An Amplitude Proportional Friction Damper (APFD) system is considered in order to improve the stick-slip characteristics of Coulomb friction damper. The frictional force is proportional to the amplitude in APFD system and the system is non-linear as is Coulomb damper system. The free vibration analysis on an 1-DOF system has conducted to demonstrate the characteristics of the APFD system and the results show that the APFD system has similar damping characteristics to the viscous damper system. It is concluded that the APFD system may become a cost effective substitution for the viscous damper and it also has certain advantages over Coulomb damper system since the APFD system can be designed to work with no stick-slip.
Here, we investigated the observed sunspot areas with respect to latitudes using the Hilbert transform technique. Conventional study of the cyclic patterns of sunspots is based on the Lomb-Scargle periodogram, which only obtains the amplitude information. In comparison, our approach characterizes the amplitude as well as the phase of solar activity. We demonstrated the solar North-South asymmetry in the instantaneous amplitude by analyzing daily sunspot data set spanning from the solar cycles 11 to 24. Our findings confirm that the northern hemisphere is dominant in the solar cycles 14, 15, 16, 18, and 20. Unlike the amplitude, the North-South asymmetry in the period of solar activity could not be established. We have also found that the standard deviation as a measure of fluctuation in the phase derivative is minimum in the latitude band 10° < l < 20°, and the fluctuations obtained for latitudes above 30° are considerable.

The nonlinear vibration characteristics of hydrodynamic journal bearings with a circumferentially groove are analyzed numerically when the external sinusoidal disturbances are given to the rotor-bearing system continuously. Also, the cavitation algorithm implementing the Jakobsson-Floberg-Olsson boundary condition is adopted to predict cavitation regions in the fluid film more accurately than conventional analysis which uses the Reynolds condition. It is found that the difference between linear and nonlinear analysis is much more remarkable as the amplitude of external disturbance increases, and it depends upon the excitation frequency of external disturbance. It is also shown that the cavity region in the fluid film is increased as the amplitude or excitation frequency of external disturbance increases. The whirling center of the steady state orbit moves closer to the bearing center as the amplitude or the excitation frequency of the external disturbance increases because of smaller range of full film region.
The bright spot is an indicator for natural gas on seismic stack sections, but it is also shown on layers where the acoustic impedance contrast is large. In order to distinguish sharply between gas and impedance contrast we need additional detailed data processing such as velocity analysis, AVO analysis and seismic complex analysis including measures of seismic amplitude, frequency, and phase. In this study, we performed detailed velocity analysis, complex analysis and DHI (Direct Hydrocarbon Indicator) analysis which is the result of amplitude variation according to the incident angles. The seismic complex analysis gives us the geological information which depends on geophysical properties at the interest layer. For the complex analysis, we computed several seismic attributes such as the instantaneous amplitude, the first and the second derivatives of the instantaneous amplitude, the instantaneous phase, the instantaneous frequency and weighted average instantaneous frequency. Then we applied these analysis techniques to a seismic data of Korea offshore which had been logged. From the result of this data analysis, it could be said that high possibility area for gas layer detection has amplitude anomalies in the instantaneous amplitude, the instantaneous frequency and the DHI section resulting from the AVO analysis. If there are not any other anomalies in detailed data processing, it will have low possibility for gas layer detection.
The National Oceanographic Research Institute of KOREA started to survey for the basic data necessary to territorial sea and EEZ identification and marine development with Multi-Beam Echo Sounder(L3 SeaBeam 2112) since 1996. The Multi-Beam surveys has provided a very new and precise way of describing the morphology and nature of the underwater seabed. Multi-Beam Echo Sounder systems employ sound waves propagating at angles which vary from vertical to nearly horizontal. The locations on the bottom where echoes are generated cover a swath whose port to starboard width may be equal to many times the water depth. Newer Multi-beam bathymetric sonars provide both a beam by beam depth and backscatter amplitude of the bottom. But The backscattered amplitude didn't use for identification of bottom properties because backscatter amplitude effects by the many environmental variables of underwater and seabed. We investigates the utilization of geo-referenced backscatter amplitude and analysis of relationship between The Backscattered Amplitude and Sidescan Sonar imagery from Sea Beam 2112. For the backscattered amplitude imagery mainly represents the properties of sediment, we computed the beam geometry, time-varied amplifier gain, and mainly incidence angle to the topography using bathymetric model at each ping. In this paper, those issues are illustrated, and the angular independent imagery based on swath topographic model is described.

This study is aimed to show that an asymmetric load in the frontal plane leads to an increase in low back loading and fatigue in comparison with a symmetric load when workers lift an external weight by investigating previous studies and verifying the phenomenon with an experiment. Ten male subjects are required to lift and hold an given external load at 70cm height during 50sec, then the EMG amplitude and median frequency on bilateral low back muscle groups (Longissimus, Iliocostalis, and Multifidus) are recorded and analyzed. Independent variables are two-level load weight (13kg, 20kg) and three-level LCG (Center, 6.5cm to the right, and 13cm to the right), and dependent variables are EMG amplitude average, difference, and Fatigue Index (FI). Results show that load weight increases significantly amplitude average and FI, but LCG does significantly amplitude difference and FI significantly (P-value < 0.05). Also the correlation coefficient between amplitude difference and FI is over 0.99. These implies that trunk loading should be explained by not EMG amplitude but muscle fatigue aspect since the association between an external load and amplitude is linear, but the relationship between an external load and median frequency as muscle fatigue index is almost exponential.
This paper proposes a simplified elastic-plastic analysis procedure using the penalty factors presented in the Code Case N-779 for strain-based fatigue assessment of nuclear safety class 1 components under severe seismic loads such as safety shutdown earthquake and beyond design-basis earthquake. First, a simplified elastic-plastic analysis procedure for strain-based fatigue assessment of nuclear safety class 1 components under the severe seismic loads was proposed based on the analysis result for the simplified elastic-plastic analysis procedure in the Code Case N-779 and the stress categories corresponding to normal operation and seismic loads. Second, total strain amplitude was calculated directly by performing finite element cyclic elastic-plastic seismic analysis for a hot leg nozzle in pressurizer surge line subject to combined loading including deadweight, pressure, seismic inertia load, and seismic anchor motion, as well as was derived indirectly by applying the proposed analysis procedure to the finite element elastic stress analysis result for each load. Third, strain-based fatigue assessment was implemented by applying the strain-based fatigue acceptance criteria in the ASME B&PV Code, Sec. III, Subsec. NB, Article NB-3200 and by using the total strain amplitude values calculated. Last, the total strain amplitude and the fatigue assessment result corresponding to the simplified elastic-plastic analysis were compared with those using the finite element elastic-plastic seismic analysis results. As a result of the comparison, it was identified that the proposed analysis procedure can derive reasonable and conservative results.
Aerodynamic forces of vortex-induced vibration and galloping are going to be coupled when their onset velocities are close to each other, which will induce the cross-wind amplitudes of the structures increased continuously with ever-increasing wind velocities. The main purpose of the present work is going to propose an empirical formula to predict the response amplitude of VIV-galloping interaction. Firstly, two typical mathematical models for the coupled oscillations, i.e., Tamura & Shimada model and Parkinson & Corless model are comparatively summarized. Then, the key parameter affecting response amplitude is determined through comparative numerical simulations with Tamura & Shimada model. For rectangular cylinders with the side ratio from 0.5 to 2.5, which are actually prone to develop the VIV and galloping induced interaction responses, an empirical amplitude prediction formula is proposed after regression analysis on comprehensively collected experimental data with the predetermined key parameter.
This paper considers the maximum likelihood (ML) detection of 16-ary differential amplitude and phase shift keying (DAPSK) in Rayleigh fading channels. Based on the conditional likelihood function, two new receiver structures, namely ML symbol-by-symbol receiver and ML sequence receiver, are proposed. For the symbol-by-symbol detection, the conventional DAPSK detector is shown to be sub-optimum due to the complete separation in the phase and amplitude detection, but it results in very close performance to the ML detector provided that its circular amplitude decision thresholds are optimized. For the sequence detection, a simple Viterbi algorithm with only two states are adopted to provide an SNR gain around 1 dB on the amplitude bit detection compared with the conventional detector.
The prediction of VIV amplitude is essential for the design and fatigue life estimation of steel tubes in tubular transmission towers. Limited to costly and time-consuming traditional experimental and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods, a machine learning (ML)-based method is proposed to efficiently predict the VIV amplitude of steel tubes in transmission towers. Firstly, by introducing the first-order mode shape to the two-dimensional CFD method, a simplified response analysis method (SRAM) is presented to calculate the VIV amplitude of steel tubes in transmission towers, which enables to build a dataset for training ML models. Then, by taking mass ratio M*, damping ratio ξ, and reduced velocity U* as the input variables, a Kriging-based prediction method (KPM) is further proposed to estimate the VIV amplitude of steel tubes in transmission towers by combining the SRAM with the Kriging-based ML model. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed methods are demonstrated by using three full-scale steel tubes with C-shaped, Cross-shaped, and Flange-plate joints, respectively. The results show that the SRAM can reasonably calculate the VIV amplitude, in which the relative errors of VIV maximum amplitude in three examples are less than 6%. Meanwhile, the KPM can well predict the VIV amplitude of steel tubes in transmission towers within the studied range of M*, ξ and U*. Particularly, the KPM presents an excellent capability in estimating the VIV maximum amplitude by using the reduced damping parameter SG.
