An Experimental Study of a Diffuser Starting Characteristics for Simulating High-Altitude Environment by using a Liquid Rocket (액체로켓엔진 연소기를 이용한 고고도 환경 모사용 디퓨저 시동특성 연구)

  • Performance tests of a supersonic exhaust diffuser were conducted by using a liquid rocket engine for simulating high-altitude environment. The experimental setup consisted of a combustion chamber, a vacuum chamber and a diffuser. The combustion tests for simulating high-altitude environment were carried out at three cases by chamber pressure variation(26, 29, 32barg). The test results showed that the diffuser was started at all case and vacuum chamber pressures were approximately 140torr. The starting pressure using combustion gas was similar with that of cold gas, but the vacuum chamber pressure was relatively high because of high temperature in the vacuum chamber. The results of this test can be used as an essential database for the design of real-scale high-altitude simulation test facility in the future.

Variation of the Hemispheric Asymmetry of the Equatorial Ionization Anomaly with Solar Cycle

  • In solstices during the solar minimum, the hemispheric difference of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) intensity (hereafter hemispheric asymmetry) is understood as being opposite in the morning and afternoon. This phenomenon is explained by the temporal variation of the combined effects of the fountain process and interhemispheric wind. However, the mechanism applied to the observations during the solar minimum has not yet been validated with observations made during other periods of the solar cycle. We investigate the variability of the hemispheric asymmetry with local time (LT), altitude, season, and solar cycle using the electron density taken by the CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload satellite and the global total electron content (TEC) maps acquired during 2001-2008. The electron density profiles provided by the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate satellites during 2007-2008 are also used to investigate the variation of the hemispheric asymmetry with altitude during the solar minimum. During the solar minimum, the location of a stronger EIA moves from the winter hemisphere to the summer hemisphere around 1200-1400 LT. The reversal of the hemispheric asymmetry is more clearly visible in the F-peak density than in TEC or in topside plasma density. During the solar maximum, the EIA in the winter hemisphere is stronger than that in the summer hemisphere in both the morning and afternoon. When the location of a stronger EIA in the afternoon is viewed as a function of the year, the transition from the winter hemisphere to the summer hemisphere occurs near 2004 (yearly average F10.7 index = 106). We discuss the mechanisms that cause the variation of the hemispheric asymmetry with LT and solar cycle.

  • High reliability and minimization of operating cost are important problems for both engine-manufacturer and user in operation of gas-turbine engine, for which various performance diagnostics including a fault identification have been a major issue nowadays. Performance estimation in the off-design conditions, however, encounters problems of large errors and of poor convergence because of much required data to be evaluated. In this study, a diagnostics code of engine performance has been developed by using GPA(Gas Path Analysis). Quantitative performance deterioration of the turbo-shaft engine for SUAV has been estimated with altitude variation and is compared with that obtained by GSP code.

  • In this study, a performance model of the smart UAV propulsion system with ducts, tip jets and variable main nozzle, which has flight capability of the rotary wing mode for the take-off/landing and low speed forward flight as well as the fixed wing mode for high speed forward flight, has been newly developed With the proposed model, steady-state performance analysis was performed at various flight modes such as rotary wing mode, fixed wing mode, compound ing mode and altitude as well as at flight speed conditions. In investigation of performance analysis. it was noted that the operational capability of the propulsion system was limited due to the duct losses depending on each flight mode, and the limitation with the altitude variation case had much greater than that with the flight speed variation case.

Altitudinal Variation in Species Composition and Soil Properties of Banj Oak and Chir Pine Dominated Forests

  • The study was carried out in two different forest types viz., Banj oak and Chir pine forests to assess the variation in forest species composition and soil properties along altitudinal gradients in the Garhwal Himalayas. The results of the study showed that between the forests soil moisture was higher in Banj oak forest because of closed canopy and dense forest compared to Chir pine forest. The sand particles were reported higher in Banj oak forest which might be due to the addition of organic matter favouring coarse structure of soil, helping in holding maximum water in soils. However in the Chir pine forest low amount of soil organic matter and presence of clayey soil, develops soil compactness which reduces the penetration of water resulting in high soil bulk density. The higher accumulation of litter and presence of moisture in Banj oak forest favours higher nutrient level of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compared to Chir pine forest. The soil organic carbon also reduced with increasing altitude at both gradients. While bulk density has reverse trend with soil organic carbon in both the forests at different peaks of same region. In Banj oak forest, the highest density and total basal cover was reported 1,100 tree $ha^{-1}$ and 58.86 $m^2\;ha^{-1}$ respectively. However, the highest values of density and total basal cover of Chir pine forest was 560 tree$ha^{-1}$ and 56.94 $m^2\;ha^{-1}$ respectively. The total density and basal cover of both the forests reduced with increasing altitude. The study concludes that Banj oak forest has better nutrient cycling ability, well developed foest floor and has a greater protective and productive features compared to the Chir pine forest which is without lower vegetation cover and having only pine litter accumulation which does not allow any other species to grow.

PLASMA BLOB EVENTS OBSERVED BY KOMPSAT-1 AND DMSP F15 IN THE LOW LATITUDE NIGHTTIME UPPER IONOSPHERE

  • We report the plasma blob events that were observed from KOMPSAT-1 (2250 LT, 685-km altitude) and from DMSP F15 (2130 LT,840-km altitude) in the low-latitude ionosphere. The global distribution of blobs showed a season-longitudinal dependence similar to the distribution of the equatorial plasma bubbles, although they were observed along the ${\pm}$15 dip latitudes. The blobs drifted upward relative to the ambient plasmas, and the electron temperatures and H+ proportions were lower within the blobs compared to those in the background. These characteristics of the plasma blobs are very similar to the characteristics of the equatorial plasma bubbles. Then, we suggest that the blobs were originated from the lower altitudes by the mechanism that drives an upward drift of the plasma bubbles. The blob events did not occur in a correlated way with the magnetic activity or daily variation of the solar activity.

The feasible constant speed helical trajectories for propeller driven airplanes

  • The motion of propeller driven airplanes, flying at constant speed on ascending or descending helical trajectories is analyzed. The dynamical abilities of the airplane are shown to result in restrictions on the ranges of the geometrical parameters of the helical path. The physical quantities taken into account are the variation of air density with altitude, the airplane mass change due to fuel consumption, its load factor, its lift coefficient, and the thrust its engine can produce. Formulas are provided for determining all the airplane dynamical parameters on the trajectory. A procedure is proposed for the construction of tables from which the flyability of trajectories at a given angle of inclination and radius can be read, with the corresponding minimum and maximum speeds allowed, the final altitude reached and the amount of fuel burned. Sample calculations are shown for the Cessna 182, a Silver Fox like unmanned aerial vehicle, and the C-130 Hercules.

An Airborne Cycloidal Wind Turbine Mounted Using a Tethered Balloon

  • This study proposes a design for an airborne wind turbine generator. The proposed system comprises a cycloidal wind turbine adopting a cycloidal rotor blade system that is used at a high altitude. The turbine is mounted on a tethered balloon. The proposed system is relatively easier to be realized and stable. Moreover, the rotor efficiency is high, which can be adjusted using the blade pitch angle variation. In addition, the rotor is well adapted to the wind-flow direction change. This article proves the feasibility of the proposed system through a sample design for a wind turbine that produces a power of 30 kW. The generated wind power at 500 m height is nearly 3 times of that on the ground.

THE EFFECT OF ATMOSPHERIC SCATTERING AS INFERRED FROM THE ROCKET-BORNE UV RADIOMETER MEASUREMENTS

  • Radiometers in UV and visible wavelengths were onboard the Korean Sounding Rocket(KSR)-1 and 2 which were launched on June 4th and September 1st, 1993. These radiometers were designed to capture the solar radiation during the ascending period of the rocket flight. The purpose of the instrument was to measure the vertical profiles of stratospheric ozone densities. Since the instrument measured the solar radiation from the ground to its apogee, it is possible to investigate the altitude variation of the measured intensity and to estimate the effect of atmospheric scattering by comparing the UV and visible intensity. The visible channel was a reference because the 450-nm wavelength is in the atmospheric window region, where the solar radiation is transmitted through the atmosphere without being absorbed by other atmospheric gases. The use of 450-nm channel intensity as a reference should be limited to the altitude ranges above the certain altitudes, say 20 to 25km where the signals are not perturbed by atmospheric scattering effects.
