Some REE ore deposits are located in the middle part the of Korean peninsula. Geotectonically, the REE ore deposits situated on the Kyemyeongsan Formation of northern margin of the Okcheon geosynclinal belt and in the transitional zone between Kyeonggi massif and the Okcheon belt, with a deep-seated fracture separating the two tectonic units. The Kyemyeongsan Formation are different in lithology and metamorphic grade from the Gyeonggi massif and the Okcheon super group. The sequence of Kyemyeongsan Formation is dominantly composed of acidic metavolcanic and volcaniclastic rocks associated with alkaline igneous rocks which are related to volcano-plutonism. The REE ore deposits contain mainly Ce-La, Ta-Nb, Y, Y-Nd and Nd-Th group minerals. More than 15 RE and REE minerals have been found in the deposits, such as allanite, fergusonite, thorite bestnaesite, euxenite, polyclase, monazite, columbite, (Nb)-rutile, okanoganite, sphene, zircon, illmenite and some other unknown minerals. According to the characteristics of the mineral association, the REE ore deposits may be divided into 4 ore types; Zircon-REE, allanite-REE, feldspar-REE and fluorite-REE type. The Sm-Nd isochron age of the REE ore is 330 Ma, and the Sm-Nd model age is 1.11 Ga with ${\varepsilon}_{Nd(t)}$ being - 2.9. This data suggest that the REE ore deposit was formed in the early Carboniferous, and the ore-forming material came from the mantle. The REE ores show distinct light REE enrichment with strong negative Eu anomaly. The REE patterns of schistose rocks from Kyemyeongsan Formation are similar to felsic volcanics from rifts or back arc basins in or near continental crust. The genesis of the REE ore deposit is quite complicated. Different geologic processes are displayed in the studied area; sedimentation, volcanic activity, metamorphism and hydrothermal replacement. Alkali granite has suffered extensive post-magmatic metasomatism of a high temperature to produce alkali metasomatites. Geochemical charateristics show that metasomatism of alkaline fluid was probably the dominant ore-forming process in Chungju district.

The object of this research is to produce alkali activated fly ash-cement using low calcium fly ash as substitute for portland cement. The experimental program included activation of fly ash by a strong base(NaOH) at different concentration, temperature, and liquid-to-fly ash ratios. To achieve for higher compressive strength of the hardened product, sodium meta silicate is added to the alkaline solution. From the factors considered on strength development, the ratio of liquid/fly ash, the activator concentration and temperature always result to be significative factors. The optimization studied show that the alkaline solution concentration of $NaOH(210g)+Na_2SiO_3{\cdot}9H_2O(30g)+H_2O=1L$ at $50^{\circ}C$ produces the best alkali activation effect for the low calcium fly ash. SEM and XRD patterns showed that the components of alkali-activated fly ash consist mainly of mullite, quartz and amorphous aluminosilicate.
Manganese dioxide ($MnO_2$) is one of the most important cathode materials used in both aqueous and non-aqueous batteries. The $MnO_2$ polymorph that is used for lithium primary batteries is synthesized either by electrolytic (EMD-$MnO_2$) or chemical methods (CMD-$MnO_2$). Commonly, electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) is used as a cathode mixture material for dry-cell batteries, such as a alkaline batteries, zinc-carbon batteries, rechargeable alkaline batteries, etc. The characteristics of lithium/manganese-dioxide primary cells fabricated with EMD-$MnO_2$ powders as cathode were compared as a function of the parameters of a manufacturing process. The flexible primary cells were prepared with EMD-$MnO_2$, active carbon, and poly vinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder (10 wt.%) coated on an Al foil substrate. A cathode sheet with micro-porous showed a higher discharge capacity than a cathode sheet compacted by a press process. As the amount of EMD-$MnO_2$ increased, the electrical conductivity decreased and the electrical capacity increased. The cell subjected to heat-treatment at $200^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr showed a high discharge capacity. The flexible primary cell made using the optimum conditions showed a capacity and an average voltage of 220 mAh/g and 2.8 V, respectively, at $437.5{\mu}A$.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of EMD on demineralized root surface using human periodontal ligament cells and compare the effects of root conditioning materials(tetracycline(TCN), EDTA). Material and Methods: Dentin slices were prepared from the extracted teeth and demineralized with TCN and EDTA. Demineralized dentin slices were incubated at culture plate with 25, 50 and $100{\mu}g/ml$ concentration of EMD. Cell attachment, alkaline phosphatase activity test, protein synthesis assay and scanning electronic microscopic examination were done. Results: Cells were attached significantly higher in EMD treated group at 7 and 14 days. Cell numbers were significantly higher in EMD treated group. Alkaline phosphatase activity was significantly higher in EMD treated group at 7 and 14 days. Protein synthesis was significantly higher in EMD treated group at 7 and 14 days. Conclusion: Enamel matrix derivatives enhance the biologic activities of human periodontal ligament cells on demineralized root surface and its effects are dependent on the concentration of EMD.

Purpose: Ti-6Al-4V alloy is widely used as an implant material because of its good biocompatibility and good mechanical property compared with commercial pure titanium. Otherwise, toxicity of aluminum and vanadium in vivo has been reported. Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloy is recently developed in the R&D Center for Ti and Special Alloys and it was reported that this alloy has high mechanical strength, no cytotoxicity and similar biocompatibility to commercial pure titanium, but many studies are needed for its clinical use. In these experiment, we carried out different surface treatment on each Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloy disks, then cultured cell on it and assessed biological response. Materials and Methods: cpTi, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloy disks were prepared and carried out sandblasting and acid etching (SLA) or alkali-heat treatment (AH) on the Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloy disks. We cultured primary rat calvarial cells on each surface and assessed early cell attachment and proliferation by scanning electron microscopy, cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase activity. Result: The rates of cell proliferation on the cpTi, Ti-8Ta-3Nb AH disks were higher than others (p<0.05) and alkaline phosphatase activity was significantly enhanced on the Ti-STa-8Nb AH disks(p<0.05). Conclusion: Most favorable cell response was shown on the Ti-8Ta-3Nb AH surfaces. It is supposed that alkali-heat treatment of the Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloy could be induced earlier bone healing and osseointegration than smooth surface.
Hydroxyapatite (HAp) and biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) nano powders were synthesized using the microwave-assisted synthesis process dependent on pH and microwave irradiation time. The average size of a powder was less than 100 nm in diameter. Through in-vitro cytotoxicity tests by an extract dilution method, the HAp and BCP nano powders have shown to be cytocompatible for L-929 fibroblast cells, osteoblastlike MG-63 cells and osteoclast-like Raw 264.7 cells. The activation of osteoblast was estimated by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity. When the HAp and BCP were treated to MG-63 cells, alkaline phosphatase activities increased on day 3, compared with those of the untreated cells. Also, the collagen fibers increased when the HAp and BCP powders suspension were treated to MG-63 cells, compared to those of the untreated cells. Quantitative alizarin red S mineralization assays showed a trend toward increasing mineralization in osteoblast cultured with powder suspension. In conclusion, hydroxyapatite and biphasic calcium phosphate appeared to be a bone graft substitute material with optimal biocompatibility and could be further applied to clinical use as an artificial bone graft substitute.

Purpose: This study is designed to evaluate biocompatibility of three types of absorbable collagen GBR membrane in vitro. Material and Method: The human PDL fibroblasts culture was obtained through typical way and the cells used in the experiment was forth passage. The membranes examined were Experimental group A, B, C. All the 3-experimental groups were made of bovine pericardium and the membranes were excised into 5$\times$5mm respectively. The samples of the membranes were fixed on the 24-well plate with the double-sided adhesive tape. Then, 2ml of cell suspension which included $2{\times}10^4$cells was inoculated into the 24-well plate, and the cells were cultured for 1 week. Cellular viability and the alkaline phosphatase activity were measured with ELISA. The membranes in the culture were processed to examine with SEM. Results: The survival rate was highest in control and Experimental group A is the next, group B and group C in order of the value. The values are analyzed for statistical difference using Wilcoxon test. All the values of experimental groups are significantly lower than those of control, and the vaules among the experimental groups significantly differ from each other. Alkaline phosphatase level was identical order with the viable cell rate. SEM examination revealed that the PDL fibroblasts adherent on culture dish (control) and group A were spindle-shaped, but on group B and C, the cells were round-shaped without processes.
These experiments were made to investigate the characteristics of cocoon pupas. The proximate composition and fatty acids were analyzed. In order to eliminate the unfavorable odor of cocoon pupas, alkaline treatment and extraction of fat were conducted. The results were as follows. 1) The unfavorable odor can be eliminated through the extraction of fat. Boiling with n-hexane for 1 hour was the best. 2) The cocoon pupas were contaminated with $10^8$ bacterial counts/g at the first eating state. When they were stored at room temperature for 6 days, bacterial counts did not increase inure than $10^8$, but they were putrefacted with bad odor. 3) The powder of defatted cocoon pupas prepared for food material contained around 1.3% moisture, 76.0% protein, 0.8% crude fat, and 4.8% ash. 4) It was not efficient to eliminate unfavorable odor by alkaline treatment. 5) The fatty acids of cocoon pupas are composed of 0.35% myristic acid, 20.90% palmitic acid, 0.5% palmitoleic acid, 7.11% stearic acid, 32.20% oleic acid, 5.48% linoleic acid and 30.31% linolenic acid.
Gallium is an important material and is used by industry of oxide semi-conductor and LED chip. However, the most of the gallium-containing waste resources became outflow abroad and the most of which is imported from oversea by following technical problem and low circulation rate. In this research, the recovery of high purity Gallium metal from Gallium scrap, which containing about 30% of Gallium, was investigated by using hydro-metallurgical process. As pretreatment, the Gallium scrap was pulverized and leached by strong acid such as hydro chloric acid. At the leached solution, Indium was separated as an Indium sponge by substitution reaction and then Gallium and Zinc hydroxide separated and filtrated using strong alkaline solution such as sodium hydroxide by precipitation method. Also, Gallium metal and Zinc metal was recovered by electrowinning method. To make an electrolytic solution, Gallium and Zinc hydroxide was leached by strong alkaline solution. Finally, High purity Gallium metal was recovered by vacuum refining process to remove the Zinc impurity.

Many researches on alkali-activated concrete that does not need the presence of cement as a binder have been carried out recently. Instead, the source of material such as fly ash and blast slag, that are rich in Silicon(Si) and Aluminium(Al), are activated by alkaline liquids to produce the binder. Hence concrete with no cement is effect reduction of CO$_2$ gas. In this study, we investigated the influence of the workability and compressive strength of mortar on water reducing agent, alkaline activator and curing method in oder to develop cementless blast slag based alkali-activated mortar. In view of the results, we found out that the flowability of mortar was lowered as increasing to mole concentration of NaOH, but not large the loss of flowability to 9M NaOH, most of water reducing agent was not effect. The compressive strength was improved as increasing to mole concentration of NaOH, was the most effect in 9M NaOH. The curing temperature and curing conditions on compressive strength of blast slag based alkali-activated mortar didn't influence.
