Thermal Effect on the Vibration Characteristics of Pretwisted Rotating Blade (열 효과를 고려한 비틀림이 있는 회전 블레이드의 진동 특성)

  • Vibration analysis of rotating blade is the main purpose of this study. In the present work, general formulation is proposed to analyze the rotating shell-type structures including the effect of centrifugal force, Coriolis acceleration and initial twist. Furthermore, simplified equations are derived for the case of an open circular cylindrical shell. Based on the concept of degenerated shell element with the Reissner-Mindlin's assumptions, the finite element method is adopted for solving the governing equations. In addition, it is investigated the effect of thermal load on the vibration characteristics of pretwisted blade. Numerical results are summarized for the various parameters such as rotating speed, angle of pretwist and stacking sequence of a composite blade. Also, present results are compared with the previous works and experimental data.

Study on orientation distribution of discotic liquid crystal in compensating film for viewing angle improvement of liquid crystal displays

  • The discotic liquid crystal in compensating film used for the viewing angle improvement of the twist nematic liquid crystal display panel is analyzed. For the optical characterization of the compensating film, we measured the polarization state of the light passing through the film as the tilt angle and the azimuth angle of the film were varied, and then we compared the measured polarization state with the calculated one. Finally we suggested the best fit configuration of the discotic liquid crystal.

  • A liquid crystal device with switchable dynamic and memory modes was investigated and developed. The proposed device reveals the splay, $\pi$-twist, and bend states via selective switching among them. In the dynamic mode, the device is operated in the bend state, which exhibits a wide viewing-angle and a fast-response-time due to its self-compensated bend structure and flow-accelerated fast response time, respectively. In the memory mode, the permanent memory characteristics in the splay and $\pi$-twist sates are obtained, respectively. The switching mechanisms of the tristate device are also proposed.

  • The liquid crystal device with switchable dynamic mode and memory mode has been investigated and developed. The proposed device reveals splay, ${\pi}$ twist and bend states by selective switching among them. In the dynamic mode, this device is operated in the bend state which exhibits the wide view angle and fast response time properties due to the self-compensated bend structure and flow accelerated fast response time. Three-dimensional Kinematic Analysis of the Yurchenko Layout with 360-degree Twist in Female Vaults: Deterministic Model and Judges' Scores

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify kinematic variables that govern successful performance and judges' scores and to establish correlative relationships among those of Yurchenko layout with a full twist in female vaults. Method: Four video cameras with sampling rate of 60 Hz collected 32 motion data of Yurchenko vaults from twenty-two female participants (age: $18.6{\pm}3.6years$, height: $153.0{\pm}6.5cm$, mass: $44.7{\pm}7.3kg$) during national competition. Posting processing and calculations of kinematic variables were performed in Kwon 3D XP and $Matlab^{(R)}$ programs. Correlation and regression analyses were applied to find the relationships between the obtained scores and kinematic variables. Deterministic model (Hay & Reid, 1988) was used to investigate the strength of correlative relationships among kinematic variables. Results: The obtained scores from the judges' decision were mainly affected by post-flight peak height, horse contact time, knee angle at landing, and horse takeoff angle. Strong blocking during horse contact was required to get successful performance and obtain high scores. Modified deterministic model showed that round-off entrance and takeoff angles and resultant velocity of the center of mass (CM) during the roundoff phase were the starting variables affecting performance in the following kinematics. Knee angle at landing, a highly influential variable on the obtained point, was only determined by judges' decision without significant correlative relationship with previous kinematic variables. Conclusion: The obtained scores highly depended on kinematic variables of post-flight and horse contact phases that were affected by those from the previous phases including round-off postures and resultant velocity of the body center of mass.

  • The aim of this study is to find the best cutting conditions as analyzing cutting process of paper shredder and shape of cutter. The test has been done variation of torque and cutting velocity according to load. When shape of cutter and distance between cutter and shaft are changed, The variation of cutting force according to cutting angle and load is geometrically analyzed. The result of geometrical analysis is presented that the radius and array of cutter is the method to improve torque of paper shredder. In this paper it is presented as basic method of design to improve cutting performance of paper shredder.

  • We have studied the influence of rubbing directions on electro-optic characteristics of the fringe field driven hybrid aligned nematic liquid crystal (LC) cell by computer simulation. When a LC with positive dielectric anisotropy is used, the results show that the driving voltage and transmittance decreases as the rubbing direction with respect to horizontal electric field direction increases. The reason for decrease in light transmission is the reduction of twist angle and increase of tilt angle on the center of common electrode. In this paper, we have studied how the rubbing angle effects on the transmittance of the cell by investigating a distribution of electric field and LC director.

Landau Level Spectra in a Twisted Bilayer Graphene

  • We investigate Landau level spectra of twisted bilayer graphene under a perpendicular magnetic field, showing that the layers provide rich electronic structure depending on misoriented angle. New types of excitations with Landau level sequences due to the reflection of interlayer coupling level are matter of interest in the present work. We calculate the electronic structure of bilayer systems with a relative small angle rotation of the two graphene layers. Calculated Landau level spectra for twisted bilayer graphene using a continuum formulation are in good agreement with existing experimental and theoretical studies. Twist angle dependent numerical simulations provide significant insights for the nature of the Landau level spectra in bilayer graphene, combining signals from both massive and massless Dirac fermions. We finally discuss the influence of the graphene layers in the experimental sample that related to the magneto-transport measurements including quantum Hall conductance.

  • Tapping is one of the most widely used machining operations. There are several methodes of producing external screw threads, e.g. turning, milling with single or multiple cutter, rolling, and grinding, but the methods available for cutting enternal threads are less numerous, and for threads in small holes, tapping is employed almost exclusively. In this study, the tap with the various geometry has been developed in order to tap special workmaterial at considerably higher cutting speed than that of the conventional HSS tap. The experimental tests are run with various cutting speed by using a piezo type tool dynamometer to measure tapping torque. Tapping torque is affected by the design of the tap, which seems to be due to internal friction and shearing of the metal. It is clarified that the process of chip formation strongly depends on rake angle, relief angle, angle of twist.

  • We have studied electro-optic characteristics of transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) using in-plane switching mode. Unlike previous transflective LCD using a dual gap structure and multi driving circuit, this transflective LCD has a single gap structure and a single driving circuit. In the voltage on state, the electric field is applied horizontally to the LC directors, and then homogeneously aligned LC directors at initial state is rotated to with the electric field. But the twist angle of the LC directors in reflective area is lower than transmissive area. As a result, it is possible to design the transflective LCD with a single gap and a single driving circuit. The transflective display associated with this LC cell exhibits a wide viewing angle in both reflective and transmissive areas.
