Estimation of Site Index and Stem Volume Equations for Larix leptolepis Stand in Jinan, Chonbuk (전북 진안 낙엽송 임분의 지위지수 및 간재적식 추정)

  • The objectives of this study were to derive site index and stem volume prediction equation based on stem analysis data for Larix leptolepis in Jinan region. The function for site index was developed by algebraic difference equation method. Polymorphic site index family curves with base age of 40 were presented based on the Schumacher height equation. The best stem volume prediction equation was suggested as $V=0.00260+0.00000399D^2H$. The simultaneous F-test using this equation showed that the estimated tree stem volumes were not significantly different (${\alpha}=0.05$ level) from the observed stem volumes for model evaluation. Therefore, site index and volume prediction equations prepared in this study could provide an indication of site quality and basic information for making of yield table, and could be used for rational forest management of Larix leptolepis stands grown in Jinan region.

Algebraic Force Distribution in Hexapod Walking Robots with a Failed Leg (고장이 존재하는 육족 보행 로봇을 위한 대수적 힘 분배)

  • In this paper, a novel foot force distribution algorithm for hexapod walking robots is presented. The considered hexapod robot has fault-tolerant tripod gaits with a failed leg in locked-joint failure. The principle of the proposed algorithm is to minimize the slippage of the leg that determines the stability margin of the fault-tolerant gaits. The fault-tolerant tripod gait has a drawback that it has less stability margin than normal gaits. Considering this drawback, we use the feature that there are always three supporting legs, and by incorporating the theory of Zero-Interaction Force, we calculate the foot forces analytically without resort to any optimization technique. In a case study, the proposed algorithm is compared with a conventional foot force distribution method and its applicability is demonstrated.

Teaching Proportional Reasoning in Elementary School Mathematics (초등학교에서 비례 추론 지도에 관한 논의)

  • The aim of this study is to look into the didactical background for teaching proportional reasoning in elementary school mathematics and offer suggestions to improve teaching proportional reasoning in the future. In order to attain these purposes, this study extracted and examined key ideas with respect to the didactical background on teaching proportional reasoning through a theoretical consideration regarding various studies on proportional reasoning. Based on such examination, this study compared and analyzed textbooks used in the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Korea. In the light of such theoretical consideration and analytical results, this study provided suggestions for improving teaching proportional reasoning in elementary schools in Korea as follows: giving much weight on proportional reasoning, emphasizing multiplicative comparison and discerning between additive comparison and multiplicative comparison, underlining the ratio concept as an equivalent relation, balancing between comparisons tasks and missing value tasks inclusive of quantitative and qualitative, algebraic and geometrical aspects, emphasizing informal strategies of students before teaching cross-product method, and utilizing informal and pre-formal models actively.

Diversity of Problem Solving Methods about a Problem of Area from the History of Mathematics by High Achieving Elementary School Students (수학사의 한 넓이 문제에 대한 초등 수학 우수아의 풀이 다양성 탐색)

  • This study investigates how high achievers solve a given mathematical problem. The problem, which comes from 'SanHakIbMun', a Korean mathematics book from eighteenth century, is not used in regular courses of study. It requires students to determine the area of a gnomon given four dimensions(4,14,4,22). The subjects are 84 sixth grade elementary school students who, at the recommendation of his/her school principal, participated in the mathematics competition held by J university. The methods used by these students can be classified into two approaches: numerical and decomposing-reconstructing, which are subdivided into three and six methods respectively. Of special note are a method which assumes algebraic feature, and some methods which appear in the history of eastern mathematics. Based on the result, we may observe a great variance in methods used, despite the fact that nearly half of the subject group used the numerical approach.

Derivation of Exact Dynamic Stiffness Matrix of a Beam-Column Element on Elastic Foundation (균일하게 탄성지지된 보-기둥요소의 엄밀한 동적강성행렬 유도)

  • The governing equation and force-displacement rotations of a beam-column element on elastic foundation we derived based on variational approach of total potential energy. An exact static and dynamic 4×4 element stiffness matrix of the beam-column element is established via a generalized lineal-eigenvalue problem by introducing 4 displacement parameters and a system of linear algebraic equations with complex matrices. The structure stiffness matrix is established by the conventional direct stiffness method. In addition the F. E. procedure is presented by using Hermitian polynomials as shape function and evaluating the corresponding elastic and geometric stiffness and the mass matrix. In order to verify the efficiency and accuracy of the beam-column element using exact dynamic stiffness matrix, buckling loads and natural frequencies are calculated for the continuous beam structures and the results are compared with F E. solutions.

3D Reconstruction using the Key-frame Selection from Reprojection Error (카메라 재투영 오차로부터 중요영상 선택을 이용한 3차원 재구성)

  • Key-frame selection algorithm is defined as the process of selecting a necessary images for 3D reconstruction from the uncalibrated images. Also, camera calibration of images is necessary for 3D reconstuction. In this paper, we propose a new method of Key-frame selection with the minimal error for camera calibration. Using the full-auto-calibration, we estimate camera parameters for all selected Key-frames. We remove the false matching using the fundamental matrix computed by algebraic deviation from the estimated camera parameters. Finally we obtain 3D reconstructed data. Our experimental results show that the proposed approach is required rather lower time costs than others, the error of reconstructed data is the smallest. The elapsed time for estimating the fundamental matrix is very fast and the error of estimated fundamental matrix is similar to others.

Seismic Fragility Analysis of Multi-Modes Structures Considering Modal Contribution Factor (모드기여도를 고려한 복수모드구조물의 지진취약도분석)

  • In the course of seismic probabilistic risk assessment(SPRA), seismic fragility analysis(SFA) is utilized as a tool to evaluate the actual seismic capacity of structures. This paper introduces a methodology of SFA and its evaluation procedures, especially focusing on the basic fragility variables. A new definition of the response spectrum shape factor as one of the most critical basic variables is suggested. The new factor is expressed as a term of linear algebraic sum using the modal contribution factor. The efficiency of new response spectrum shape factor is evaluated and validated to use in practice through the case study of the nuclear power plant structures. The case study results show that the proposed method can be effectively applicable to multi-mode structures with composite modal damping.

An Analysis of Understanding Level of High School Students Shown in Trigonometric Functions (삼각함수에 대한 고등학생들의 이해 층위 분석)

  • In this study, using the tasks related trigonometric functions, the degree of high school students' understanding of the function concept was examined through the level of Hitt(1998). First, the degree of the students' understanding was classified by level, then the concept understanding was reclassified by the process or the object. As a result, high school students' concept understanding showed incompleteness in three stages. It was possible to know that the process in the interpretation of the graph is the main perspective, and the operation of algebraic representation is regarded as important. Based on these results, it seems necessary to study the teaching-learning method which can understand trigonometric functions from various perspectives. It seems necessary to study a lesson model that can reach function concept's understanding level 5 that maintains consistency between problem solving and representation system.

Development of Site Index Model for Cryptomeria japonica Stands by the Current Growth Characteristics in South Korea (현실임분 생장특성을 반영한 삼나무 지위지수 추정 모델 개발)

  • This study was carried out to provide basic data for logical forest management by developing a site index curve reflecting the current growth characteristics of Cryptomeria japonica stands in Korea. The height growth model was developed using the Chapman-Richards, Schumacher, Gompertz, and Weibull algebraic difference equations, which are widely used in growth estimation, for data collected from 119 plots through the 7th National Forest Inventory and stand survey. The Chapman-Richards equation, with the highest model fit, was selected as the best equation for the height growth model, and a site index curve was developed using the guide curve method. To compare the developed site index curve with that on the yield table, paired T-tests with a significance level of 5% were performed. The results indicated that there were no significant differences between the site index curve values at all ages, and the p-value was smaller after the reference age than before. Therefore, the site index curve developed through this study reflects the characteristics of the changing growth environment of C. japonica stands and can be used in accordance with the site index curve on the current yield table. Thus, this information can be considered valuable as basic data for reasonable forest management.

Performance Improvements of SCAM Climate Model using LAPACK BLAS Library (SCAM 기상모델의 성능향상을 위한 LAPACK BLAS 라이브러리의 활용)

  • With the development of supercomputing technology and hardware technology, numerical computation methods are also being advanced. Accordingly, improved weather prediction becomes possible. In this paper, we propose to apply the LAPACK(Linear Algebra PACKage) BLAS(Basic Linear Algebra Subprograms) library to the linear algebraic numerical computation part within the source code to improve the performance of the cumulative parametric code, Unicon(A Unified Convection Scheme), which is included in SCAM(Single-Columns Atmospheric Model, simplified version of CESM(Community Earth System Model)) and performs standby operations. In order to analyze this, an overall execution structure diagram of SCAM was presented and a test was conducted in the relevant execution environment. Compared to the existing source code, the SCOPY function achieved 0.4053% performance improvement, the DSCAL function 0.7812%, and the DDOT function 0.0469%, and all of them showed a 0.8537% performance improvement. This means that the LAPACK BLAS application method, a library for high-density linear algebra operations proposed in this paper, can improve performance without additional hardware intervention in the same CPU environment.
