  • Dynamic responses of a laminated composite cantilever beam under a harmonic are investigated in this study. The governing equations of problem are derived by using the Lagrange procedure. The Timoshenko beam theory is considered and the Ritz method is implemented in the solution of the problem. The algebraic polynomials are used with the trivial functions for the Ritz method. In the solution of dynamic problem, the Newmark average acceleration method is used in the time history. In the numerical examples, the effects of load parameter, the fiber orientation angles and stacking sequence of laminas on the dynamic responses of the laminated beam are investigated.

  • This paper presents an efficient numerical method for computation of eigenpair derivatives for the real symmetric eigenvalue problem with distinct and multiple eigenvalues. The method has very simple algorithm and gives an exact solution. Furthermore, it saves computer storage and CPU time. The algorithm preserves the symmetry and band of the matrices, allowing efficient computer storage and solution techniques. Thus, the algorithm of the proposed method will be inserted easily in the commercial FEM codes. Results of the proposed method for calculating the eigenpair derivatives are compared with those of Rudisill and Chu's method and Nelson's method which is efficient one in the case of distinct natural frequencies. As an example to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method in the case of distinct eigenvalues, a cantilever plate is considered. The design parameter of the cantilever plate is its thickness. For the eigenvalue problem with multiple natural frequencies, the adjacent eigenvectors are used in the algebraic equation as side conditions, they lie adjacent to the m (multiplicity of multiple natural frequency) distinct eigenvalues, which appear when design parameter varies. As an example to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method in the case of multiple natural frequencies, a cantilever beam is considered. Results of the proposed method fDr calculating the eigenpair derivatives are compared with those of Bailey's method (an amendation of Ojalvo's work) which finds the exact eigenvector derivatives. The design parameter of the cantilever beam is its height. Data is persented showing the amount of CPU time used to compute the first ten eigenpair derivatives by each method. It is important to note that the numerical stability of the proposed method is proved.

  • This work shows that it is possible to obtain information about more than one parameter from acoustic field information. A variety of ultrasonic Lamb wave modes were utilized to reconstruct thickness and density of an isotropic plate. An image reconstruction of one parameter (thickness of a plate) was carried out for four cases, i.e., the lowest symmetrical and anti symmetrical modes, and the fastest symmetrical and anti symmetrical Lamb waves among multiple modes. For two parameter reconstructions (thickness and density), the image processing was performed using the lowest symmetrical and antisymmetrical modes simultaneously. In this work, a modified version of algebraic reconstruction technique (ART), which is a form of finite-series expansion method, was employed to reconstruct the ultrasonically computed tomographic images. Results from several sample geometries are presented.

  • In this paper, we present and analyze a LQ (Linear Quadratic) inverse optimal state-consensus protocol for continuous-time multi-agent systems with undirected graph topology. By Lyapunov analysis of the state-consensus error dynamics, we show the sufficient conditions on the algebraic connectivity of the graph to guarantee LQ inverse optimality and closed-loop stability. A more relaxed stability condition is also provided in terms of the algebraic connectivity. Finally, a formation control protocol for multiple mobile robots is proposed based on the target LQ inverse optimal consensus protocol, and the simulation results are provided to verify the performance of the proposed LQ inverse formation control method.

  • In this paper, we presented a new algebraic iterative algorithm for the optimal control of the nonlinear systems. The algorithm is based on two steps. The first step transforms nonlinear optimal control problem into a sequence of linear optimal control problem using the quasilinearization method. In the second step, TPBCP(two point boundary condition problem) is solved by algebraic equations instead of differential equations using the new integral operational matrix of BPF(block pulse functions). The proposed algorithm is simple and efficient in computation for the optimal control of nonlinear systems and is less error value than that by the conventional matrix. In computer simulation, the algorithm was verified through the optimal control design of synchronous machine connected to an infinite bus.

  • A modern MEMS resonator is a micro-scale structure operated over a high frequency range. In order to predict its resonant behavior in a design process, High-frequency response analysis (Hi-FRA) is demanded. Algebraic substructuring (AS) is known as a fast numerical technique to construct an eigenspace for FR and frequency sweep (FS) algorithm efficiently solves the frequency response system projected on the eigenspace. However, the existing FS algorithm using AS is developed for low-FRA, say over the range 1Hz-2KHz. In this work, we extend the FS algorithm using AS for FRA over an arbitrary frequency range. Therefore, it can be efficiently applied to systems operated at a high frequency, say over the range 230MHz-250MHz. The success of the proposed method is demonstrated by Hi-FRA of a checkerboard resonator.

  • In this paper, the selection method of weighting matrices in the discrete-time LQ problem are suggested in order to improve the guaranteed stability margins, i.e. the gain and phase margins. The asymptotic properties of the solution of the algebraic Riccati equations are investigated by using the closed form solution of the difference Riccati equations. It is shown that the solution of the algebraic Riccati equations monotonically increases as the state weighting matrix Q or the control weighting matrix R increase. The increasing rate of the solution is shown to be much less than that of R for large R. It is also proven that the guaranteed stability margins increases as the ratio between Q and R decreases.

  • In this paper a new approach to obtain the solution of the linear-quadratic Gaussian control problem for singularly perturbed discrete-time stochastic systems is proposed. The alogorithm proposed is based on exploring the previous results that the exact solution of the global discrete algebraic Riccati equations is found in terms of the reduced-order pure-slow and pure-fast nonsymmetric continuous-time algebraic Riccati equations and, in addition, the optimal global Kalman filter is decomposed into pure-slow and pure-fast local optimal filters both driven by the system measurements and the system optimal control input. It is shown that the optimal linear-quadratic Gaussian control problem for singularly perturbed linear discrete systems takes the complete decomposition and parallelism between pure-slow and pure-fast filters and controllers.
