Objective: This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a water-soluble microencapsulation method for probiotic strains using gum Arabic (GA) and skim milk (SKM) over a three-month storage period following processing. Methods: Four strains of Pediococcus acidilactici (BYF26, BYF20, BF9, and BF14) that were typical lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from the chicken gut were mixed with different ratios of GA and SKM as coating agents before spray drying at an inlet temperature 140℃. After processing, the survivability and probiotic qualities of the strains were assessed from two weeks to three months of storage at varied temperatures, and de-encapsulation was performed to confirm the soluble properties. Finally, the antibacterial activity of the probiotics was assessed under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Results: As shown by scanning electron microscopy, spray-drying produced a spherical, white-yellow powder. The encapsulation efficacy (percent) was greatest for a coating containing a combination of 30% gum Arabic: 30% skim milk (w/v) (GA:SKM30) compared to lower concentrations of the two ingredients (p<0.05). Coating with GA:SKM30 (w/v) significantly enhanced (p<0.05) BYF26 survival under simulated gastrointestinal conditions (pH 2.5 to 3) and maintained higher survival rates compared to non-encapsulated cells under an artificial intestinal juices condition of pH 6. De-encapsulation tests indicated that the encapsulated powder dissolved in water while keeping viable cell counts within the effective range of 106 for 6 hours. In addition, following three months storage at 4℃, microencapsulation of BYF26 in GA:SKM30 maintained both the number of viable cells (p<0.05) and the preparation's antibacterial efficacy against pathogenic bacteria, specifically strains of Salmonella. Conclusion: Our prototype water-soluble probiotic microencapsulation GA:SKM30 effectively maintains LAB characteristics and survival rates, demonstrating its potential for use in preserving probiotic strains that can be used in chickens and potentially in other livestock.

Based on the Fire Service Act of mandatory provision, new buildings are strictly forced to use fire protection materials. Flame resistant EPS is one of those materials. Unlike conventional EPS that can be fused to make EPS ingot and be recycled for various purposes, flame resistant EPS waste cannot be recycled due to the presence of protective coating that is applied to increase the fire protection properties of EPS. A suitable alternative that can process large amount of flame resistant EPS wastes needs to be developed, and one of the possible alternative is to use them as construction materials. In this research, experiments were designed to observe whether the flame resistant EPS wastes can be utilized as partial replacements of fine aggregates in cement mortar. The replacement ratio of waste EPS was varied, and its effect on compressive strength and absorption capacity was investigated. According to the experimental results, both compressive strength and absorption capacity met the Korean Standard specification for cement bricks and blocks, indicating that flame resistant EPS wastes can be used for construction purposes.
Washed rice was coated by spraying aqueous dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) extracts at 20, 30, 40 $^{\circ}$Brix and dried at room temperature. The coating procedure was conducted 5 mL/min for 10min. Property changes in the dandelion coated rice and un-coated cooked rice were observed during 2 days of storage. Increasing the coating concentration was associated with lower color values (L, a value) and moisture contents. Sensory and texture properties generally decreased in the cooked rice coated with dandelion more than the control (non-coated rice). But, D-20(20 $^{\circ}$Brix of the dandelion concentration) resulted in better textural properties and sensory scores for hardness and overall acceptability in cooked rice. Compared to the control, the washed rice coated with 20 $^{\circ}$Brix for 0 and 2 days showed better quality in sensory activities, a lower gel consistency and better textural activities. It was concluded that the optimum coating ration of rice and added dandelion extract for cooking were 20 $^{\circ}$Brix and $5\%$ respectively, in proportion to the total weight of raw rice.

Aerosol Deposition (AD) is anovel way to fabricate bioactive ceramic coatings in biomedical implants and prostheses applications. In the present work, silicon-substituted hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings on commercially pure titanium were prepared by aerosol deposition using Si-HA powders. The incorporation of silicon in the HA lattice is known to improve the bioactivity of the HA, makingsilicon-substitute HA an attractive alternative to pure HA in biomedical applications. Si-HA powders with the chemical formula $Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6-x(SiO_4)x(OH)_2-x$, having silicon contents up to x=0.5 (1.4 wt%), were synthesized by solid-state reaction of $Ca_2P_2O_7$, $CaCO_3$, and $SiO_2$. The Si-HA powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR). The corresponding coatings were also analyzed by XRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA). The results revealed that a single-phase Si-HA was obtained without any secondary phases such as $\alpha$- or $\beta$-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) for both the powders and the coatings. The Si-HA coating was about $5\;{\mu}m$ thick, had a densemicrostructure with no cracks or pores. In addition, the proliferation and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity of MC3T3-E1 preosteoblast cells grown on the Si-HA coatings were significantly higher than those on the bare Ti and pure HA coating. These results revealed the stimulatory effects induced by siliconsubstitution on the cellular response to the HA coating.

Alternative technologies for sludge treatment and disposal need to be developed urgently because the amount of produced production has increased continuously. In this study, Pulsed Electric Fields (PEF) technique was applied for sludge solubilization and the performance was evaluated. The PEF equipped with electrodes coated by epoxy resin and teflon was inducted to the activated sludge suspension, and the effect of the coating materials on the solubilization was determined. In addition, the effect of the applied voltage on the solubilization yield was investigated as the applied voltage was increased from 6 to 12 and 15 kV. Sludge solubilization was not observed when the epoxy-coated electrode was used for PEF induction regardless of the applied voltage. However, sludge solubilization occurred when 12 and 15 kV were applied to the teflon-coated electrodes. The MLSS decreased to 9%, and the soluble-COD increased to 496% when the applied voltage was 15 kV. But sludge solubilization did not happen under 6 kV condition. The corona discharge was observed at applied voltages of 12 and 15 kV, (Ed- sorry but I cannot understand the following highlight) but if 6 kV, strongly indicating that the corona discharge make the sludge solubilized, which suggests that the critical voltage for sludge solubilization lies between 6 and 12 kV. Consequently, proper selection of electrode-coating materials and the applied voltage of PEF could lead to sludge solubilization by corona discharge.
CVD diamond tools are becoming more widely used in industry as an economic alternative to polycrystalline diamond (PCD) for machining non-ferrous and non-metallic materials. Although CVD diamond-sheet tools have been on the market for several years, diamond-coated carbide inserts have become available only recently, with the successful resolution of long-standing adhesion problems. Diamond coating morphology on the rake surface of the tool affects chip formation favorably, whereas a microscopically rough, faceted morphology on the flank surface of the tool produces a rough workpiece finish. Workpiece finish can be improved by using a coated tool with a larger nose radius. The tool life provided by diamond-coated tools(~30 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thick) can meet or exceed that of PCD tools, depending on the characteristics of the workpiece material. When using diamond-coated carbide tools in milling, a sharp-edged PCD tool should be used in the wiper position of the cutter to minimize workpiece roughness and burr formation.

As an alternative bipolar plate material for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), TiN-coated 316 stainless was evaluated in terms of electrical contact resistance and water contact angle. Performance and lifetime of the TiN-coated 316 bipolar plates were measured in comparison with those of graphite and bare 316 bipolar plates. At a cell voltage of 0.6 V, current density of the single cells using graphite, AISI 316, and TiN/316 bipolar plates was 996, 796, and $896mA/cm^2$, respectively. By coating 316 stainless steel with TiN layer, performance degradation rate determined to be the voltage degradation rate at a cell voltage of 0.6 V was reduced from 2.3 to 0.43 mV/h.

We present a simple process for the fabrication of high performance transparent conducting films that contain single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) noncovalently coated with an ultrathin titania layer. The hydrophobic interactions between nanotube surfaces and the acetylacetone (acac) ligands used to stabilize the $TiO_2$ precursor provide an interesting alternative method for noncovalently coating the SWCNTs with a titania layer. The ultrathin titania layer on SWCNTs prevented the oxidation of functionalized SWCNTs at high temperatures, and protected against water molecule absorption.

Ultimate objective of industrial hygiene is the prevention of health impairment that may result from exposure to chemicals at workplaces. This implies the definition of permissible levels of exposure, that is, levels that according to the present status of knowledge are estimated to cause no adverse health effects during the lifetime of the workers, and the regular assessment of the possible health risk associated with exposure by comparing the current or the integrated exposure with the permissible exposure limits. Workers in solvent thinner-using occupation environment might be highly exposed to VOCs(volatile organic compounds) because solvent thinner has been used extensively such as painting, spraying, degreasing, coating and so on in Korea. The purpose of this study was to recognize, evaluate and propose the alternative control the VOCs from solvent thinner-using workplace.
