In this study, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) was used as a hydrophilic polymer carrier to develop solid dispersion formulations for enhancing solubility and dissolution rate of pranlukast, one of poorly soluble drugs that has been broadly used for the treatment of asthma. PEG based solid dispersions with or without poloxamer were prepared by hot melting and solvent evaporation methods. The resultant solid dispersions were characterized by DSC and powder X-ray measurements, and their morphological properties were observed to be partially changed to amorphous state with reduced crystallinity. Dissolution and solubility tests showed that the solubility and dissolution rate of the solid dispersions were significantly enhanced. The solid dispersion formulation prepared by the hot melting method with a chemical composition of pranlukast:PEG:poloxamer = 1:5:1 demonstrated the most enhanced solubility and dissolution rate. The results suggest that the solid dispersions based on PEG and poloxamer are promising systems for the enhancement of solubility and bioavailability of pranlukast.
The word of lignin is derived from the Latin word 'ligum' meaning wood. Lignin is complex polymer consisting of coniferyl alcohol, sinapyl alcohol and p-coumaryl alcohol unit and has an amorphous, three dimensional network structure which is hard to be hydrolyzed by acid. Lignin is found in the cell wall of plants lignified. The mode of polymerization of these alcohols in the cell wall lead to a heterogeneous branched and cross-linked polymer in which phenyl propane units are linked by carbon-carbon and carbon-oxygen bonds. This polymerization of precursors, p-coumaryl alcohol, coniferyl alcohol and sinapyl alcohol to lignin is formed by enzymic dehydrolyzation. The reaction is initiated by an electron transfer which results in the formation of resonance-stabilized phenoxy radical. The combination of these radicals produces a variety of dimers, trimers and oligomers and so on. Lignin research has been divided into basic and practical application field. The basic studies contains biosynthesis, chemical structure, distribution in the cell wall and reactivity by reductants, oxidants and organic solvents. The application research will be approached the reaction of lignin in various pulp making involving pulp bleaching and its effect on pulp qualities. Lignin also will be studied for the production of fine chemicals, polymer products and the conservation into an energy source like petroleum oil because the amount of lignin produced in pulp making process is more than 51,000,000 tons per year in the world. Both basic and application research must lay emphasis on the development for the utilization of lignin and the pulping process. But these researches can not be completed without understanding lignin structure containing functional groups. Therefore, this paper was focused on the review of lignin formulation which has been studied since 1948 in chronological order. This review was based on monomers, dimers, trimers and tetramers of phenyl propane unit structures which were isolated and identified by different methods from various wood.ious wood.
Semi-flexible liquid crystalline polymers containing a mesogenic group and an octamethylene flexible spacer in the main chain were synthesized by solution polycondensation. The mesogenic group in the polymer consists of four aromatic rings connected by ester and ketone, ether, sulfide, methylene, sulfone, or isopropylidene linkage groups. This paper discusses effects of the central linker of the mesogenic group on polymer properties. The structures and properties of synthesized polymers were investigated by $^1H$-NMR, FT-IR, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and polarizing optical microscope (POM). Polymers having bent linkage groups exhibited low thermal transition temperatures, narrow mesophase temperature ranges, low liquid crystallinity, and good solubilities in organic solvents, while those having bulky linkage groups were amorphous and exhibited high glass transition temperatures.
In order to reduce carbon dioxide, one of the major greenhouse gases, a new type of copolymer, poly(alkylene carbonate) has been synthesized. The alternating copolymers have been obtained from carbon dioxide and various epoxides with zinc carboxylate as a catalyst. The number-average molecular weight of the polymer is about 50,000 and polydispersity is rather broad(5~10). The polymers are amorphous, and glass-clear materials that exhibit unusually facile and clean thermal decomposition behavior. Complete decomposition with no carbon residue is observed at elevated temperature even in an inert atmosphere. Terpolymers with bulkier epoxides improve the physical properties of the copolymer with simple epoxides. The decomposition properties of the polymer provide versatile applications such as ceramic, metal, and electronic binders and lost-foam casting. Further application of the polymer for the barrier film or the plasticizer will be investigated.
Poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate), PEN, is a relatively well-known polymer used for engineering purposes. Naphthalene ring provides rigidity to the polymer backbone, thus, it elevated the glass transition temperature and enhanced mechanical properties. The structure and properties of PEN affect a processing conditions severely, and the high-thermal stability have been had a poor thermal processibility. Hence, the basic mechanism of solvent drawing, is very much the same as that of thermal drawing from glassy state since both involve the inducement of segmental mobility. The former achieves the goal by use of chemical energy, and the latter does so by use of thermal energy. Generally, the sorption of the solvent by the polymer has a plasticizing effect, and leads to a lowering of the glass transition temperature, $T_g$. In this paper, the dynamic viscoelasticity behavior in liquid-drawing process of an unoriented amorphous PEN films were investigated using Rheovibron. The results are as follows : (1) For the drawing in silicone oil, the drawing below $T_g$. had $\alpha{2}$-dispersion due to an inhomogeneous taut structure. (2) For the drawing in water, the inhomogeneous taut structure reduced by the effect of plasticization even below $T_g$. (3) For the drawing in butanol, the only aliphatic segment in PEN have some molecular mobility but the mobility of the aromatic segment having naphthalene ring is nearly impossible. (4) For the drawing in dioxane/water mixing solvent, the solvent effect is complementary each other and accordingly the entire molecular conformation have stable state. (5) For the drawing in dioxane/butanol mixing solvent, the inhomogeneity of the taut structure and the aromatic segment increase with increasing the temperature and this tendencies correspond with that of the draw ratio.
When polyethylene terephthalate(PET) film specimen were stepwise elongated under tension with various speeds of about 0.5~500 mm/min, the necking area, consisted of transparent and opaque bands, was formed during plastic deformation. Stress oscillation was apparently obtained in the stress-strain curve of above specimen. However, stress oscillation was not obtained in the stress-strain curve of annealing specimen. Microstructure was examined dynamically using an optical microscopy and thermal analysis was carried out in a differential scanning calorimeter at a heating rate of 10${\circ}$/min. Also, orientation and crystallization were examined using monochromatic-pinhole technique and elastic modulus was measured by a dynamic mechanical analyzer in the temperature range of -150~70 ${\circ}$ with the frequency of 1 Hz. Transparent PET products were fabricated by use of the PET pellets annealed at 83${\circ}$ for 30 min in an electric furnace.
Polycaprolactone (PCL) and thermoplastic starch (TPS) blends were prepared. Mechanical properties, thermal property, water absorption, biodegradability by composting and surface morphology of PCL/TPS blends were investigated. The compositions of PCL/TPS blends were 90/10, 80/20, 70/30, 60/40, 50/50, 40/60, 30/70, 20/80, and 10/90. Strength and elongation at break decreased as the content of TPS increased, while modulus increased. DSC thermogram of TPS showed two glass transition temperatures (T$_{g}$ ) at 23$^{\circ}C$ and 126$^{\circ}C$. And TPS proved to be an amorphous polymer because there was no endothermic peak due to the melting of starch crystal. The unchanged melting temperatures and T$_{g}$ 's of PCL/TPS blends revealed that PCL and TPS were not miscible. All of the blends were found to be mechanically compatible but phase separated in each other. After 45 days composting, the biodegradability of PCL was 44% and that of PCL/TPS blends increased as the contents of TPS increased.
Hybrid process of thermally-induced phase separation and stretching was developed for the preparation of microporous polypropylene hollow fiber membranes. Precursor for stretching was prepared by using soybean oil as a diluent and benzoic acid as a nucleating agent far the sphenlite control and it was stretched far the micrporous hollow fiber membrane. The effects of stretching ratio and deformation rate for stretching process were investigated. Increase of stretching ratio resulted in the greater pore size with nonuniform size distribution. Higher deformation rate also increaser the pore size with uniform size distribution. Stretching ratio was closely related with the orientation of polymer chain and increased the mechanical strength of the fiber. Increase of deformation rate had little effects on the orientation of crystalline phase, and decreased the orientation of amorphous phase which caused the decrease of tensile strength of the fiber and broke the micro-fibrils connecting spherulites to form a circular pore shape.
The effect of the supercritical carbon dioxide (sc$CO_2$) on ion-conductive behaviors for polyether electrolytes based on, both poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly [oligo (oxyethylene glycol) methacrylate] (PMEO) with lithium triflate, LiCF$_3$SO$_3$, has been investigated. In particular, the present research is a new concept for improving the ionic conductivity of polyether electrolytes. The maximum ionic conductivity ($\sigma$$_{max}$) at room temperature of the PEO electrolyte was more than 100 times higher, and the $\sigma$$_{max}$ at 9$0^{\circ}C$ of the PMEO electrolyte was 30 times improved by the se$CO_2$ treatment, respectively. It was revealed that the penetration of $CO_2$ molecules into the polymer matrix causes the increase of carrier ions by ion-dispersion effect and the decrease of glass transition temperature (T$_{g}$) by plasticizing effect that results in the improvement of the ion transport behaviors.viors.

In this work, we investigated a low temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin film transistors fabrication process on polymer layers. Dehydrogenation and activation processes were performed by a furnace annealing at a temperature of $430^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr. The crystallization of amorphous silicon films was formed by excimer laser annealing (ELA) method. The p-type device performance, fabricated by polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) films, shows a very good performance with field effect mobility of $77cm^2/V{\cdot}s$ and on/off ratio current ratio > $10^7$. We believe that the poly-Si formed by a LTPS process may be well suited for fabrication of poly-Si TFTs for bendable panel displays such as AMOLED that require circuit integration.
