuum dried and screened for analgesic, antidiarrhoeal, antibacterial (Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus, Bacillus cereus, and Klebsiella pneumonia) and antifungal (Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger) activity. All the extracts exhibited potent, dose dependant (40 and 80 mg/kg) and significant analgesic and antidiarrhoeal activity in the order of AE>PE>CE>ME and ME>PE>AE>CE respectively. AE at the experimental dose was found to exhibit more potent analgesic activity than standard drug. All the extracts exhibited significant antibacterial $(100\;{\mu}g/ml)$ and antifungal activity $(50\;and\;100\;{\mu}g/ml)$. ME exhibited the most potent antibacterial activity.

  • Several novel 1-[2-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl) ethyl]-1H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazoles (3a-h) have been synthesized by the condensation of 1-[2-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-ethyl]-1H-benzotriazole (2) and appropriate acid chlorides. 1-[2-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-ethyl]-1H-benzotriazole (2) was synthesized by reacting 3-(1H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazol-1-yl)propanenitrile with sodium azide and ammonium chloride in the presence of dimethylformamide. The synthesized compounds were characterized by IR and PMR analysis. The titled compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activity by the cup plate method and anticonvulsant activity evaluated by the maximal electroshock induced convulsion method in mice. All synthesized compounds exhibited moderate antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis and moderate antifungal activity against Candida albicans. Compounds 5-(2-(1 H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazo-1-yl)ethyl)-1H-tetrazol-1-yl)(4-aminophenyl)methanone 3d and 5-(2-(1 H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazo-1-yl)ethyl)-1H-tetrazol-1-yl)(2-aminophenyl)methanone 3e elicited excellent anticonvulsant activity.

  • In order to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of 2, 3-substituted-1, 4-naphthoquinone derivatives, we newly synthesized several 2-chloro, 2-bromo and 2-hydroxy-1, 4-naphthoquinones and subjected to antibacterial and antifungal activities, in vitro, against Escherichia coli NIHJ, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC6538p, Candida albicans 10231, Aspergillus niger 1231 and Tricophyton mentagrophytes 6085. Among these derivatives 3, 9, 18 and 23 showed the potent antibacterial activities. 18, 23 and 28 have the antifungal activities. However, these compounds have no significant hemolytic activity at concentrations higher than that required for showing the antibacterial and antifungal activities.

  • We have been experimenting for industrialize four kinds of wildflowers(Smilax china, Saururus chinensis, Houttuynia cordata and Zizania caduciflora) which are used for Korean medicinal plants for a long time as Korean resources plants. Smilax china, Saururus chinensis, Houttuynia cordata was used for roots and Zizania caduciflora used for leaves. Extraction was carried out in 50% ethyl alcohol, which was concentrated by freezing the material and then injected at a low concentration of 100ppm. The results of the study on the antibacterial potential activity and antifungal potential activity using the four wildflowers strains were as follows. 1. The results of the sterilization and antibacterial potential activity and antifungal potential activity were as follows. Houttuynia cordata showed good inhibitory effect for Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The inhibitory power of Zizania caduciflora was proved to some extent. However, other cultivars showed little antibacterial and antifungal activity. 2. The antifungal potential activity against Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Cryptococcus neoformans was small but some inhibition against Candida albicans was confirmed. There was no inhibition of other fungi potential at all.

  • Synthesis, structural characterization, and biological activity studies of novel pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidines (10a-h, 11a-h) are described. Cyclization of cynoacetamides (4, 5) with malonitrile (7) and aldehyde (6a-h) via Hantzsch pyridine synthesis afforded cyanopyridones (8a-h, 9a-h), which on cyclization with formic acid under microwave conditions led to the final product. All the reactions are significantly faster and the isolated yields are remarkably higher in microwave conditions compared to the conventionally heated reactions. The compounds were tested in vitro for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtillus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Micrococcus luteus and antifungal activity against Trichphyton longifusus, Candida albicans, Microsporum canis, Fusarium solani. Compounds 10b, 10e, 11b and 11e exhibited good antibacterial and antifungal activities compared with standards.

  • In the present study, the volatile oil, chloroform extract and methanol extract of the woods of the plants Cedrus deodara and Pinus roxburghii were screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Streptococcus pyogenes, Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, and Aspergillus clavatus using the Agar diffusion method. The susceptibilities of the microorganisms to the extracts were compared with each other and with a selected standard antibiotic. It was observed that the volatile oil and chloroform extracts showed the significant antibacterial activities while the least antibacterial activity was recorded with the methanolic extracts. The higher Minimum Inhibitory Concentration value of the extracts and oils against fungus suggested that the plants may possess less antifungal activity. Phytochemical analysis and thin-layer chromatography profiling revealed the presence of flavonoids and terpenoids in the oil and chloroform extracts, which could explain the antimicrobial activity. The findings suggest that the Cedrus deodara and Pinus roxburghii have antimicrobial properties and they can be used in the treatment of infectious diseases. However, further work is required in order to isolate the active constituents of the plants responsible for the antibacterial activity.

  • Antifungal agents are used to impart antibacterial or bactericidal properties to commodities and various articles used in industries and can be classified into two broad groups i.e organic and inorganic. Inorganic antifungal agents comprise of Ag, Zn, or Cu, etc. These elements tend to exhibit high level of antifungal activities, non-uniform dispersion in substrates, and have poor properties in expensive and cheap adhesiveness. In this study, the organic antifungal agent was used for the purpose of investigating the antifungal activity of antifungal agent activated-cement mortar (AACM) on the aspergilus niger of various fungus which can be easily discovered in the interiors and exteriors of buildings. In addition, an experiment on the basic physical properties of AACM such as compressive and flexural strength was carried out. The conclusion of this investigation revealed that a dosage increase of antifungal agent exhibits a high inhibitory effect on the aspergilus niger, and although there is a slight decrease in the strength of AACM, the strength of AACM was almost equal to that of inactivated cement mortar.
