The biological activities of fruits of Poncirus trifoliata have been studied. 70% Ethanol extract of Ponciri Fructus was fractionated with ether, ethyl acetate and n-butanol by turns. The ether fraction showed antibacterial activity on Staphylococcus aureus and inhibited the contractability of the isolated mice ileum. The ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions showed the anti-edematous effect on the carrageenin-induced edema of rat hindpaw. From the n-butanol fraction, one of the flavonoid glycoside was isolated and identified as poncirin. Ponciri Fructus contained about 6% poncirin which was 5,7-dihydroxy-4´-methoxy flavanone rhamnoglucoside and poncirin showed antiinflammatory activities. Poncirin was considered as the major effective component of Ponciri Fructus.

Wogonin(5,7-dihydroxy-8-methoxyflavone), an anti-inflammatory plant flavonoid, was previously demonstrated to modulate the several parameters of animal skin inflammation. This compound inhibited edematic response as well as proinflammatory gene expression. In this investigation, the histopathological changes of the lesions from different types of experimental skin inflammation were compared and the potential therapeutic effect of topically applied wogonin was evaluated. From the results, it was found that multiple TPA treatment drastically increased ear edema accompanied with epidermal hyperplasia and inflammatory cell infiltration, while phenol treatment provoked only edematic response in the dermal area. Wogonin somewhat differently inhibited these animal models of skin inflammation.

Local anesthetics are widely used in clinical dentistry. However, while rare, there have been some reports of true hypersensitivity to local anesthetics. A case of hypersensitivity in a 26-month-old boy is reported. After administering local anesthesia with lidocaine, treatment was performed while the patient was under oral sedation. After treatment, the patient presented with lower lip edema. Treatment with anti-histamines and a steroid successfully reversed his symptoms.

Prickly pear(Opuntia ficus-indica var saboten Makino, Cactaceae) is widely used as folk medicine for burned wound, edema and indigestion. To confirm the hypolipidemic action of the extract from Cactus stem and fruit in dietary hyperlipidemic rats, variations of the lipid- or cholesterol-related components were investigated. As results these changes were significantly prevented by treatments with Cactus extracts. The effects of the extract of fruit was better than those of stem.

In order to investigate experimentally the clinical effect of Soyangin-Hyongbangdojoksan (少陽人荊防導赤散) that was prescribed to cure the Bisuhanpyohanbyong (脾受寒表寒病) of Soyangin (少陽人). The author experimented various activities of dried extract from hyongbangdojoksan (Sample-I) and mixed extract of each dried extract of hyongbangdojoksan (Sample-II) by the methods prescribed in the experimental parts. The results summarized as follows. 1. In the acetic acid method experiment, analgesic effect was noted in sample-I & Sample-II. 2. Anti-inflammatory effect on the edema induced by carrageenin was noted in Sample-I. 3. Antipyretic effect is not noted in Sample-I and Sample-II. 4. On urinary volume change and blood electrolyte clearance, the result is not significant, on the contrary the urine electrolyte discharge is effective in Sample-I and Sample-II. According to the above results, the effects based on oriental medical references approximate to the actual experimental results.

In order to investigate experimentally the clinical effects. of $Tae{\breve{u}}min$ Chungpaesagan-Tang (太陰人 淸肺瀉肝湯) that was prescribed to cure the $Kansuy{\breve{o}}lriy{\breve{o}}lby{\breve{o}}ng$ (肝受熱裏熱病) of $Tae{\breve{u}}min$, the author experimented various activities of mixed extract from $Tae{\breve{u}}min$ Chungpaesagan-Tang by the methods prescribed in the experimental part. The results of the studies were summarized as follows; 1. In the acetic acid method experiment and the pressing hind paw method experiment, analgesic effects were noted. 2. The prolongation of the duration of hypnosis induced by Pen to barbital-sodium was noted. 3. Spontaneous movement of the isolated mice ileum was markedly suppressed. and Contraction to induced by acetylcholine, Barium chloride was Inhibited. 4. Antipyretic action by Thyphoid vaccine were noted in mice. 5. Significant anti-edemic effects were recognized on the edema induced by yeast. 6. Hypotensive action due to vaso-dilatating of normal rats and rabbits were noted.

The whole plants of Prunella vulgaris (Labiatae) and Thesium chinense (Santalaceae) are used as Hakocho(夏枯草) in the market in Korea. In oriental medicine, these herb drugs are prescribed as a diuretic or antiinflammatory drugs. In order to investigate the efficacy of the plants, the extracts were bioassayed for antiinflammatory action. The water extracts of Prunella Herba and Thesii Herba showed remarkable anti-carrageenin effect and significant inhibition of the swellings in adjuvant arthritis in rats. However, the extracts did not show any inhibition of leucocyte emigration in CMC pouch in rats.

The recombinant gamma-interferon (LBD-001) which was produced by yeast as host system was investigated on the pharmacological activities. This gamma-interferon exhibited potent inhibitory effect on adjuvant induced arthritis, but no effect on carrageenin induced paw edema in rats. It did not show any sedative, anticonvulsive, analgesic and hypothermic activities in animals. It also had no influences on isolated tracheal muscle and ileum of guinea pig, isolated uterus and fundus strip of rats, and on blood pressure and respiration in situ experiments of rabbits.

Cinnamic acid derivatives(CAD) originating from vegetable kingdom have some biological activity. Effect of CAD on reversed cutaneous anaphylaxis (RCA) and hemolysin (HY) titer were studied in rats. Experiments were carried out to determine RCA as the skin edema induced at 2 hours after injection of 0.05 $m\ell$/site of anti-rat serum rabbit serum. Drugs were orally administered at one hour before antigen challenge. (omitted)
