  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the trend of nursing theories by Korean Journal of Adult Nursing (KJAN) for the last five years and to provide future directions for improvement. Methods: The study analyzed data collected from 323 research papers published in KJAN between 2010~2014. Descriptive analysis was conducted with a focus on frequency and percentage for the quantitative analysis. Qualitative analysis was performed for the analysis of nursing theories. Results: As for research topics, the analysis results based on the meta-paradigm of nursing show that the most frequent factors of analysis were adult patients in the area of human beings, hospitals in the area of environment, depression, anxiety, and suicide in the area of health, and all the influential factors in the area of nursing. The analysis results of uses of nursing theories in the papers reveal that only 4(1.2%) out of total 323 papers used the nursing theories, which indicates that the linkage and utilization of nursing theories in the published papers for the last five years were poor. Conclusion: We needs to make efforts at the society level to activate nursing theory utilization in research which is beloved to connect nursing practice, education, and research.

  • Purpose: This study examined the suitability of using text network analysis (TNA) methodology for topic analysis of academic papers related to nursing. Methods: TNA background theories, software programs, and research processes have been described in this paper. Additionally, the research methodology that applied TNA to the topic analysis of the academic nursing papers was analyzed. Results: As background theories for the study, we explained information theory, word co-occurrence analysis, graph theory, network theory, and social network analysis. The TNA procedure was described as follows: 1) collection of academic articles, 2) text extraction, 3) preprocessing, 4) generation of word co-occurrence matrices, 5) social network analysis, and 6) interpretation and discussion. Conclusion: TNA using author-keywords has several advantages. It can utilize recognized terms such as MeSH headings or terms chosen by professionals, and it saves time and effort. Additionally, the study emphasizes the necessity of developing a sophisticated research design that explores nursing research trends in a multidimensional method by applying TNA methodology.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the published articles in the Journal of Korean Academy of Adult Nursing from 2004 through 2006. Methods: Two hundreds and ten articles were analyzed focusing on research methodology and key words using descriptive statistics. Results: The proportion of quantitative research was 88.1%, while the proportion of qualitative research was 5.2%. The majority of the qualitative research design was survey(67.1%). Seventy-four percent of the research had verbal consent and 8% had written consent from the participants. Eight percent of the research provided conceptual framework. The prevailing data collection settings were hospitals(50.5%) and community(37.1%). For the data analysis, 95% used parametric analysis methods; descriptive statistics(26.2%), chi-square test(18.3%), t-test(18%) and ANOVA(17.4%). Key words were categorized into four nursing domain: human, health, nursing, and environment. The most frequently used domain was health. Conclusion: The number of the published articles in the Journal of Korean Academy of Adult Nursing has been increased and quality has been improved compared with the articles published before the 2000 year. Varied research methodology and data analysis methods were utilized.

  • Purpose: Recent advances in computer and mobile technologies have brought increasing usages of IT technology in nursing research across nursing fields. Despite the increasing usages, there has been little discussion on methodological issues involved in nursing research using IT technology. This is a discussion paper to identify methodological issues in IT technology-based nursing research. Methods: An analysis was done using content analysis on research team meeting minutes and research team members' research diaries in a clinical trial that tested the efficacy of a technology-based intervention. First, several major categories of IT technology-based nursing research are concisely summarized. Then, the method that was used for this analysis is presented. Results: The findings are presented as themes reflecting methodological issues in IT technology-based research: (a) difficulties in recruitment due to necessary technology literacy; (b) facilitating recruitment through allowing the use of multiple languages; (c) participants' preferences for specific IT technology; (d) efforts needed to ensure technological security; (e) participants' preferences for design; and (f) necessary considerations on timing. Conclusion: Finally, future directions for nursing research using IT technology are proposed based on the identified issues.

  • Purpose: Topic modeling is a text mining technique that extracts concepts from textual data and uncovers semantic structures and potential knowledge frameworks within context. This study aimed to identify major keywords and network structures for each major topic to discern research trends in women's health nursing published in the Korean Journal of Women Health Nursing (KJWHN) using text network analysis and topic modeling. Methods: The study targeted papers with English abstracts among 373 articles published in KJWHN from January 2011 to December 2021. Text network analysis and topic modeling were employed, and the analysis consisted of five steps: (1) data collection, (2) word extraction and refinement, (3) extraction of keywords and creation of networks, (4) network centrality analysis and key topic selection, and (5) topic modeling. Results: Six major keywords, each corresponding to a topic, were extracted through topic modeling analysis: "gynecologic neoplasms," "menopausal health," "health behavior," "infertility," "women's health in transition," and "nursing education for women." Conclusion: The latent topics from the target studies primarily focused on the health of women across all age groups. Research related to women's health is evolving with changing times and warrants further progress in the future. Future research on women's health nursing should explore various topics that reflect changes in social trends, and research methods should be diversified accordingly.
