  • This paper presents the aerodynamic coefficient modeling with a new model structure explored by Least Squares using Modulating Function Technique (LS/MFT) for an F-16XL airplane using wind tunnel data supplied by NASA/LRC. A new model structure for aerodynamic coefficient was proposed, one that considered all possible combination terms of angle of attack ${\alpha}$(t) and ${\alpha}$(t) given number of harmonics K, and was compared with Pearson's model, which has the same number of parameters as the new model. Our new model harmonic results show better agreement with the physical data than Pearson's model. The number of harmonics in the model was extended to 6 and its parameters were estimated by LS/MFT. The model output of lift coefficient with K=6 correspond reasonably well with the physical data. In particular, the estimation performances of four aerodynamic coefficients were greatly improved at high frequency by considering all harmonics included in the input${\alpha}$(t), and by using the new model. In addition, the importance of each parameter in the model was analyzed by parameter reduction errors. Moreover, the estimation of three parameters, i.e., amplitude, phase and frequency, for a pure sinusoid and a finite sum of sinusoids- using LS/MFT is investigated.

  • Comparative liquid chromatographic enantiomer separation of ${\alpha}$-amino acids, their esters and primary amino compounds was performed using two chiral stationary phases (CSPs) prepared by covalently bonding (+)-(18-crown-6)-2,3,11,12-tetracarboxylic acid (18-C-6-TA) of the same chiral selector. In general, the separation factors and resolution factors for these analytes on CSP 1 were greater than on CSP 2, while these capacity factors on CSP 2 were quite greater than on CSP 1. Except for leucine methyl ester and phenylalanine methyl ester, the elution orders of all analytes including ${\alpha}$-amino ${\alpha}$-alkyl acids and phenylglycine alkyl esters on CSP 1 are identical to those on CSP 2. This study showed that different connecting structures for these two CSPs might influence their ability to resolve the analytes depending on their structures related to the chiral recognition mechanism.

  • A study on calcination and reduction of AUC(ammonium uranyl carbonate, (NH4)4UO2(CO3)3) has been carried out by using TG-DTA in N2, air and H2 atmospheres, respectively. Phases of various intermediate obtained during thermal analysis of AUC in different atmospheres were confirmed by XRD. Powder characteristics of each intermediate were investigated by measuring particle size and specific surface area, and also observed by SEM. As a results, regardless of applied atmosphere AUC was calcined into amorphous UO3, which was converted to $\alpha$-U3O8 Via $\alpha$-UO3 in both H2 and N2 atmosphere, but directly into $\alpha$-UO3 in air atmosphere. Further reduction of U3O8 was only detectable in hydrogen atmosphere. During calcination and reduction, average particle size was reduced to less than 30% of original value without morphology change. Specific surface area was dramatically increased with release of NH3, CO2 and H2O from AUC powder and reached maximum value around 25$0^{\circ}C$, and then gradually decreased with the increase of temperature due to sintering effect of uranium oxides such as UO3 and U3O8. It was also found that the change of average crystallite size and pore size were closely related to the changes of specific surface area of uranium oxides.

  • A stirling engine is a mechanism used to convert heat to power and operates on a closed regenerative thermodynamic cycle with compression and expansion of the working fluid at different temperature. The performance of a stilting cycle machine is a function of six independent parameters, namely; (1) speed N(r.p.m), (2) pressure of the working fluid p(Pa), (3) ratio of the temperature in the compression and expansion space ${\tau}(=T_C/T_E)$ , (4) ratio of the swept volumes in these two spaces K, (5) phase angle $\alpha$ and (6) dead volume ratio X. This paper describes the procedure and presents the results of computations carried out to establish the optimum combinations of these six parameters for maximum engine output for the machine acting as a prime mover, over a combined temperature range from $300^{\circ}K$ to $1000^{\circ}K$ and dead volume ratio X ranging from 0.1 to 2.0. The output of a stilting cycle machine can be expressed in terms of nondimensional power in several different ways. Four methods were studied in detail, the parameters optimized and design charts and engine power charts prepared. The results of this paper may be useful as a guide to the likely effects on the performance of some of the important design parameters and regenerator design.

  • Microstructure of the bell made with Cu-Sn alloys was examined by optical and scanning electron microscope and that analyzed quantitatively with image analyzer. Also acoustic characteristics of the bells were measured in detail by using FFT type power spectrum analyzer. ${\alpha}-single$ phases of large grains only were observed in Cu-5%Sn alloy. However mixed structure of primary ${\alpha}-phase$ and eutectoid of ${\alpha}+{\delta}%_o$ was existed in the Cu-Sn alloys with more than 9%Sn. Also the area fraction of eutectoid phases gradually increased with an increased Sn content. From the result of acoustic test, it was found that frequency and tonal intensity decreased with the increased Sn content from 5%Sn to 11%Sn, and those were rather increased with further increase of that. The lowest frequency and tonal intensity were showed in Cu-11%Sn, and porosity decreased considerably frequency and tonal intensity of the bells.

  • In this paper, we propose one unsupervised classification technique using the degree of polarization (DoP) and the co-polarized phase-difference (CPD) statistics, instead of the entropy and alpha. It is shown that the DoP is closely related to the entropy, and the CPD to the alpha. The DoP explains the feature how much the effect of multiple reflections is contained. Hence, the DoP could be used as an important factor for classifying classes. The CPD can also be computed from the measured Mueller matrix elements. For the smooth surface scattering, the CPD is about $0^{\circ}$, and for dihedral-type scattering, the CPD is about $180^{\circ}$. A DoP-CPD diagram with appropriate boundaries between six different classes is developed based on the SAR image. The classification results are compared with the existing Entropy-alpha diagram as well as the IPL-AirSAR polarimetric data. The technique may have capability to classify an SAR image into six major classes; a bare surface, a village, a crown-layer short vegetation canopy, a trunk-layer short vegetation canopy, a crown-layer forest, and a trunk-dominated forest. Based on the DoP and CPD analysis, a simple three-component decomposition technique was also proposed.

  • TiC ceramic particulate-reinforced titanium matrix composites were fabricated and the resultant densification, microstructure, and static and dynamic mechanical properties were studied. Comparing Ti with TiH₂powders as host materials for TiC ceramic reinforcement by pressureless vacuum sintering, TiH₂-started composites showed better sinterability and resistance to both elastic and plastic deformation than Ti-started ones. When TiH₂and TiH₂-45 vol.%TiC samples were hot pressed, TiH₂matrices transformed to alpha prime Ti and alpha Ti phase, respectively. It is interpreted that the diffusion of an alpha stabilizer carbon from TiC into the matrix is one of the plausible reasons far such a microstructural difference. The 0.2% offset yield strengths of the hot pressed TiH₂and TiH₂-45 vol.%TiC samples were 1008 and 1446 MPa, respectively, in a static compressive mode (strain rate of 1×$10^{-3}$/s). Dynamic compressive strengths of the samples were 1600 and 2060 MPa, respectively, at a strain rate of 4×10³/s.

  • [ ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ ] nanopowders were fabricated by the thermal decomposition and synthetic of Ammonium Aluminum Carbonate Hydroxide (AACH). Crystallite size of 5 to 8 nm were fabricated when reaction temperature of AACH was low, $8^{\circ}C$, and the highest $[NH_4{^+}][AlO(OH)_n{(SO_4){^-}}_{3-n/2}][HCO_3]$ ionic concentration to pH of the Ammonium Hydrogen Carbonate (AHC) aqueous solution was 10. The phase transformation fem $NH_4Al(SO_4)_2$, rhombohedral $(Al_2(SO_4)_3)$, amorphous-, ${\theta}-,\;{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ was examined at each temperature according to the AACH. A Time-Temperature-Transformation (TTT) diagram for thermal decomposition in air was determined. Homogeneous, spherical nanopowders with a particle size of 70 nm were obtained by firing the 5 to 8 m crystallites, which had been synthesized from AACH at pH 10 and $8^{\circ}C,\;at\;1150^{\circ}C$ for 3 h in air.

  • A novel strategy was developed for isolating suppressors from sporulation-deficient mutants. The mutation in the BCY1 gene, which codes for the regulatory subunit of cAMP-dependent protein kinase, when homozygous, results in diploids being meiosis and sporulation deficient. Two plasmids, YCp-MAT.alpha. and YEp-SPOT7-lacZ, were introduced into MAT.alpha. BCY1$\^$+/ or MAT.alpha. bcy1 haploid cells. The transformant of the BCY1$\^$+/ haploid cell produced .betha.-galactosidase under nutrient starvation, but the bcy1 transformant did not. Using this system, the mutagenesis experiment performed on the bcy1 transformant strain resulted in a number of sporulation mutants that produced .betha.-galactosidase under nutrient starvation. One complementation group, sob1, was identified from the isoalted suppressor mutants and characterized as a single recessive mutation by tetrad analysis. Genetic analysis revealed that the sob1 mutation suppressed the sporulation deficiency, the failure to arrest at the G1 phase of the cell cecle, and the sensitivity to heat or nitrogen starvation caused by the bcy1 mutation. However, the sob1 mutation did not suppress the sporulation deficiency of ime1 and of ime2 diploids. These results suggest that the sob1 mutation affects a gene which functions as a downstream regulator in both meiosis and cell cycle regulation.
