  • In this paper, we propose a controller gain based on model based design and implement the two-wheel inverted pendulum type robot using NXT Lego and RobotC language. Two-wheel inverted pendulum robot consists of NXT mindstorm, servo DC motor with encoder, gyro sensor, and accelerometer sensor. We measurement wheel angle using bulit-in encoder and calculate wheel angle speed using moving average method. Gyro measures body angular velocity and accelerometer measures body pitch angle. We calculate body angle with complementary filter using gyro and accelerometer sensor. The control gain is a weighted value for wheel angle, wheel angular velocity, body pitch angle, and body pich angular velocity, respectively. We experiment and observe the effect of two-wheel inverted pendulum with respect to change of control gains.

  • Characteristics of various material surface plasmon resonance (SPR) chips were investigated in angular interrogation mode and intensity interrogation mode. Among five metals, silver (Ag), gold (Au), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr) and titanium (Ti), three metals, Ag, Au and Cu were paid attention to since their characteristics can be easily analyzed in angular interrogation mode by investigating the change of their reflectance curves according to refractive index change from 1.331 to 1.335. Most of SPR chips with various configurations showed the similar property in angular interrogation mode. The application of the SPR chip made of Ag, Au and Cu or their combinations depends on their reflectance properties. In intensity interrogation mode, the operation range may be limited since the variation of the intensity was not linearly related to refractive index change ranging from 1.331 to 1.335. However, the SPR chip containing high ratio of Ag may be applicable to high sensitive detection due to their sharp reflectance curves in intensity interrogation mode.

  • In this paper a novel method for angular position determination using sensors with sin/cos output and without an excitation signal, is presented. The linearization of the sensor transfer characteristic and digitalization of the measurement results are performed simultaneously with a goal to increase the measurement resolution. This improvement is particularly important for low angular velocities, and can be used to increase the resolution of incremental Hall, magnetic and optical sensors. This method includes two phases of sin/cos signal linearization. In the first linearization phase the pseudo-linear signal is generated. The second linearization phase, executed by the two-stage piecewise linear ADC, is an additional linearization of the pseudo-linear signal. Based on the LabVIEW software simulations of the proposed method, the contribution of each processing phase to a final measurement error is examined. After the proposed method is applied within $2{\pi}$ [rad] range, the maximal nonlinearity is reduced from 0.3307 [rad] ($18.9447^{\circ}$) to $3{\cdot}10^{-4}$ [rad] ($0.0172^{\circ}$).

  • We developed multimedia esophageal catheters for use with birds to measure and record ECG and angular velocity while anesthesized, at rest, and in flight. These catheters enable estimates of blood pressure based on readings given by an angular velocity sensor and by RR intervals of ECG affected by EMG. In our experiments, the catheters had the following characteristics: 1. Esophageal catheters offer a topological advantage with 8-dB SNR improvement due to elimination of electromyography (EMG). 2. We observed a very strong correlation between blood pressure and the angular velocity of esophageal catheter axial rotation. 3. The impulse conduction pathway (Purkinje fibers) of the cardiac ventricle has a direction opposite to that of the mammalian pathway. 4. Sympathetic nerves predominate in flight, and RR interval variations are strongly suppressed. The electrophysiological data obtained by this study provided especially the state of the avian autonomic nervous system activity, so we can suspect individual's health condition. If the change of the RR interval was small, we can perform an isolation or screening from the group that prevent the pandemics of avian influenza. This catheter shall be useful to analysis an avian autonomic system, to perform a screening, and to make a positive policy against the massive infected avian influenza.

  • In this paper, measuring system of 5 DOF motion errors are proposed using two capacitive type sensor, a straight edge and a laser interfoerometer. Yawing error and pitching error are measured using the laser interferometer, and rolling error is measured by the reversal method using a capacitive type sensor. Linear motion errors of horizontal and vertical direction are measured using the sequential two point method. In this case, influence of angular motion errors is compensated using the previously measured angular motion errors. In the horizontal direction, measuring accuracy is within 0.05 $\mu$m and 0.27 arcsec, and in the vertical direction, it is within 0.15 $\mu$m and 0.5 arcsec. From these results, it is confirmed that the proposed measureing system is very effective to the measurement of 5 DOF motion errors in the ultra precision feed tables.

  • The ARS(Attitude Reference System) calculates an attitude of a vehicle using inertial angular rate sensors and acceleration sensors. The attitude error of ARS increases due to the integration of angular rate sensor output. To reduce the attitude error an acceleration of sensor is used similar to leveling method of INS(Inertial Navigation System). When an acceleration of vehicle is increased, it is difficult to calculate the attitude error using acceleration sensor output. In this paper the estimation method of acceleration due to the attitude error only is proposed. Two methods of the attitude calculation depending on vehicle dynamics and the integration method of these two methods are proposed. To verify its performance the monte carlo simulation is performed and shows that it bounds attitude error of ARS to reasonable level.

  • This paper aims to provide a way to improve dynamic stability of biped robots against undesirable disturbances and in a slope. By using an angular velocity sensor and an acceleration sensor on its waist, we can make a medium-sized biped robot walk stably in a slope against impulsive disturbances. In addition, it is possible for the robot to walk stably in an unknown slope. The measured signals from the sensor are used for compensating the reference angles of ankle, knee, and pelvis joints. Some experiments show that the stability of the robot is much enhanced by using cheat sensors and a simple algorithm. This work helps bided robots walk more stably in real environments.

  • A new design of cylindrical capacitive sensor(CCS) for the displacement measurement of precision active magnetic bearing(AMB) spindle is presented in this paper. This research is motivated by the problem that existing 4-segment CCS is still sensitive to the $3^{rd}$ harmonic component of the geometric errors of a rotor. The procedure of designing new CCS starts from the modeling and error analysis of CCS. The angular size of CCS is set up as a design parameter, and new 8-segment CCS is introduced to possess an arbitrary angular size. The optimum geometry of CCS to minimize the effect of geometric errors is determined through minimum norm approach. Experimental results with test rotors have confirmed the improvement in geometric error suppression.

  • In this study, we developed a falling recognition system to transmit SMS data through CDMA communication using a three axises acceleration sensor and a two axises gyro sensor. 5 healthy men were selected into a control group, and the fall recognition system using the three axises acceleration sensor and the two axises gyro sensor was devised to conduct an experiment. The system was attached to the upper of their sternum. According to the experiment protocol, the experiment was carried out 3 times repeatedly divided into 3 specific protocols: falling during gait, falling in stopped state, and falling in everyday life. Data obtained in the falling recognition system and LabVIEW 8.5 were used to decide if falling corresponds to that regulated in an analysis program applying an algorithm proposed in this study. In addition, results from falling recognition were transmitted to designated cellular phone in a SMS (Shot Message Service) form. These research results show that an erroneous detection rate of falling reached 19% in applying an acceleration signal only; 6% in applying an angular velocity; and 2% in applying a proposed algorithm. Such finding suggests that an erroneous detection rate of falling is improved when the proposed algorithm is applied incorporated with acceleration and angular velocity. In this study therefore, we proposed that a falling recognition system implemented in this study can make a contribution to the recognition of falling of the aged or the disabled.

  • In this paper we dicuss the dither-stripping methods by V-F(voltage to frequency) conversion of the output of angular velocity sensor which is for detecting the dither motion of the ring laser cavity. In this case, it is very important to evaluate the pulse-to-pulse scale factor between the ring lase output pulse and V-F output pulse, and also to compensate the zero offset of the V-F output pulse. In the case of the dither-stripping by the V-F conversion of angular velocity sensor output, there is a big angle uncertainty in the process of compensating the zero offset due to the dither noise for compensating the V-F output. By differential, the phase of the V-F output is changed. So, to compensate it, we change 90deg of the phase of angular velocity sensor output and delay half sampling time of the phase of ring laser output in advance. In this case the pulse-to-pulse scale factor can be evaluated by the standard deviation of each pulse. We can get the good result of the dither-stripping output by this angle differential method.
