  • This paper proposes a small VCM (Voice coil motor) type actuator using curved suspensions for auto-focusing and zoom motions for mobile information devices. 1'he proposed focusing actuator adopts a nontraditional type of suspension using curved beams in order to extend output displacement within small height restriction. The curved beam is similar to the leaf spring type which is usually used in optical disk drives. In addition, three different materials are considered for the curved suspension model, and Aluminum shows the best dynamic characteristics. The proposed zoom actuator does not use a suspension supporting bobbin but a moving rail and a sloper mechanism by generating rotational force at lens holder. The sensitivity of design parameters on output performance is studied using ANSYS (3D FEM tool). Experiments using a prototype of the proposed actuator model verified the analytical prediction and performance.

  • The study on reducing vehicle noise and vibration has gained much attention to ensure the comfortability as well as the safety. These days. in this paper, we applied Statistical Energy Analysis(SEA) to characterize the tire assembly, which is useful analytical tool for mid- and high-frequency range. First, the SEA tire model was developed by dividing the tire and the wheel into several subsystems. The material properties were estimated experimentally. Finally. the SEA model was validated by comparing the estimated and the measured. In addition, we investigated the energy level and the energy transfering paths through the tire assembly in different frequency region.

  • Flux linkage of phase windings is a key parameter in determining the behavior of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) [1-8]. Therefore, the accurate prediction of flux linkage at aligned and unaligned rotor positions makes a significant contribution to the design of an SRM and its analytical approach is not straightforward due to nonlinear saturation in flux. Although several different approaches using a finite element analysis (FEA) or a curve-fitting tool have been employed to compute phase flux linkage [2-5], they are not suitable for a simple design procedure because the FEA necessitates a large amount of time in both modeling and solving with complexity for every motor design, and the curve-fitting requires the data of flux linkage from either an experimental test or an FEA simulation. In this paper, phase flux linkage at aligned and unaligned rotor positions is estimated by means of a reluctance network, and the proposed approach is analytically verified in terms of accuracy compared to FEA.

  • This paper reports on an ongoing study that utilizes the literacy autobiographies of 10 Asian and 10 Western graduate students from TESOL Masters programs in Korea and America as data for a cross cultural study on the discursive process of identity formation and the development of critical consciousness (Freire, 2000). While the data suggests similarities and differences between cultures in terms of the effects of education, social relationships, media, and religion, no definitive claims may be made due to the small size of the research corpus. However, analysis of the data revealed that only four of the narratives could be judged as engaging in critical introspection of individual subjects systems of knowledge, values, and beliefs, as opposed to the other narratives that were primarily descriptive of individual personal experiences. As such, this study found that while the willingness and ability to engage in the critical practices which lead to the development of a critical consciousness are similar across cultures, they may be mediated by the literacy practices inscribed in education, media, and other social practices.

  • Quantum dot (QD) is an emerging novel nanomaterial that has wide applicability and superior functionality with relatively low cost. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has been contributed to elucidate various features of QDs and to improve their overall performance. In particular, NMR spectroscopy becomes an essential analytical tool to monitor and analyze organic ligands on the QD surface. In the present mini-review, application of NMR spectroscopy as a superb methodology to appreciate organic ligands is discussed. In addition, it was recently noted that ligands exert rather greater influence on diverse features of QDs than our initial anticipation, for which contribution of NMR spectroscopy is briefly reviewed.

  • As the main aim of infectious disease epidemiology is to prevent a pathogen transmission, traditional epidemiological studies have focused on the evaluation of individual-level risk factors. But group-level factors as well as individual-level are important in understanding and controlling transmission of infectious diseases, especially sex-transmitted infectious diseases. Multi-level analysis (MLA) is known as a powerful analytical tool for investigating both levels simultaneously. While new cases of HIV/AIDS in Korea are increasing annually, it is urgently needed to establish research system for MLA led by Korea Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.

  • Presented in this paper is a methodology for combining a Bayesian statistical approach with Data Quality Objectives (a structured decision-making method) to provide increased levels of confidence in analytical data when approaching a waste boundary. Development of sampling and analysis plans for the characterisation of radioactive waste often use a simple, one pass statistical approach as underpinning for the sampling schedule. Using a Bayesian statistical approach introduces the concept of Prior information giving an adaptive sample strategy based on previous knowledge. This aligns more closely with the iterative approach demanded of the most commonly used structured decision-making tool in this area (Data Quality Objectives) and the potential to provide a more fully underpinned justification than the more traditional statistical approach. The approach described has been developed in a UK regulatory context but is translated to a waste stream from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station to demonstrate how the methodology can be applied in this context to support decision making regarding the ultimate disposal option for radioactive waste in a more global context.

  • While many studies on feasibility analysis for housing projects have been released, the main focus was on economic feasibility and factors related to developers were not clearly identified enough to be used in practice. In order to establish a feasibility analysis model for apartment development projects requested by developers in Korea, 31 driving factors behind projects' success were identified under seven different categories. Criterions of the each factor were also developed, and weight of each factor was assigned by applying the Analytical Hierarchy Process(AHP). Finally, based on the Monte Carlo simulation, the feasibility analysis model was established, providing probability distribution of project's grade. The model was applied to 12 housing projects to verify its reliability, and found that the model properly filtered projects that are unlikely to be profitable, indicating reasonable reliability of the model. The model can be a useful tool for contractors, especially with less experience in analyzing project development feasibility.

  • Calcium silicate hydrate(C-S-H) is the principal binding phase that controls the strength and thermal stability of concrete. However, the effects of high temperature on the lattice structure and interatomic structure of C-S-H remains poorly understood due to its nanocrystallinity. This study aims to elucidate the change in interatomic distance of synthetic C-S-H with different Ca/Si molar ratios after exposure to high temperature via high energy X-ray scattering experiment which is a powerful analytical tool for amorphous materials.

  • The current study aims to determine digital transformation (organizational, technical, and human resources) requirements at Saudi universities from Umm Al-Qura University faculty members' perspectives. The researcher used a quantitative approach based on the descriptive analytical design. To answer the questions of the study, the researcher used the questionnaire as a data collection tool. The questionnaire was sent electronically to faculty members working in colleges and institutes affiliated with Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah Al-Mukarramah, Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire consisted of the three dimensions of digital transformation: organizational; technical; and human resources requirements. The results showed that requirements related to human resources came first with an average of 2.25 then the organizational requirements with an average of 1.95, and in the last, technical requirements came with an average of 1.64. In addition, some suggestions were given by the participants (faculty members) related to the mechanism that could contribute to implementing digital transformation at Saudi universities. Likewise, at the end of the study, the researcher has given some suggestions related to the implementation of digital transformation requirements at Saudi universities.
