In this paper, a finite element with embedded displacement discontinuity which eliminates the need for remeshing of elements in the discrete crack approach is applied for the progressive fracture analysis of concrete structures. A finite element formulation is implemented with the extension of the principle of virtual work to a continuum which contains internal displacement discontinuity. By introducing a discontinuous displacement shape function into the finite element formulation, the displacement discontinuity is obtained within an element. By applying either a nonlinear or an idealized linear softening curve representing the fracture process zone (FPZ) of concrete as a constitutive equation to the displacement discontinuity, progressive fracture analysis of concrete structures is performed. In this analysis, localized progressive fracture simultaneous with crack closure in concrete structures under mixed mode loading is simulated by adopting the unloading path in the softening curve. Several examples demonstrate the capability of the analytical technique for the progressive fracture analysis of concrete structures.

Highly functional mill turrets have been developed and continuously improved to shorten the manufacturing time and enable multiple uses. Among these, a mill turret with B-axis rotary table was developed. The B-axis rotary table should be evaluated for structural integrity. Moreover, its worm and worm gear for transmitting power should be able to endure fatigue damage. Therefore, this article presents a structural analysis of this type of B-axis rotary table and confirms its static stability by comparing the stress results to the allowable stress levels. Next, the dynamic stability of the rotary table was investigated via a mode analysis and a harmonic analysis in a range determined by the results of a modal analysis. Finally, a worm gear set, the main part that drives the rotary table, is analyzed for fatigue and to estimate its lifetime. The results of the fatigue analysis allowed a prediction of the life of the worm gear set. The analytical results show that the B-axis rotary table has good structural integrity.

Simple 3, 10, and 30-story buildings with a nonstructural element which is located at roof or near the middle of the building height are selected. Based on 2009 Korean Building Code, the seismic design force applied at the nonstructural element is evaluated. Response spectrum analysis is conducted with the design response acceleration spectrum of 2009 Korean Building Code and the analytical response is compared with the seismic design force from the Code. Furthermore, an artificial earthquake based on Korean design response acceleration spectrum and the 50% intensity of El Centro earthquake, which can be considered as the maximum future earthquake possibly occurring in Korea, are selected to conduct time history analysis. When the period of the nonstructural element is shorter than 0.06 second or longer than that of the 1st period of each building, the Code equations of seismic design force for nonstructural element seems to be appropriate. However, the period of the nonstructural element is close to the one of the building's higher mode periods including the 1st period, seismic force of the nonstructural element might exceed the Code specified seismic design force.
In this paper, a simplified seismic design method for low-rise dual frame-steel plate shear wall (SPSW) structures is proposed in the framework of performance-based seismic design. The dynamic response of a low-rise structure is mainly dominated by the first-mode and the structural system can be simplified to an equivalent single degree-of-freedom (SDOF) oscillator. The dual frame-SPSW structure was decomposed into a frame system and a SPSW system and they were simplified to an equivalent F-SDOF (SDOF for frame) oscillator and an equivalent S-SDOF (SDOF for SPSW) oscillator, respectively. The analytical models of F-SDOF and S-SDOF oscillators were constructed based on the OpenSees platform. The equivalent SDOF oscillator (D-SDOF, dual SDOF) for the frame-SPSW system was developed by combining the F-SDOF and S-SDOF oscillators in parallel. By employing the lateral force resistance coefficients and seismic demands of D-SDOF oscillator, the design approach of SPSW systems was developed. A 7-story frame-SPSW system was adopted to verify the feasibility and demonstrate the design process of the simplified method. The results also show the seismic demands derived by the equivalent dual SDOF oscillator have a good consistence with that by the frame-SPSW structure.

The purpose of this work was to assess and quantify the beneficial effects of long-term gas exchange, at varying frequencies, for the development of a vibrating intravascular lung assistance device (VIVLAD), for patients suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The experimental design and procedure have been applied to the construction of a new device for assessing the effectiveness of membrane vibrations. An analytical solution has been developed for the hydrodynamics of flow through a bundle of sinusoidally vibrated hollow fibers, with the intention of gaining insight into how wall vibrations might enhance the performance of the VIVLAD. As a result, the maximum oxygen transfer rate was reached at the maximum amplitude and through the transfer of vibrations to the hollow fiber membranes. The device was excited by a frequency band of 7Hz at various water flow rates, as this frequency was the 2nd mode resonance frequency of the flexible beam. 675 hollow fiber membranes were also bundled, within the blood flow, into the device.

Food is a common source of chromium (Cr) exposure. However, it is difficult to analyze Cr in complex food matrices by using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) because the major isotope, $^{52}Cr$, is masked by interference generated by the sample matrix and the plasma gas. Among the systems available to minimize interference, the recently developed collision-reaction interface (CRI) has a different structure relative to that of other systems (e.g., collision cell technology, octopole reaction system, and dynamic reaction cell) that were designed as a chamber between the skimmer cone and quadrupole. The CRI system introduces collision or reaction gas directly into the plasma region through a modified hole of skimmer cone. We evaluated the use of an CRI ICP-MS system to minimize polyatomic interference of $^{52}Cr$ and $^{53}Cr$ in various foodstuffs. The $^{52}Cr$ concentrations measured in the standard mode were 2-3 times higher than the certified values. This analytical method based on an ICP-MS system equipped with a CRI of helium gas was effective for Cr analysis in complex food matrices.

In this paper, the stress intensity factor, energy release rate and crack opening displacement are computed using the finite element method for axisymmetric viscoelastic cylinders with the penny-shaped and circumferential cracks. The triangular elements with quarter point nodes are used to describe the stress singularity around the crack edge. The analytical solutions are also derived by using the elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle and compared with the numerical results to show the validity and accuracy of the presented method. Viscoelastic materials are assumed to behave elastically in dilatation and like a three-parameter standard linear solid.

Longitudinal transmission-line modal theory is applied to analyze the guiding mode characteristics along 1D & 2D grating patterns of plasmonic grating-assisted directional couplers (P-GADC) based on silicon waveguide. By defining supermodes amenable to rigorous analytical solutions and interference between even and odd modes, the field distributions of TE modes for each grating patterns are evaluated. The numerical result reveals that the field distribution with maximum coupling efficiency occurs at P-GADC composed by square grating pattern. That is, it reveals at a minium gap condition of grating period $d_{min}=8.8{\mu}m$ different from conventional phase-matching condition of GADC.
In this paper, the thermal effect on buckling and free vibration characteristics of functionally graded (FG) size-dependent Timoshenko nanobeams subjected to an in-plane thermal loading are investigated by presenting a Navier type solution for the first time. Material properties of FG nanobeam are supposed to vary continuously along the thickness according to the power-law form and the material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent. The small scale effect is taken into consideration based on nonlocal elasticity theory of Eringen. The nonlocal equations of motion are derived based on Timoshenko beam theory through Hamilton's principle and they are solved applying analytical solution. According to the numerical results, it is revealed that the proposed modeling can provide accurate frequency results of the FG nanobeams as compared to some cases in the literature. The detailed mathematical derivations are presented and numerical investigations are performed while the emphasis is placed on investigating the effect of the several parameters such as thermal effect, material distribution profile, small scale effects, aspect ratio and mode number on the critical buckling temperature and normalized natural frequencies of the temperature-dependent FG nanobeams in detail. It is explicitly shown that the thermal buckling and vibration behaviour of a FG nanobeams is significantly influenced by these effects. Numerical results are presented to serve as benchmarks for future analyses of FG nanobeams.
A main goal of this study is to propose a damage detection technique to detect and localize damages of a top-tensioned riser. In this paper, the top-tensioned finite element (FE) model is considered as an analytical model of the riser, and a vibration-based damage detection method is proposed. The present method consists of a FE model updating and damage index method. In order to accomplish the goal of this study, first, a sensitivity-based FE model updating method using natural frequencies and zero frequencies is introduced. Second, natural frequencies and zero frequencies of the axial mode on the top-tensioned riser are estimated by eigenvalue analysis. Finally, the locations and severities of the damages are estimated from the damage index method. Three numerical examples are considered to verify the performance of the proposed method.
