Alumina membrane was prepared by sol-gel coating method using boehmite powder(${\Upsilon}-AlOOH$). The supported and the unsupported alumina membrane were fabricated to investigate the phase transformation and change of microstructure. It is important to control the homogeneous pore size and distribution in application of filtering process. The ${\theta}-to\;{\alpha}-AL_2O_3$ phase transformation (XRD) and the change of microstructure was investigated using scanning electron microscopy(SEM). XRD patterns showed that the supported membrane had $100^{\circ}C$ higher ${\theta}-to\;{\alpha}-AL_2O_3$ transformation temperature compared to the unsupported membrane. The similar effect was also observed for microstructural change of the membrane.
To test the fracture toughness of alumina; a Surface-Crack-in-Flexure (SCF) method, a Single-Edge-Precracked-Beam (SEPB) method and a Single-Edge-V-Notched-Beam (SEVNB) method were used at crosshead rates ranging from 0.005 mm/min to 2 mm/ min and relative humidity ranging from $15\%\;to\;80\%$. The results show that the fracture toughness tested by the SCF method increases with either an increasing loading rate or decreasing relative humidity; in contrast, the toughness by the SEPB method and the SEVNB method does not depend on the loading rate or the relative humidity. Theoretical analysis of the way slow crack growth affects the apparent fracture toughness indicates that the three testing methods have different effects with respect to the loading rate and the relative humidity; moreover, these differences are attributable to differences in the size of the cracks or notches.
For the homogeneous dispersion of $ZrO_2$ particles in $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ceramics, Zr-precusors were mixed with oxide $Al_2O_3$powders by chemical routes such as partial precipitation or partial polymerization of Zr-nitrate solutions. In case of the mechanical mixing of ultrafine $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$ oxide powders, relatively homogeneous dispersion was difficult to achieve so that the particle size and distributions of $ZrO_2$ were relatively inhomogeneous after sintering at high temperature. But when the Zr-Y-hydroxide were co-precipitated to ultrafine $Al_2O_3$ oxide powders followed by calcinations, homogeneous dispersion of nano-sized $ZrO_2$ particles in $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ composite ceramics were obtained. But because of the coalescence of dispersed $ZrO_2$ particles, dispersed $ZrO_2$ was grown up to more than 0.2${mu}m$ (200 nm) when sintered at the temperature of higher than $1500^{\circ}C$ But when the sintering temperature was kept to lower than $1400^{\circ}C$ by using nano-sized $\alpha-alumina$, the particle size of dispersed $ZrO_2$ could be sustained below 0.1 ${\mu}m$. But the coalescence of dispersed $ZrO_2$ between $Al_2O_3$ particles could not be avoided so that the mechanical properties were not enhanced contrary to the expectations. So Zr-polyester precursors were precipitated and coated to the surface of ultrafine $\alpha-alumina$ powders by the polymerization of Ethylene Glycol with Citric Acid and Zirconium Nitrate. By this dispersion much more uniform dispersion of $ZrO_2$ was achieved at $1450\~1600^{\circ}C$ of sintering temperature ranges. And due to especially discrete dispersion of $ZrO_2$ between $Al_2O_3$ particles, their mechanical strength was more enhanced than mechanical mixing or hydroxide precipitation methods.

In this paper, we fabricated ceramic body and sapphire wafer in order to develop a hydraulic pressure sensor with high sensitivity and high temperature stability. The sapphire wafer was adopted with a membrane of capacitance ceramic pressure sensor. The capacitance value of the sensor for the finite element analysis(FEM) showed a linear pressure characteristics. Membrane was processed with a diameter of 32.4 mm and a thickness of 1 mm by using alumina powders. Ceramic body was processed with a diameter 32.4 mm and a thickness 5 mm. The capacitance pressure sensor was made with high heat treatment of the ceramic body and the sapphire wafer. Initially capacitance of the pressure sensor was 50 pF and a capacitance of 110 pF was measured from 5 bar pressure. Output voltage of 5 V was appeared at 5 bar pressure.

In this work, Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) thin films for gas sensor application were deposited on low temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC) substrates, by RF magnetron sputtering method. The LTCC substrate is one of promising materials for this application since it has many advantages (e.g., low cost production, high manufacturing yields and easy realizing 3D structure etc.). The LTCC substrates with thickness of $400\;{\mu}m$ were fabricated by laminating 12 green tapes which consist of alumina and glass particle in an organic binder. The structural properties of the fabricated GZO thin film with thickness of 50 nm is analyzed by X-ray diffraction method (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The film shows good adhesion to the substrate. The GZO gas sensors are tested by gas measurement system and show fast response and recovery characteristics to $NO_x$ gas that is 27.2 and 27.9 sec, recpectively.
This paper illustrates haw $Y_2O_3$ contributes to crack-healing strengths as a function of crack-healing temperature and the additive amount. In investigating mechanical properties, the indentation fracture method is very simple and useful, but careful attention must be paid to the statistical data processing because data may be scattered excessively, especially for brittle materials. To estimate accurate AE signal properties we applied the useful time-frequency method with a discrete wavelet analysis algorithm. In experiments, three kinds of specimens were prepared. After the specimens were indented by a Vickers indentor, they were heat-treated and crack-healed to evaluate bending strength and the AE signal. With higher amounts of the additive powder, as 1, 3, or 5% wt. of $Y_2O_3$, the concentrative tendency of dominant frequency trended toward lower frequency groups. The $Al_2O_3$ ceramic with 3% wt. of $Y_2O_3$ was judged most suitable because it demonstrated superior crack-healing ability and relative concentration on the highest frequency group.

In this work, Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) thin films for NOx gas sensor application were deposited on low temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC) substrates, by RF magnetron sputtering method. The LTCC substrate is one of promising materials for this application since it has many advantages (e.g., low cost production, high manufacturing yields and easy realizing 3D structure etc.). The LTCC substrates with thickness of 400 pm were fabricated by laminating 12 green tapes which consist of alumina and glass particle in an organic binder. The structural properties of the fabricated GZO thin films with different thickness are analyzed by X-ray diffraction method (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The GZO gas sensors are tested by gas measurement system under varing operation temperature and show good performance to the NOx gas in sensitivity and response time.
Herein, we report on the co-firing of a low-K wiring substrate and a middle-K functional substrate in LTCC. Firstly, we researched the sintering behavior and dielectric properties of the low-k wiring substrate comprised by alumina and glass frit with ${\varepsilon}_r$, of $\sim7$ and the middle-k functional substrate comprised by $Ba_{5}Nb_{4}O_{15}$ and glass frit with ${\varepsilon}_r$, of $20\sim30$. The warpage and delamination between the hetero layers of the low-K and the middle-K composition were also studied. In particular, physical matching of the hetero layers could be possible by adjusting of the sintering properties of the composition. We observed that an introduction of the glass frit to the low- and middle-K substrate gives rise to a minimization of an effect given by separation of the hetero layers, and modification of the fraction of the glass frit accompanied by a variation of the composition could control the sintering behavior and its beginning temperature. In the case of co-firing of the L03 as the low-K wiring substrate composition and the M03 as the middle-K functional substrate composition at $875^{\circ}C$, we could fabricate a desirable structure of hetero layers without any kinds of structural defects such as separation, warpage, delamination, pore trap, etc. We suppose that the co-firing techniques described in this study would provide a helpful method to fabricate a LTCC multi-functional for the next generation.
This study was performed to evaluate the fracture toughness of seven commercially available dental ceramics by indentation fracture method. All specimens were fabricated to the final dimensions of approximately 12mm in diameter 2mm in thickness. The characte-ristic indentation dimensions of Vickers or Knoop indentation were measured to calculate the fracture toughness values and Young’s moduli. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Young’s modulus and Vickers hardness of Vita In-Ceram showed the maximum values of $154.4{\pm}49.2$ Gpa and $12.60{\pm}0.71$Gpa, respectively. Results of Scheff test exhibited the significant difference between Vita In-Ceram group and others(p<0.01). 2. Maximum fracture toughness of $2.562{\pm}0.37 MPam^{1/2}$ for Vita In-Ceram and the maxi-mum one of $0.908{\pm}0.132MPam^{1/2}$ for Vitadur-N were calculated. Results of Scheff test showed the significant difference between Vita In-Ceram group and Vita Hi-Ceram(p<0.05) : also between Vita In-Ceram or Vita Hi-Ceram and others(p<0.01). 3. The alumina-based core ceramics showed the aspect of Palmqvist crack for the indentation load of 49.0N, but others showed the median/lateral crack for the indentation load of 9.8N.

Ceramic on ceramic total hip prostheses are developed to apply to young patients because lifetime of polyethylene joint prostheses is limited by loosening due to biological response. As mating faces of all-ceramic joint must be highly conformed to reduce stress concentration, wear properties of flat surfaces are investigated in this study. Through wear tests at 2 MPa of contact pressure and 36 mm/s of sliding velocity, alumina and silicon carbide keep low wear rate, high hardness and smooth surface. Soft surface film was detected after the test in bovine serum. This suggests that boundary lubrication is effective to reduce wear in all-ceramic joint.
