  • The structural behavior of welded steel box columns subjected to axial compression and combined load of axial and horizontal load is described. The nonlinear stress-strain relation of the material and residual stress resulted from welds were included in the analysis. Inelastic buckling analysis of hollow rectangular sections of various width-thickness and slenderness ratios was carried out using the semi-analytical and spline finite strip method to investigate the local and global bucking stress and mode interaction. The buckling stress was compared with test results and design curves. Post-buckling behavior was traced by the finite element program(ADINA) and compared with experimental results. The comparison showed that the ultimate stress can be used for the design purpose.

  • The loading condition, of a ship, especially a multi-purpose cargo carrier, in service, is often changed. Then, the prediction of natural frequency changes is necessary to provide measures for prevention of ship vibrations. In this paper a simplified method for the above purpose is presented. The bases of the method are analytical solutions for the lateral vibrations of uniform Timoshenko beams carrying a concentrated mass and the Dunkerley's formula. In this method a ship in the standard ballast condition is reduced to a uniform Timoshenko beam having same system parameters as those of the midship section. To investigate the validity of the proposed method, numerical calculations are carried out for a 46,000 DWT bulk carrier and compared with detailed calculations based on the finite difference method. Even in cases those the cargoes in a hold, length of which is about 13% of the ship's length, are reduced to a concentrated mass, the proposed method gives results of several percent differences from the detailed calculations up to the six-noded mode.

  • The nonlinear analysis was perforned for a 2-bay 2-story moment-resisting reinforced concrete plane frame with seismic detail using KDARC 2D program. The analytical models consist of the material model, the member model, the hysteretic model, and the damage model etc. The conclusion based on the results of analysis is as following. : (1) Story shear-displacement relationship is similar to the experiment result but from the energy point of view, the analysis relationship is similar to the experiment result but from the energy point of view, the analysis result was different from the experiment result. (2) Plastic hinges were found to occur mainly in beams at first story while all the columns had plastic hinges throughout the structure. (3) Failure mode is a little different from experiment result in the yielding mechanism. (4) Damage index isabout 0.25. This means that the degree of damage is moderate and can be repairable.

  • We propose an adaptive cooperative scheme with a multi-relay node that achieves high bandwidth efficiency and achieves better SEP performance. In the proposed protocol, if the quality of the direct channel is better than that of the all channels from relays to destination, the source will transmit directly to the destination. Otherwise, the source broadcasts the signal and then a potential relay will be chosen to help the source. A re-transmission will also occur if the potential relay cannot be detected. The spectral efficiency is first derived by calculating the probability of each mode, i.e., direct and cooperation transmission. Subsequently, the SEP performance of M-PSK modulation for the scheme is analyzed by considering each event where the source transmits data to the destination. Finally, the obtained analytical results are verified through computer simulations.

  • This paper addresses the small-signal analysis of the multi-phase interleaved boost converter with the coupled inductors operated in the continuous inductor current mode. The generalized and analytical expressions for the transfer functions of interest are derived for various inductor couplings. The dynamic characteristics are analyzed according to the inductor couplings and verified experimentally. The proposed frequency models will be very useful to design the dynamic controllers of the multi-phase interleaved boost converters.

  • The objective of this paper is to assess the variability of modal properties caused by temperature effects and to adjust modal data used for frequency-based damage detection in plate-girder bridges. First, experiments on model plate-girder bridges are described. Next, the relationship between temperature and natural frequencies is assessed and a set of empirical frequency-correction formula are analyzed for the test structure. Finally, a frequency-based method is used to locate and estimate severity of damage in the test structure using experimental modal data which are adjusted by the frequency-correction formula. Here, local damage in beam-type structures is detected by using measured frequencies and analytical mode shapes.

  • The paper provides a comprehensive procedure for the mechanical and magnetic design of Langevin transducer based on giant magnetostrictive material. The the transducer is designed to work at its second mode of vibration, having high mechanical quality factor and low damping coefficient. The design procedure is based on an analytical model and it is verified by finite-element analysis. Experimental tests based on impedance response analysis in first and second modes are carried out on the prototype. Results confirm the appropriate design of this transducer, demonstrating the highest mechanical quality factor between the resonant transducers in the literature.

  • For analysis of the plates and membranes by numerical or analytical methods, the question of choice of the system of functions satisfying the different boundary conditions remains a major challenge to address. It is to this issue that is dedicated this work based on an approach of choice of combinations of trigonometric functions, which are shape functions of a bended beam with the boundary conditions corresponding to the plate support mode. To do this, the shape functions of beam vibrations for strength analysis of the rectangular plates by Kantorovich-Vlasov's method is considered. Using the properties of quasi-orthogonality of those functions allowed assessing to differential equation for every member of the series. Therefore it's proposed some new forms of integration of the beam functions, in order to simplify the problem.

  • A theoretical exploration for determining the characteristic length of the cohesive zone for a double cantilever beam (DCB) specimen under mode I loading was conducted. Two traction-separation laws were studied: (i) a law with only a linear elastic stage from zero to full traction strength; and (ii) a bilinear traction law illustrating a progressive softening stage. Two analytical solutions were derived for the first law, which fit well into two existing solution groups. A transcendental equation was derived for the bilinear traction law, and a graphical method was presented to identify the resultant cohesive zone length. The study using the bilinear traction law enabled the theoretical investigation of the individual effects of cohesive law parameters (i.e., strength, stiffness, and fracture energy) on the cohesive zone length. Correlations between the theoretical and finite element (FE) results were assessed. Effects of traction law parameters on the cohesive zone length were discussed.

  • In this paper, vibration analysis of concrete foundations resting on soil medium is studied. The soil medium is simulated by Winkler model considering spring element. The concrete foundation is modeled by thick plate elements based on classical plate theory (CPT). Utilizing energy method consists of potential energy, kinetic energy and external works in conjunction with Hamilton's principle, the motion equations are derived. Assuming the simply supported boundary condition for the concrete foundation, the Navier method is used for calculating the frequency of the structure. The effect of different parameters such as soil medium, mode numbers, length to width ratio and length to thickness ratio of the concrete foundation are shown on the frequency of the structure. At the first, the results are validated with other published works in order to show the accuracy of the obtained results. The results show that considering the soil medium, the frequency of the structure increases significantly.
