Possibility of applying unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and mapping software for the monitoring of waterbirds and their habitats

  • Background: Conventional bird observation methods are line survey or point count method by bare eyes or through binoculars or telescopes. But in this study, the possibility of monitoring waterbirds using drones beyond the conventional research methods was explored. It also describes the direction of producing and accumulating images of waterbird habitats as a method to efficiently determine changes in waterbird habitats. Results: From the study, it was concluded that waterbird monitoring using drones was a new monitoring technique which could be applied to the field and 26 kinds of waterbirds were observed. In the case of a drone with a single lens, it was difficult to identify objects because the size of the subject was too small at a certain altitude. In this case, zoom lens can be an alternative. It has also been verified that image analysis software can be used to accumulate images of waterbird habitats. Conclusions: If various kinds of advanced drones and cameras are used, it would be possible to monitor larger areas including the areas that are difficult for human access and to observe more waterbirds and wider habitats.

  • Resistance spot welding has been investigated to apply for manufacturing car bodies because of its high productivity. So quality of resistance spot weld is one of the major concerns for both automobile and aerospace industry. Current design trends in automotive manufacture have shifted emphasis to alternative lightweight materials in order to aid in producing vehicles with higher fuel efficiency and lower down the vehicle emission level for environmental control. There is increasing emphasis to provide lighter cars. Therefore there is an effort to use high strength steels such as HSLA, dual phase, in car body. However there is used in restricted because of difficulty in producing consistently high quality resistance spot welds. In this study, resistance spot welding schedules were developed to achieve acceptable welds with improved static mechanical properties. Improved resistance spot welding schedules were developed using post heating current to reduce the cooling rate, or in-process tempering to reduce the hardness of the weld produced. The effects of resistance spot welding process parameter on hardening fracture mode and static mechanical properties of the joints were determined.

저온용 R502 대체 냉매의 이론 및 실험적 평가 (Theoretical and Experimental Evaluation of R502 Alternatives in Low Temperature Applications)

  • R502 has been extensively used as a working fluid in transport refrigerating vehicles and low temperature refrigerating machines but is to be phased out by the end of 1995 due to ozone layer depletion problem. In this study, both theoretical cycle analysis and experiments were carried out to examine the best substitutes for R502. Theoretical results indicate that the alternatives available in the market today may replace R502 without significant changes in the system without suction line heat exchanger(SLHX). When the system contains a SLHX, however, COPs of the alternatives increase up to approximately 15~20% than those without the SLHX. But simultaneously, the discharge temperatures of the compressor also increrease significantly with the SLHX. Actual test results obtained from the experiment with a transport vehicle's refrigerator indicate the similar trend as those of the theoretical results. Especially, HFCs and their mixtures show lower discharge temperature than those of R502, which is one of the desirable features. Further research is needed to study the effect of the SLHX on the performance of the real machine as well as on the oil return for reliability of the system.

  • 컴퓨터와 더불어 멀티미디어의 발전은 가상현실이라는 신기술을 만들어 내게 하였고 가상현실 분야 중 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션 기술은 항공, 자동차, 의학, 스포츠, 교육, 패션 분야에 이르기까지 그 적용이 확대되고 있다 본 연구는 헤어스타일링 분야에서 기존의 2차원 헤어시뮬레이션의 개발 및 상용 현황과, 연구 단계에 있는 3차원 헤어스타일 시뮬레이션의 개발 현황을 살펴본다. 아울러 현재 개발된 3차원 헤어스타일 시뮬레이션이 상용화하기 위해서는 3D 시스템 부스의 조정, 저가 저화질의 카메라 개선 등의 문제점이 있음을 제시하였다. 이를 개선하기 위해서 object photography 방식에서 panoramic photography 방식의 전환, 중 고가의 고화질 카메라로의 대체들을 제안한다.

Cardiometabolic Effects of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Treatment Effects of Oral Appliance: An Updated Review for Dentists

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a relatively common, but greatly underdiagnosed sleep-related breathing disorder, characterized by recurrent collapse of the upper airway during sleep. OSA has been associated with a variety of cardiometabolic disease, such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, cardiac arrhythmia, cerebrovascular disease and metabolic dysfunction. Neurocognitive impairment, including excessive daytime sleepiness, increased risk of motor vehicle accidents, is also related to OSA. Sleep fragmentation and related arousals during sleep lead to intermittent hypoxia, sympathetic activation, oxidative stress, systemic inflammation and metabolic dysregulation which provide biological plausibility to this pathologic mechanism. Extensive studies demonstrated that OSA is a modifiable risk factor for the above mentioned diseases and oral appliances (OAs), although continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) is a first-line therapy of OSA, are not inferior to CPAP at least in mild OSA, and may be an alternative to CPAP in CPAP-intolerant subjects with OSA. The goal of this article is to provide a current knowledge of pathologic link between OSA and cardiovascular disease, focusing on intermittent hypoxia, sympathetic activation, oxidative stress and metabolic dysregulation. Then, previous epidemiologic studies will be reviewed to understand the causal relationship between OSA and cardiovascular disease. Finally, the effects of OAs will be updated via recent metaanalyses compared to CPAP.

  • 최근 대기오염 물질의 배출, 소음, 과도한 운용비용, 안전성 및 위험 문제 해결을 위한 신개념 항공 추진시스템 개발에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 특히, 기존 항공추진시스템의 효율향상과 연료소모율 감소, 수소나 태양에너지 등 신재생에너지를 이용한 친환경적인 추진시스템 개발, 전기추진과 핵추진 시스템 개발 등을 통한 추력대 중량비가 높은 고효율의 신개념 항공기 개발에 대한 다양한 연구를 수행하고 있다. 이러한 신개념의 항공기 개발을 위하여 두 개 이상의 동력원을 조합하여 추진력을 얻는 하이브리드 추진시스템의 개발이 하나의 대안이 될 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 미래의 친환경적 첨단 무인 항공기에 적용할 수 있는 하이브리드 추진시스템의 동향, 특징 및 개발방안, 발전방안 등을 고찰하였다.

  • 전 세계의 소비자들은 예전에 비해 외모, 건강 및 안락한 삶에 관심을 집중시키고 있다. 이와 같은 경향은 유효성분을 함유한 기능성화장품의 요구 또한 증대시키고 있다. 차별화된 제형을 이용한 감각적인 사용감이 구현된 처방은 실질적인 소비자 인지 수준의 화장품에 이용되고 있으며 그 결과로 화장품시장이 확대되고 있다. 이와 더불어 유효성분의 경피 전달을 통한 소비자 인지 수준의 제품을 개발하기 위해서 화장품 과학자는 첨단 의약품의 다양한 기술을 접목해야 한다. 다양한 경피 흡수 수단의 기술이 기능성 화장품에 사용되고 있다. 본 총설에서는 차세대 경피 전달 시스템으로서 큰 잠재력을 가진 경피 전달 시스템에 대해서 논하고자 한다.

  • This paper describes the use of fuzzy control and decision making to simulate the control of traffic flow at an intersection. To show the value of fuzzy logic as an alternative method for control of traffic environments. A traffic environment includes the lanes to and from an intersection, the intersection, vehicle traffic, and signal lights in the intersection. To test the fuzzy logic controller, a computer simulation was constructed to model a traffic environment. A typical cross intersection was chosen for the traffic environment, and the performance of the fuzzy logic controller was compared with the performance of two different types of conventional control. In the hardware verifications, fuzzy logic was used to control acceleration of a model train on a circular path. For the software experiment, the fuzzy logic controller proved better than conventional control methods, especially in the case of highly uneven traffic flow between different directions. On the hardware si e of the research, the fuzzy acceleration control system showed a marked improvement in smoothness of ride over crisp control.

  • The national need to establish a new stray current mitigation method to protect the underground metallic infrastructures in congested downtown area forced us to design and develop the distributed impressed current cathodic protection (DICCP) system. The main purpose of this system is to replace the stray current drainage bond methods, which is widely adopted by pipeline owners in Korea. Currently, forced drainage makes up about 85% of total drainage facilities installed in Korea because polarized drainage can neither drain perfectly the stray currents during normal operation of electric vehicle nor drain the reverse current during regenerative braking at all. The forced drainage, however, has been abused as an alternative cathodic protection system, which impresses currents from rails to the pipelines and accordingly uses the rails as anodes. As a result, it is necessary to consider a new method to both cathodically protect the pipelines and effectively drain the stray currents. In this paper, we describe the design parameters and installation schemes of DICCP system that can meet these demands.

  • PURPOSES : This study aimed to offer a greenhouse gases table to assist a road designer in calculating the greenhouse gases for a road environment when making a decision about an alternative road. METHODS : This study developed an operation mode table of greenhouse gases using the MOVES program. Similar factors for Korean vehicles and fuels are reflected in the MOVES program, which was made in the USA. Finally, a paired t-test was conducted to calculate the site data and MOVES data. Through these studies, a methodology was suggested for calculating carbon emissions based on various types of roads alignments. RESULTS : The site results for a passenger truck on the road were statistically significant when the vehicle speed was above 65 km/h. However, a future study will consider factors for various road alignments and vehicles. CONCLUSIONS : This study will contribute to the theoretical basis for reducing carbon emissions from roads by helping road designers make decisions about road alternatives in terms of the road environment.
