  • This study focused on the comparison of satisfaction with and perception about their bodies by Korean and American women. The respondents included 242 Korean and 145 American female student volunteers, aged 18 to 27, who were enrolled at Kwangju and Catholic University and Cornell University in the United States. The questionnaire was composed of three sections; a body cathexis, perceived body shape-self, perceived body shape-ideal. Twenty items of 30 items showed a significant difference between Korean and American women. Korean student females were more dissatisfied with 20 items than American women. Even though Korean women were smaller in body build than the American women, the Korean women were more negative about their large type, shoulder, hands, arms, hips, neck, face, and skin color than the American women. There were many significant differences between perceived body shape-self and perceived body shape-ideal responses for Korean and American respondents. The exceptions were that a fuller bosom, and longer legs than perceived body shape were desired in both cultures, longer arms were desired by Korean women and darker skin color was desired by American women.

  • The purpose of this study was to review health and adjustment issues of Korean students in the context of international students' health in the United States. The number of international students studying in the United States has increased. In addition, more and more Koreans come to the United States for education. Korean students formed the fifth largest international group found on American campuses. As more and more international students study on American campuses, their health needs and problems became a concern to health professionals. Most health problems international students experience are stress related and psychosomatic. These students also have difficulties in using health care services. International students face barriers to obtaining health care because of differences in language and differences in cultural beliefs toward health. Korea manifests an eastern culture which is quite different from the western culture, so many Korean students studying in the United States experience difficulties in adjustment and using health care services. The study on the needs of Korean students in the U.S. reviewed in this research was a survey of 105 Korean students at the Pennsylvania State University, 1990. Korean students' health problems included stress, colds, fatigue, and headaches. Homesickness, financial problems, and academic problems were also important problems the Korean students faced. Korean students usually did not participate in any activities with Americans as much as with Koreans. Most Korean students did not participated in any health education workshops held on campus. This may be because the students had not participated previously in health education workshops conducted on campuses in Korea. Korean student's confidence with the English language appeared to be an important variable in using or not using the university health services. University health professionals in the United States need to develop better information system for international students so that they may better use the health services provided on campus. Also, university health professionals working on campuses in Korea need to put more attention on health of college students and provide on-campus health education workshops which meet the student's needs.

Data were obtained by administrating a questionnaire. The instruments used for this study were self-perception profile for children scale(SPPC) and stress scale. 1. All the SPPC factors for Korean children was significantly lower than those for American children. The SPPC fators for American children didn't show any significant differences by grades. But for Korean children seventh graders showed significantly lower SPPC than fifth graders. 2. The most significant factor to predict the golbal self-worth was physical appearance for boys and girls. Self perception for physical appearance is more influential factor than scholastic competence to form the positive self-perception for both boys and girls. 3. The daily hassels for Korean children were significantly higher than those for American childredn. Also daily hassels for seventh graders were significantly higher than those for fifth graders. 4. Daily hassels global self worth correlated negatively. When the level of stress was increased, the global self-worth was decreased.

Based on the interpretist paradigm, this study employed the qualitative research methodology, triangulating the following methods: class observation, interviews, and document analysis. The findings are that the Korean participants perceived the importance of oral classroom interaction in an American classroom, and that there were shared several factors which influence their participation such as socio-cultural differences, course content, English skills, course requirement, and classroom activity types. Based upon the findings, pedagogical implications are provided for the teachers to help Korean students achieve academic success in American universities.

  • This study focuses on the relationship between ethnic identity of Asian-Americans and their appreciation of their ethnic body features, based on reference group theory. A convenience sample of 60 male and 52 female students from various Asian ethnicities attending a mid-western university was used for the study. A 2 (gender) by 2 (ethnic identification) by 2 (socializing group) analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) on body image satisfaction as dependent variable and Body Mass Index score as a covariate was conducted. A significant main effect of ethnic identification was found, which indicates the more respondents identified with their ethnic group, the more likely they were to be satisfied with their appearance. The social group affiliation main effect was not significant. The impact of ethnic identification was significant only for those respondents who socialize more with Americans than with Asians. The results support the idea that one's ethnic group functions as a reference group, which influences body image appraisals.

  • Initially, QFD (Quality Function Deployment) was introduced in 1972 to help design supertanker in Mitsubish's shipyards in Kob, Japan and formally defined by the American Supplier Institute in 1987 as a system for translating consumer requirements into appropriate company requirements at every stage, from research, through product design and development, to manufacture, distribution, installation, and marketing, sales and services. Although QFD has complex and tedious procedure to complete, since 1972, it has now been used by Japanese, American, and European because of its fruitful merits. The objective of this paper is to provide and analyze the trend on the choice of cultural subjects of university students using QFD. The data are collected by questionnaires. The samples for this study are randomly chosen from the universities in Seoul, Kangnung, and Samchok during 3 months (2000. 3 ∼ 2000. 5). The results of this study will play an important role not only for service of students but also for opening of subjects.
