An Improvement in the Properties of MH Electrode of Ni/MH Battery by the Copper Coating (Ni/MH 전지에서 Cu 도금에 의한 음극활물질의 전극 특성 향상)

  • The effect of microencapsulation of maetal hydride (MH) with copper on the electrode performance of a Ni/MH battery has been investigated. The MH electrodes were prepared with a combination of cold press and paste methods. The discharge capacity of the electrode increased with an addition of small amounts if CMC into the electrode, but decreased when heat-treated in an oxygen-free nitrogen flow. The capacity of a Cu-coated $LaNi_5$ electrode was higher than that of LaNi5electrode. The discharge capacity of the electrode prepared with Cu-coated $LaNi_5$ increased with the increase of copper content in the electrode. It is considered that the increase of copper content enhanced the current density on the electrode surface, leading to the increase of the discharge capacity The MH electrode coated by an acidic electroless plating method showed much higher discharge capacity than that using an alkaline electroless plating method. The discharge capacity of the $LaNi_{4.5}Al_{0.5}$ electrode was higher than that of the $LaNi_5$ electrode. Also, the effect of microencapsulation on the deactivation of $LaNi_5$ was studied using an absorption-desorption cycle in CO-containing hydrogen.

Understanding the Effect on Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Medium of Thickness of Physical Vapor Deposited Al-Ni Electrodes (Physical Vapor Deposition 방법으로 제조된 Al-Ni 전극의 두께가 알칼라인 수전해 수소발생반응에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • This paper presents a study of the effect of thickness of porous Al-Ni electrodes, on the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) in alkaline media. As varying deposition time at 300 W DC sputtering power, the thickness of the Al-Ni electrodes was controlled from 1 to $20{\mu}m$. The heat treatment was carried out in $610^{\circ}C$, followed by selective leaching of the Al-rich phase. XRD studies confirmed the presence of $Al_3Ni_2$ intermetallic compounds after the heat treatment, indicating the diffusion of Ni from the Ni-rich phase to Al-rich phase. The porous structure of the Al-Ni electrodes after the selective leaching of Al was also confirmed in SEM-EDS analysis. The double layer capacitance ($C_{dl}$) and roughness factor ($R_f$) of the electrodes were increased for the thicker Al-Ni electrodes. As opposed to the general results in above, there were no further improvements of the HER activity in the case of the electrode thickness above $10{\mu}m$. This result may indicate that the $R_f$ is not the primary factor for the HER activity in alkaline media.

Effects of Alloying Elements and Binding Materials on the Corrosion Behavior of Metal Hydride Electrodes (금속수소화물전극의 부식특성에 미치는 합금원소와 결합제의 영향)

  • It has been investigated the effects of alloying elements and binders on the corrosion behavior of metal hydride electrodes for anode of Ni/MH secondary battery. The $AB_5$-type alloys, $(LM)Ni_{4.49}Co_{0.1}Mn_{0.205}Al_{0.205}$ and $(LM)Ni_{3.6}Co_{0.7}Mn_{0.3}Al_{0.4}$, were used for the experiments. The electrodes were prepared by mixing and cold-pressing of alloy powders with Si sealent or PTFE powders, or cold-pressing the electroless copper coated alloy powders. The amount of copper coating was 20wt%. In order to examine corrosion behavior of the electrodes, the corrosion current and the current density, in 6M KOH aqueous solution after removal of oxygen in the solution, were measured by potentiodynamic and cyclic voltamo methods. The results showed that Co in the alloy increased corrosion resistance of the electrode whereas Ni decreased the stability of the electrode during the charge-discharge cycles. The electrode used Si sealant as a binder showed a lower corrosion current density than the electrode used PTFE and the electrode used Cu-coated alloy powders showed the best corrosion resistance.

Development of in-situ Sintered Ni-Al Alloy Anode for Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell (용융탄산염 연료전지용 in-situ 소결된 Ni-Al 합금 연료극 개발)

  • For commercialization of molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), it has some problems to be overcome such as decrease of porosity and thickness of the anode under the operating condition (at $650^{\circ}C$ and working pressure of more than 2 $kg_f/cm^2$). Recently, Ni-Al alloy anode has been proposed to replace the conventional Ni-Cr anode as an alternative material to resist a creep and inhibit the sintering. The objective of this research is to sinter the green sheet of Ni-Al alloy anode during single cell pre-treatment process, which has several advantages like cost down and simplification of manufacturing process. However, the Ni-Al alloy anode prepared with a conventional pre-treatment process showed the phase separation of Ni-Al alloy and formation of micropore(${\leqq}0.4{\mu}m$), resulting in low creep resistance and high electrolyte re-distribution. In order to prevent the Ni-Al alloy anode from phase-separating, nitrogen gas was used in the process of pre-treatment. Introducing the nitrogen, the phase separation from Ni-Al alloy into nickel and alumina was minimized and increased creep resistance. However, there was some micropore formation on the surface of Ni-Al alloy anode during the cell operation due to creation of lithium aluminate. Addition of more amount of electrolyte into a cell, especially at cathode, made the cell performance stable for 2,000 hrs. Consequently, it was possible to make the Ni-Al alloy anode with good creep resistance by the modified in-situ sintering technique.

Electrochemical Study of Electrode Material of Ni-MH Battery for HEV and PEMFC Fuel Cell (HEV 및 PEMFC 연료전지용 니켈수소 전지의 전극재료에 대한 전기화학적 평가)

  • Electrochemical hydrogenation/dehydrogenation properties were studied for a single particle of a Mm-based(Mm : misch metal) hydrogen storage alloy($MmNi_{3.55}Co_{0.75}Mn_{0.4}Al_{0.3}$) for the anode of Ni-MH batteries. A carbon fiber microelectrode was manipulated to make electrical contact with an alloy particle, and the cyclic voltammetry and the galvanostatic charge/discharge experiments were performed. A single particle of the alloy showed the discharge capacity of 280[mAh/g], the value being 90[%] of the theoretical capacity. Data were compared with that of the composite film consisting of the alloy particles and a polymer binder, which is more practical form for Ni-MH batteries. Additionally, pulverization of the alloy particles are directly observed. Compared with the conventional composite film electrodes, the single particle measurements using the microelectrode gave more detailed, true information about the hydrogen storage alloy.

  • 용융탄산염 연료전지 양극 재료인 tape casting된 다공성 Ni-Cr 합금과 Ni-Al 합금의 전기화학적 특성과 소결 및 creep특성이 양극조건의 분위기 $650^{\circ}C$에서 조사되었다. 이들 전극재료의 전류밀도는 100 mV의 과전압에서 약 100~150㎃/$\textrm{cm}^2$의 크기이었다. Ni-Al 합금에서는 Ni 표면에 형성된 $Al_2$O$_3$의 영향으로 소결저항성이 큰 것으로 나타났으며, Creep 특성도 Al 첨가량의 증가에 의해 향상되었다.

Effects of Pd Addition on Electrode properties of Metal Hydride (Pd 첨가가 금속수소화물 전극 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Recently the Ni/MH secondary battery has been studied extensively to achieve higher energy density, longer cycle life and faster charging-discharging rate etc. In this work, the electrode properties of $(LM)Ni_{4.49}Co_{0.1}Mn_{0.205}Al_{0.205}$ alloy and $Ti_{0.6}Zr_{0.4}V_{0.6}Ni_{1.4}$ alloy with addition of Pd were investigated. These alloys did not show any change in XRD pattern by Pd addition. As Pd was added as alloy element, the activation behavior was not affected significantly in both $AB_2$ type and $AB_5$ type electrodes and, On charging and discharging in high current density, Discharge capacity with increasing of Pd content was more decreased. But cycle life was showed increasing. Especially the electrode of $Ti_{0.6}Zr_{0.4}V_{0.6}Ni_{1.4}+0.5wt%$ Pd alloy was not almost decreased discharge capacity for 400cycles.

  • Electrochemical hydrogenation/dehydrogenation properties were studied for a single particle of a Mm-based(Mm : minh metal) hydrogen storage alloy($MmNi_{3.55}Co_{0.75}Mn_{0.4}Al_{0.3}$) for fuel cell and Ni-MH batteries. A carbon fiber microelectrode was manipulated to make electrical contact with an alloy particle, and the potential-step experiment was carried out to determine the apparent chemical diffusion coefficient of hydrogen atom($D_{app}$) in the alloy. Since the alloy particle we used here was a dense, conductive sphere, the spherical diffusion model was employed for data analysis. $D_{app}$ was found to vary the order between $10^{-9}\;and\;10^{-10}[cm^2/s]$ over the course of hydrogenation and dehydrogenation process. Compared with the conventional composite film electrodes, the single particle measurements using the microelectrode gave more detailed, true information about the hydrogen storage alloy.

  • 기존 Ni-10w/o Cr 연료극과 성능은 대등하면서 creep 저항성이 뛰어난 연료극을 제조하기 위하여 Ni-5w/o Al 합금 연료극의 제조 공정을 연구하였다. 소성 분위기에 따라 완전산화 방법과 부분산화 방법으로 나누어 제조된 전극들의 미세구조 변화를 관찰하였으며, 실험 결과 부분산화 방법으로 제조한 Ni-5w/o Al 합금 연료극이 가장 우수한 소결 및 creep 저항성을 나타내었다. 이는 연료극이 산화물 분산강화 구조를 갖기 때문으로 부분산화 방법으로 제조한 Ni-5w/o Al 합금 연료극을 장착한 단전지의 경우 기계적 안정성 및 전극 안정성이 향상되었다.

Electrical Behavior of Ni/Ti and Au/Al Contact Metallization on GaN (Ni/Au와 Au/Al 전극 증착에 의한 GaN의 전기적 특성 연구)

  • Electrical properties of Ni/Au/p-GaN and optical properties of epitaxial GaN MQW LED on sapphire were characterized. At 20 mA forward bias, GaN MQW emitted in the blue at 470 nm. Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics were decreased linearly with the annealing temperature. The resistivity of Ni/Au contacts was found by TLM measurements to be of device quality (2×10/sup -1/Ωㆍcm).
