  • As the latter part of the research on the high school girls\` body shapes, this study aimed to classify high school girls\` lateral body shapes and by combining the result with that of the authors\` precedent study on the classification of their frontal body shapes, to classify the whole body shapes into presentative clusters. Subjects consisted of 205 high school girls in Kwangju aged 16 through 18 years. 55 anthropometric and 29 photographic measurements were taken from each subject. For more effective data analysis, these measurements were tansformed into some calculated indexes. These indexes were reduced to 8 factors and these factors classified the lateral body shapes into 3 clusters. The compound types of the whole body shapes resulting from frontal and lateral body shape analysis resulted in 9 representative cody types.

  • The objectives of this study are to investigate the measurements of clothing for the handicapped compared to that of the normal, and to present the basic data to make clothing for the handicapped who has specific needs. Questionnaires were administered to 927 Cerebral Palsies on height, weight, chest circumference, sitting height, and to 70 handicapped people using a supporting parasite on 18 measurement items. The results show that height, weight , and sitting height of the handicapped are smaller than those of the normal of equal age except for chest circumference. And, the values of the items for the lower half are smaller than the normal of equal age and those for the upper half, especially the items for the shoulder and arm, are greater. Compared to the values of the normal in the three standad size charts, the size charts using height and chest circumference are unsuitable to the handicapped, and the size chart using hip circumference is approximately suitable.

  • It is improtant to get accurate information about the grip strength for designing ergonomic grips and handles. It has been known that the excessive and repetitive use of grip force and unnatural posture of the wrist may cause cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tendrome, tendonitis, DeQuervan's disease, etc. In this paper we have measured the grip strength for sitting and standing posture for Korean adults ; 114 males and 105 females aged from the 20's to above the 50's. And this paper performed statistical analysis for deriving characteristics between grip strength and anthropometric data. The results are as follows ; (1) The maximum grip strength posture is exerted under standing posture with the elbow in full extension (180 .deg. ) for both males and females (2) There is significant difference among posture, sex and right and/or left handedness (3) Grip strength decreases with age for male, but it traces an inverted U curve for female (4) Grip strength has corre- lations with the age, weight, height, BSA, forearm length, hand length, thickness of wrist, circumference of wrist, and breadth of wrist for males.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide for some basic data useful to production of the apparels fit and measured well for the Chinese men. For this Purpose, Chinese adult men's body types and their changes over time which had been surveyed by preceding studies were compared by age group with those of Korean adult men which had been published in a report on National Anthropometric Survey of Korea in 1997 The results of this study can be summarized as follows; 1. As a result of comparatively analyzing the differences of body types between Chinese and Korean adult men, Chinese men have higher stature and arms, while weighing more. 2. As a result of comparatively analyzing the differences of body types between Chinese and Korean adult men by age group, it was found that the changes of body types due to aging are similar between two groups. Namely, as they become older, their vertical sizes become smaller, while their horizontal sizes become larger gradually.

  • This paper is concerned with the comparison and chronological changes of the physical constitution of the Korean youth, age range 6-17. For the purpose, anthropometric data of schoolchildrens are surveyed from the Statistlcal Yearbook of Education published in Ministry of Education. The results show that body dimensions have increased consistently from 1964 to 1994. During the last 30years, stature has increased by about 1cm to 6cm per decade, on the average, and body weight has increased by about 1kg to 5kg per decade. On the other hand, silting height and chest circumference have increased by about 0.5cm to 3cm per decade. The results also show that there are significant sex differences in the characteristics of physical growth. These findings identified in this study mean that boys and girls have essentially different requirements for the design of the workplace.

  • Organized feeding programmes can contribute to the health and well-being of students All such programme must be planned carefully, taking into account the nutritional needs of the group to be fed, available food supplies, facilities for food preparation and distribution, and available funds. In most instances provision must be made for training staff to operate large-scale feeding proframmes. Nutrition education should be an important aspect of all feeding programme, and should provide simple clear information on food and nutrition in relation to health. The early participation of parents and the local community in the programme, particularly through the production of local low-cost foods of high nutritional value will help to insure continuity after external aid has ceased. Programmes should be evaluated in order to measure the benefits obtained in relation to the cost of the operation. Anthropometric data, absenteeism and scholastic achievement may serve as indicators in school feeding programmes.

  • We Propose an improved shovel design to minimize physical discomfort and the risk of cumulative trauma disorder at shoveling tasks. The specifications of shovels in Korean standard data were scrutinized to check if they met the anthropometric specification of Korean population in 1997. We also applied "Body Map" pictograph and self-conscious checklist to field survey to analyze the discomfort of shoveling task. Thirty male subjects whose age were ranging from 18 to 65 voluntarily participated in the experiment. The measurement results show that shoveling workers were exposed to hazards of CTD's. Especially, when workers were involved in ditch digging and construction their trunk vend more than 120 degree. In order to compare the new designed shovel and the traditional K.S shovel, an analysis of variance was performed and we obtained very strong evidence that the new designed shovel was better in reducing physical discomfort. According to the results from electromyograrn experiment the new shovel contributed to improving subjective comfort level and reducing low back muscle fatigue. For futher study, the research may be extended to determine the relationship among shovel sharpness, type, digging motion and digging force.ing force.

  • The objectives of this study were: (a) to find the maximum ac- ceptable weight which can be carried for 8 hours using a psycho- physical method for front, side (one hand and two hands) and back carrying, and (b) to develop models which could predict the ac- ceptable maximum weight in carrying using isometric strength and anthropometric data. A series of laboratory experiments were conducted to find the maximum acceptable weight in front side and back carrying. Six college students participated in the experiment. It was found that subjects were willing to carry the heaviest load using two-hand side carrying (average maximum acceptable weight: 7.76 kg). Back carrying was the close second with 6.62 kg. Also, there was a significant difference (p< 0.01) in maximum acceptable weight for carrying between one-hand (4.40kg) and two-hand side carrying.

  • When designing workplaces, controls should be placed within the reach of operator's arm or foot to guarantee effective performance. The aviation industry is perhaps the chief user of anthropometric data for its need to weight minimization and space optimization. In designing a workplace which must cater to a wide range of operator size, it might be sufficient to plan only for the 'average person'. Static arm reach measurements which are taken in conventional, standardized positions provide the necessary information, but they cannot be directly applied to dynamic situations. In this research, an approximate algorithm to generate the workspace of the human body including foot reach and trunk motion is proposed and tested. The robot kinematics was employed to represent the human body as a multi-link system.
