  • The introduction of osseointegrated dental implants in dentistry brought about a new era in everyday dental practice. For the past 50 years, prosthetic restoration with implant-supported prosthesis has developed into a viable and predictable treatment option. Alongside the increasing use of dental implants is the occurrence of many complications during implant placement (surgery), in the mechanical or prosthetic problem, and in the biological aspect. In particular, abutment or screw fracture as one of the mechanical complications can put the dentist in a tight spot in a clinical situation. It is hard to remove the fractured abutment and screw to restore it properly. Therefore, it is very important that clinicians consider possible complications in advance and make an appropriate treatment plan. We discuss cases of abutment fracture and mechanical/prosthetic complications together with the causes and solutions.

  • Void fraction has been measured for the gas-liquid cocurrent slug flow in 8mm vertical acrylic tube using an optical method. Bubble speed, length and period could be measured with the two sets of laser-infrared sensor modules mounted 25mm apart alongside the tube, which were designed to detect variation of light intensities with a time delay when two parallel laser beams were refracted successively by a passing bubble. It was found that the results were in good agreement with the previous studies in the literature suggesting that the method used in this study were sound and accurate.

  • A new fluidized bed heat exchanger for exhaust gas heat recovery is developed. Compared to the existing ones, the present heat exchanger system is featured by the particle fluidization method which does not depend on conventionally used baffle plate with holes and by the multiple downcomer tubes to extract heat energy from hot particle during the time particles moves down to be fed again to the hot gas line. Particles are introduced to the main hot gas stream alongside the pipe circumference. The heat exchanger performance and pressure drop are evaluated through experiments for the present gas-to-water heat exchanger system.

  • In this paper, we evaluate the feasibility of a motion-based interaction for image browsing in the mobile device. We present the design of a motion-based interface and a navigation scheme. A designed interaction scheme was evaluated in a usability experiment alongside the conventional button-based interaction for image browsing. After enough training of user, the usability and the user task performance of the motion based interaction were significantly increased, approaching those of the button based interaction.

  • Pseudoaneurysm of the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) has been reported as a rare complication of RVOT reconstruction performed using conduit replacement or patch repair. Rarely, it may present alongside symptoms secondary to the compression of adjoining mediastinal structures. We report the case of a patient who developed a symptomatic RVOT pseudoaneurysm one month after a total correction of tetralogy of Fallot. In the present case, superior vena cava syndrome was caused by compression of the superior vena cava, which was a very unusual presentation.

  • Starting as a glutamate producer, Corynebacterium glutamicum has played a variety of roles in the industrial production of amino acids, one of the most important areas of white biotechnology. From shortly after its genome information became available, C. glutamicum has been applied in various production processes for value-added chemicals, fuels, and polymers, as a key organism in industrial biotechnology alongside the surprising progress in systems biology and metabolic engineering. In addition, recent studies have suggested another potential for C. glutamicum as a synthetic biology platform chassis that could move the new era of industrial microbial biotechnology beyond the classical field. Here, we review the recent progress and perspectives in relation to C. glutamicum, which demonstrate it as one of the most promising and valuable workhorses in the field of industrial biotechnology.

  • Objective : The objective of this study is to observe the effect of anti-inflammatory herbal acupuncture on the metatarsal tendinitis. Methods : After the application of herbal acupuncture, the VAS and Baumgaertner's nine point scale were assessed. If there were any restraints on the ROM, ROM was also assessed alongside the previous scales. Results : 1. The pain was reduced significantly according to the VAS scale. 2. As to the assessment of satisfaction in treatment, by the Baumgaertner's nine point scale, 2 out of 3 cases scored Excellent, and one case scored Good. Conclusions : The anti-inflammatory herbal acupuncture is effective to the metatarsal tendinitis, and can be used more frequently in the clinical practices.

  • In this paper, some novel discrete formulations for stabilizing the mixed finite element method Q1-Q0 (bilinear velocity and constant pressure approximations) are introduced and discussed for the generalized Stokes problem. These are based on stabilizing discontinuous pressure approximations via local jump operators. The developing idea consists in a reduction of terms in the local jump formulation, introduced earlier, in such a way that stability and convergence properties are preserved. The computer implementation aspects and numerical evaluation of these stabilized discrete formulations are also considered. For illustrating the numerical performance of the proposed approaches and comparing the three versions of the local jump methods alongside with the global jump setting, some obtained results for two test generalized Stokes problems are presented. Numerical tests confirm the stability and accuracy characteristics of the resulting approximations.

  • Both a Finite Volume and a Discrete Vortex technique to solve the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations have been employed to study the air flow around long-span bridge decks. The implementation and calibration of both methods is described alongside a quasi-3D extension added to the DVM solver. Applications to the wind engineering of bridge decks include flow simulations at different angles of attack, calculation of aerodynamic derivatives and fluid-structure interaction analyses. These are being presented and their specific features described. If a numerical method shall be employed in a practical design environment, it is judged not only by its accuracy but also by factors like versatility, computational cost and ease of use. Conclusions are drawn from the analyses to address the question of whether computer simulations can be practical design tools for the wind engineering of bridge decks.
