  • This work presents a theoretical study on the analytical calculation of the lineshape of polarization spectroscopy (PS) for the transition line $5s^2\;^1S_0{\rightarrow}5s5p\;^1P_1$ of $^{88}Sr$. From the obtained analytical form of the PS spectrum, we were able to identify how the saturation affected the lineshape of the PS spectrum. The results obtained will be useful for polarization spectroscopy experiments using the alkaline-earth atoms such as Sr or Yb.

  • In this paper, an analytical and experimental study was performed in order to determine the effects of interaction between vehicle and structure. Results presented in the paper show that analytical method including moving load effect can investigate the trend of structural response due to dynamic interaction between vehicle and structure. The wheel tracking machine fitted with 2-axle test vehicle can demonstrate more accurate dynamic interaction between vehicle and structure than the wheel tracking machine fitted without 2-axle test vehicle.

  • This letter presents an analytical framework for a performance analysis of the imperfect direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) closed-loop power control (CLPC) loop with loop delay, channel estimation error, and power control command bit error as the parameters under a Rayleigh flat fading environment. The proposed model is verified through a comparison between analytical results and simulation ones.

  • The design methods for the steel plate strengthened RC structures are not well established yet because the structural behavior of plated RC beams is more complex than that of regular unplated ones. The main purpose of this paper is to present the premature failure mechanism of steel plate strengthened RC beams. The analytical models of interfacial stress and normal are also proposed in this paper. The comparisons between the analytical results using the proposed theory and experimental ones relatively satisfied.

  • This study has been conducted to predict the ultimate moment capacities of double angle connections with various angle thicknesses and bolt gage distances. Considering the results of experimental tests conducted previously, a simplified analytical model is suggested in this research. In addition, some basic data are also provided for structural engineers to design a double angle connection preliminary.

Estimation of elevated tanks natural period considering fluid- structure- soil interaction by using new approaches

  • The analytical method is used to develop new models for an elevated tank to estimate its natural period. The equivalent mass- spring method is used to configure the developed analytical models. Also direct method is used for numerical verification. The current study shows that developed models can have a good estimation of natural period compared with concluded results of finite elements. Additional results show that, the dependency of impulsive period to soil stiffness condition is higher than convective period. Furthermore results show that considering the fluid- structure- soil interaction has remarkable effects on natural impulsive and convective periods in case of hard to very soft soil.

A displacement controlled method for evaluating ground settlement induced by excavation in clay

  • Excavation usually induces considerable ground settlement in soft ground, which may result in damage of adjacent buildings. Generally, the settlement is predicted through elastic-plastic finite element method and empirical method with defects. In this paper, an analytical solution for predicting ground settlement induced by excavation is developed based on the definition of three basic modes of wall displacement: T mode, R mode and P model. A separation variable method is employed to solve the problem based on elastic theory. The solution is validated by comparing the results from the analytical method with the results from finite element method(FEM) and existing measured data. Good agreement is obtained. The results show that T mode and R mode will result in a downward-sloping ground settlement profile. The P mode will result in a concave-type ground settlement profile.

Analytical simulation of reversed cyclic lateral behaviors of an RC shear wall sub-assemblage

  • Experimental results of cyclic reversed lateral force test on a two-story reinforced concrete shear wall sub-assemblage are simulated analytically by using the PERFORM-3D program. A comparison of experimental and analytical results leads to the following conclusions: (1) "Shear Wall" and "General Wall" models with "Concrete shear" cannot simulate the pinching phenomena due to shear and show larger amounts of inelastic energy absorption than those in the experiment. (2) Modeling a story-height wall by using two or more "General Wall" elements with "Diagonal shear" in the vertical direction induces the phenomenon of swelling-out at the belly, leading to the erroneous simulation of shear behaviors. In application to tall building structures, it is recommended to use one element of "General Wall" with "Diagonal shear" for the full height of a story. (3) In the plastic hinge area, concrete deformations of analytical models overestimate elongation and underestimate shortening when compared with experimental results.

Experimental and analytical investigations on seismic behavior of ductile steel knee braced frames

  • Knee Braced Frame (KBF) is a special form of ductile eccentrically braced frame having a diagonal brace connected to a knee element, as a hysteretic damper, instead of beam-column joint. This paper first presents an experimental investigation on cyclic performance of two knee braced single span one-story frame specimens. The general test arrangement, specimen details, and most relevant results (failure modes and hysteretic curves) are explained. Some indexes to assess the seismic performance of KBFs, including ductility; response reduction factor and energy dissipation capabilities are also subsequently discussed. Experimental results indicate that the maximum equivalent damping ratios achieved by test frames are 21.8 and 23% for the specimens, prior to failure. Finally, a simplified analytical model is derived to predict the bilinear behavior of the KBFs. Acceptable conformity between analytical and experimental results proves the accuracy of the proposed model.
