In this paper, we report our recent work on a indexing and retrieval system of broadcast news using audio content analysis. Key issues addressed in this work are two major parts of the audio indexing system: anchorperson detection based on audio segmentation, and phone-based spoken document retrieval, developed in the framework of the emerging MPEG-7 standard. Experiments are conducted on a database of Britisch broadcast news videos. We discuss the development of the retrieval system, and the evaluation of each part and the retrieval system.

This study is for analyzing the tone, the frame and the characteristics of political news in social media. Social news media is not same as old media in sharing news freely by SNS like tweeter, facebook and reporting, editing by anyone using SNS with various opinions. With Content analysis, sampling 419 cases from 'Wikitree' by the keyword, 'presidential election', all the full text analysed each how is social media making public opinion differently and which frame is using in. As the result, the social media has different tone, frame, and characteristic due to the reported figure, type of report, information source, attitude to the government, specifically shows a lack of in-depth report and distinct soft-journalism just same as old media's. Because the tone of social news media is not probable, specific but improbable, vague, using the irrational, strategic and episodic frame mainly.

This thesis is a content analysis on whether the proportion of structural element and theme association of television news imagery is different, depending on the historical background, and on what it means, which can be the index of scene-based and realistic report. Most researches of television news are horizontal studies of the same period, making light of vertical studies reflecting the change of age. Therefore, This study analyzed 729 items composed of 11,945 shots extracted from MBC Newsdesk from 1987, to 2007, the samples of which were extracted by systematic random sampling with five years' interval. This content analysis found out that there was high proportion of scene-based and realistic report such as 'sound-bite', 'event footage', 'direct matching' in the year 1987, 2007, and high proportion of 'corroboration shot', 'file footage', 'indirect reference', 'literal matching only' in the year 1997, which revealed the fact that reality-based report had not been faithfully accomplished in 1997.

This study examined how the three major newspapers covered the press reform movement in Korea. Despite that the NGOs and Korean government keep trying to reform the market and structure of the newspapers, the targeted newspapers argue that they are unjustly accused of the dominance of the press market made by the readers' choice. Using frame analysis and discourse analysis, this study analyzed the news coverage on the press reform for 6 months and revealed that these major newspapers presumed to be targeted were totally challenging against the press reform by means of flaming of news and using news discourse. The ways of challenge were, firstly they appealed to the readers that the press reform is the press suppress so that they have to fight against this unacceptable pressure. And secondly, they report the news selectively for their own interests by elaborating, magnifying, or reducing the facts. Thirdly, they attack the government policies and major figures leading the press reform by letting the outside columnists favorable to their own standing point. And finally, they conduct the poll on and off and report what they want according to their self interests.

This study investigated the news report tendency and frame by three major Korean television networks(KBS, MBC, and SBS) in their news reports on issues involving their own interests and considering in social level. The three issues chosen for this study are 'advertising regulations for total amount', 'the reallocation of 700MHz spectrum' and 'raising TV license fee'(this issue applicable only to KBS). By using content analysis method, this study identified extremely weighted tendency toward themselves by the network television channels. They have used highly biased tone and sources to reinforce their private interests in news reports about the three controversial issues. In terms of story content, the news reports have used attribution of responsibility frame dominantly in 'advertising regulations for total amount' issue, whereas the moral frame was dominant in the other two issues.

What is the basic nature of Korean public broadcasting system? This research explores this question through an analysis of KBS news coverage of the Korean housing market. This study spotlights the internal news production processes. In detail, this study investigates newsroom routines, such as news selection, news gatherings, and news production. As a result, this study reveals KBS can be classified as "Publicity Model" following reasons. First, KBS news selection process stresses higher viewer ratings for competitive market share and belittles public interests of serving the citizen. This caused KBS news to provide fragmented and truncated news information and to constrict high quality news of significant information for citizen. Second, KBS newsroom operates under the minimum staff resource to produce news programmes and has developed official source dependency as a routine for news gathering. Third, under the limits of report format, KBS news worked as a neutral deliverer of government message and failed to provide more detailed information and diverse viewpoints.

This study examined research trends via network analyses of keywords appeared in academic research articles about news reports in South Korea during the last 10 years from 2006 to 2015. Keyword network analyses of 4410 keywords from 1108 articles suggested that framing, agenda setting, third-person effect, selective exposure, and uses and gratification were main theories but most studies used framing theory. Research areas included news reports on politics, economics, science, world issues, or tour. However, research on news reports covering culture, sports or daily life were not identified. In terms of media, research on both traditional and emerging media were ample. Research on broadcasting new, online news, and social media were frequently observed.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of Korean media on the topic of archives & records management based on time-series analysis. In this study, from January, 1999 to June, 2018, 4,680 news articles on archives & records management topics were extracted from BigKinds. In order to examine the characteristics of the media coverage on the archives & records management topic, this study was analyzed to the difference of the press coverage by period, subject, and type of the media. In addition, this study was conducted word-frequency based content analysis and semantic network analysis to investigate the content characteristics of media on the subject. Based on these results, this study was analyzed to the differences of media coverage by period, subject, and type of media. As a result, the news in the field of records management showed that there was a difference in the amount of news coverage and news contents by period, subject, and type of media. The amount of news coverage began to increase after the Presidential Records Management Act was enacted in 2007, and the largest amount of news was reported in 2013. Daily newspapers and financial newspapers reported the largest amount of news. As a result of analyzing news reports, during the first 10 years after 1999, news topics were formed around the issues arising from the application and diffusion process of the concept of archives & records management. However, since the enactment of the Presidential Records Management Act, archives & records management has become a major factor in political and social issues, and a large amount of political and social news has been reported.

This study examined how German newspapers and magazines report Korean mass culture, specifically what content on Hallyu (Korean wave) was present and what news frames were used. External characteristics, the content attributes, report trend, and news frames on Hallyu in the German media were analyzed. According to the results, German media from 2009 to 2014 reported the least about Korean wave with only a total of 78 articles. The greatest amount of articles occurred in 2012 when by PSY was a global success. The most common Korean wave articles focused on film and K-pop, but not drama. Hallyu news showed mostly a positive trend. Additionally, a thematic frame was used. Content revealed that a culturally interesting frame was most common. In order to improve the Korea image in Germany, it is proposed that 'the mediated Culture PR' be adapted to German media.

The purpose was to examine what kind of discourse about foreigners in the media in a situation where hatred toward foreigners prevailed in a pandemic situation. News data related to Chinese international students(CIS) was collected for 2020, The 11 optimal topics were selected derived through LDA analysis. They were analyzed in an exploratory level, focusing on the relationship with major events per year. The news about CIS in 2020 was intensively linked to reports on the COVID19 situation. There was a tendency to report in response to the presupposes CIS as potential confirmed patients.
