Detection of Al3+ by fluorescent turn-on nitrogen/sulphur-binary doped carbon dots

  • In this study, a straightforward and precise nitrogen/sulphur-codoped carbon dots (N/S-CD) was produced using a microwave irradiation approach. The N/S-CD was formulated from succinic acid (SA), bis-(3-aminopropyl)-amine (BAPA), and sodium thiosulphate (STS) as sources of carbon, nitrogen, and sulphur, respectively. The synthesized N/S-CD established a valuable quantum yield (QY) of 70 % and was sensitive to aluminium ion (Al3+) with a detection limit of 0.21 µM and a linear concentration range of 0-100 µM. When detecting Al3+ in real water samples, the N/S-CD resulted in a satisfactory recovery in the range of 91.14 %-103.37 %. Thus, the proposed study is very promising for Al3+ detection in environmental water samples.

Classification of Gravitational Waves from Black Hole-Neutron Star Mergers with Machine Learning

  • This study developed a machine learning-based methodology to classify gravitational wave (GW) signals from black hol-eneutron star (BH-NS) mergers by combining convolutional neural network (CNN) with conditional information for feature extraction. The model was trained and validated on a dataset of simulated GW signals injected to Gaussian noise to mimic real world signals. We considered all three types of merger: binary black hole (BBH), binary neutron star (BNS) and neutron starblack hole (NSBH). We achieved up to 96% correct classification of GW signals sources. Incorporating our novel conditional information approach improved classification accuracy by 10% compared to standard time series training. Additionally, to show the effectiveness of our method, we tested the model with real GW data from the Gravitational Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-3) and successfully classified ~90% of signals. These results are an important step towards low-latency real-time GW detection.

  • Considerable beneficial effects on osteoporosis from soy intake in postmenopausal women are being reported (Murkies et al.1998, Arjmandi et al. 1996). Isoflavones(IF), one of phytoestrogenic substances in the soybean, have been suggested for the effect. Our preliminary study showed that even the young chicks fed IF-rich diet tended to have higher bone ash content than those fed IF-poor diet. IF have been reported to decrease bone ash content than those fed IF-poor diet, IF have been reported to decrease bone loss by reducing bone resorption. Soybean meal has been one of the most important protein sources in poultry diets. We assume that the IF intake through dietary soybean meal could give meaningful influences on the birds. This study was carried out to determine effects of dietary IF from soybean sources on bone development in young chicks. Soy protein concentrate (SPC, IF-poor)and an IF concentrate(Phyto-Nutramin) were formulated together with purified-type ingredients to provide three different levels(25, 240 and 480 mg/kg) of total IF. Control diet(240 mg/kg) was prepared with isolated soyprotein(ISP, IF-rich). The diets were fed to 96, 3-day old, layer-type, male chicks, divided into 4 treatments with 3 replications for 3 weeks. Chicks fed the ISP diet had better gain/feed ratios than fed the SPC diets. Birds fed the diets with higher levels of IF tended to show higher values in serum total and ionized Ca% and tibial bone density, length % ash, stiffness and strain. This trend however, appeared less significant at the end of third week. No noticeable differences in sizes of comb and testicle and serum alkaline phosphatase activities were observed among the dietary groups. These results suggest that dietary isoflavones from soybean sources could be associated with chemical composition and physical properties of bone in sizes of comb and testicle and serum alkaline phosphatase activities were observed among the dietary groups. 알루미늄 응집제를 사용한 호수수질 개선 사례 연구 (The Application of Aluminum Coagulant for the Improvement of Water Quality in Three Recreational Ponds)

  • 부영양호의 수질정화를 위하여 알루미늄 응집제를 호수에 첨가하고 조류와 부유물의 침강제거효과, 및 인의 감소효과를 측정하였다. 서울 석촌호와 강원대학교 구내 연못을 대상으로 8회에 걸쳐 첨가량을 달리하여 실시하였다. 7회의 처리에서는 황산알루미늄을 사용하였고 1회는 PAC를 사용하였다. 부유물질의 침강제거효과는 첨가량에 따라 좌우되었다. 10.0 mgAl/l를 첨가한 경우에는 부유물질, 조류, 인 등이 완전히 제거되었으나, 3.3 mgAl/l와 1.8 mgAl/l를 첨가한 경우에는 부분적인제거 효과가 있었다. 그러나 0.45 mgAl/l로 첨가한 경우에는 거의 개선효과가 보이지 않았다. 알루미늄 첨가가 부유물을 침전제거에 효과를 나타내기 위해서는 최소역치 (약 5 mgAl/l) 이상을 투여하여야 하는 것으로 결론지을 수 있다. 효과 지속시간은 외부로부터의 추가부하량 유입에 의해 좌우되는 것으로 보인다. 석촌호에서는 인근 하천수의 펌핑에 의해 곧 다시 혼탁해 졌으며, 구내연못에서는 강우후 주변의 토사가 유입되거나 지하수 펌핑으로 영양염류가 유입되면 곧 다시 조류가 번성하고 혼탁해 졌다. 응집제 투여의 결과로 pH가 지나치게 낮아지는 피해나 어패류에 대한 유해성 징후는 발견되지 않았다. 외부 오염원을 제거할 수 없는 호수에서는 응집제의 투여가 호수수질 개선의 임시적 대안으로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 보인다.

  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac rhythm disturbance, which carries significant cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The medical treatment for AF is cumbersome and unsatisfactory, which has highlighted the need to develop alternative treatments for AF. The recent discovery that AF is often initiated by atrial ectopic beats has resulted in treatments designed to target the ectopic sources, particularly those within the pulmonary veins. Building on the pioneering work of Cox et al., a recent reported series demonstrated the feasibility of treating patients undergoing cardiac surgery for other structural heart diseases with limited, left-atrial ablation lesion sets using alternative energy sources. As less complex modifications of the Maze procedure have been developed, a number of energy sources have been introduced to create of electrically isolating lesions within the atria. These sources have been used both endocardially in arrest heart procedures as well as epicardially in a beating heart setting. This review summarizes the recent advances in surgery for AF that will aid in the development of an effective, minimally invasive surgical procedure to cure patients with AF.

KVNCS: 2. The Fringe Survey of New Candidates for VLBI Calibrators in the K Band

  • The main goal of the Korean VLBI Network Calibrator Survey (KVNCS) is to expand the VLBI calibrators catalog for KVN, KaVA (KVN and VERA Array), EAVN (East-Asian VLBI Network), and other extended regions. The second KVNCS (KVNCS2) aimed to detect VLBI fringes of new candidates for calibrators in the K band. Out of the 1533 sources whose single-dish flux density in the K band was measured with KVN telescopes (Lee et al. 2017), 556 sources were observed with KVN in the K band. KVNCS2 confirmed the detection of VLBI fringes of 424 calibrator candidates over a single baseline. All detected sources had a high Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of >25. Finally, KVNCS2 confirmed 347 new candidates as VLBI calibrators in the K band, resulting in a 5% increase in the sky coverage compared to previous studies. The spatial distribution was quasi-uniform across the observable region (Dec. > -32.5°). In addition, the possibility as calibrator candidates for the detected sources was checked, using an analysis of the flux-flux relationship. Ultimately, the KVNCS catalog will not only become the VLBI calibrator list but is also useful as a database of compact radio sources for astronomical studies.

Influence of Different pH Conditions and Phosphate Sources on Phosphate Solubilization by Pantoea agglomerans DSM3493

  • Pantoea agglomerans DSM3493 was isolated from green house soils collected from Chungchugnam-do province, Gongju-Gun area in South Korea and phosphate solubilization and organic acid production of the strain were assessed using three types of insoluble phosphate sources (Ca phosphate, Fe phosphate and Al phosphate) under three different pH conditions (7, 8 and 9). The highest Ca phosphate solubilization ($651{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$) was recorded at pH 7 followed by pH 8 and 9 (428 and $424{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ respectively). The solubilization rate was found to be 80.4, 98.1 and $88.7{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ (for Fe phosphate containing medium) and 9.3, 12.1 and $29.8{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ (for the Al phosphate containing medium) respectively at pH 7, 8 and 9. Though increasing pH of the medium caused reduction in the rate of solubilization of Ca phosphate, solubilization of Fe and Al phosphates enhanced with increasing pH. By contrast, the highest amount of organic acid was produced with Ca phosphate while the lowest was recorded with the presence of Al phosphate. Among the organic acids, gluconic acid production was found to be the highest, followed by oxalic acid and citric acid regardless the source of phosphate. Results can thus be concluded that the production of organic acids appears to play a significant role in the inorganic phosphate solubilization.

IGRINS observations toward Class I disk sources, IRAS03445+3242 and IRAS0429+2436

  • We present the high-resolution Immersion GRating INfrared Spectrograph (IGRINS) spectra of two Class I sources, IRAS03445+3242 and IRAS04239+2436. Both sources show the evidence of Keplerian disks; the broadened CO overtone (${\Delta}v=2$) transitions in emission and neutral metal lines (Mg I, Fe I, and Al I) in absorption. The thin Keplerian disk with a rotational velocity of ~100 km s-1 and a gas temperature of 5000 K at the innermost annulus can reproduce the CO overtone transitions including the bandhead emission. The outer dusty disk or the envelope needs to fit the narrow absorption features overlaid on the broad emission lines in the CO overtone transitions.

Ti-Al-Si-N 박막 제작을 위한 합금 타겟 제조 및 박막의 기계적 특성 (Fabrication of Alloy Target for Formation of Ti-Al-Si-N Composite Thin Film and Their Mechanical Properties)

  • Prevailing dissemination of machine tools and cutting technology have caused drastic developments of high speed dry machining with work materials of high hardness, and demands on the high-hardness-materials with high efficiency have become increasingly important in terms of productivity, cost reduction, as well as environment-friendly issue. Addition of Si to TiAlN has been known to form nano-composite coating with higher hardness of over 30 GPa and oxidation temperature over $1,000^{\circ}C$. However, it is not easy to add Si to TiAlN by using conventional PVD technologies. Therefore, Ti-Al-Si-N have been prepared by hybrid process of PVD with multiple target sources or PVD combined with PECVD of Si source gas. In this study, a single composite target of Ti-Al-Si was prepared by powder metallurgy of MA (mechanical alloying) and SPS (spark plasma sintering). Properties of he resulting alloying targets were examined. They revealed a microstructure with micro-sized grain of about $1{\sim}5{\mu}m$, and all the elements were distributed homogeneously in the alloying target. Hardness of the Ti-Al-Si-N target was about 1,127 Hv. Thin films of Ti-Al-Si-N were prepared by unbalanced magnetron sputtering method by using the home-made Ti-Al-Si alloying target. Composition of the resulting thin film of Ti-Al-Si-N was almost the same with that of the target. The thin film of Ti-Al-Si-N showed a hardness of 35 GPa and friction coefficient of 0.66.

Fe-26Mn-2Al 합금의 진동 감쇠능에 미치는 결정립 크기의 영향 (The Effect of grain size on the damping capacity of Fe-26Mn-2Al alloy)

  • The effect of grain size on the damping capacity of Fe-26Mn-2Al alloy studied in this paper has been investigated after changing the microstructure by cold rolling and changing grain size. Micro structures in Fe-26Mn-2Al at room temperature consist of a large quantity of austenite and a small quantity of ${\varepsilon}\;and\;{\alpha}'$ martensite. And ${\varepsilon}\;and\;{\alpha}'$ martensite was increased by increasing the degree of cold rolling. The content of deformation induced martensite was increased with increasing the degree of cold rolling. Damping capacity was linearly increased with increasing ${\varepsilon}$ martensite content, which suggests that stacking faults and ${\varepsilon}$ martensite variant boundaries are the principle damping sources. With increasing the grain size in Fe-26Mn-2Al alloy, the damping capacity was increased due to increasing the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite by decrement in stability of austenite phase. With decreasing the grain size, the content of deformation induced martensite was decreased and the damping capacity was decreased.
