Fe/$Al_2O_3$ granules with various compositions were prepared by combining sol-gel with oil drop method for Fishcer-Tropsh reaction to produce light olefin from synthesis gas. The granules was characterized and employed as a catalyst in the reaction. The surface area of granules was decreased with increasing Fe concentration. Especially, granule with 1.5 of Al/Fe ratios showed the highest CO conversion. However, the olefin selectivity was hardly affected by Al/Fe ratio. K concentration of granule gave a significant effect on catalytic performance. Initial CO conversion and olefin selectivity were increased with K concentration. However, the catalyst with higher K concentration was deactivated rapidly.
Ferromagnetic ${\tau}-phase$$Mn_{54}Al_{46}C_{2.44}$ particles were synthesized, and its composites with commercial $Sm_2Fe_{17}N_3$ and synthesized $Fe_{65}Co_{35}$ powders were fabricated. Smaller grain size than the single domain size of the $Mn_{54}Al_{46}C_{2.44}$ without obvious grain boundaries and secondary phases is the origin for the low intrinsic coercivity. It was confirmed that the magnetic properties of the $Mn_{54}Al_{46}C_{2.44}$ can be enhanced by magnetic exchange coupling with the hard magnetic $Sm_2Fe_{17}N_3$ and soft magnetic $Fe_{65}Co_{35}$. The high degrees of the exchange coupling were verified by calculating first derivative curves. Thermo-magnetic stabilities of the composites from 100 to 400 K were measured and compared. It was demonstrated that the $Mn_{54}Al_{46}C_{2.44}$ based composites containing $Sm_2Fe_{17}N_3$ and $Fe_{65}Co_{35}$ could be promising candidates for future permanent magnetic materials with the proper control of purity, magnetic properties, etc.
The electrodes comprising nano-sized $LiFePO_4$, carbon black and binder are prepared with two different Al current collectors. One is the generally used normal Al foil and the other is the chemically etched Al foil. Surface characteristics of each Al foil and electrochemical performance of the cathodes using each foil are investigated. The electrode from the etched Al foil exhibits better physical and electrochemical properties as compared to those of the normal Al foil because the etched Al foil has rough surface with sub-micron pores which improve the adhesion between the electrode materials and the substrate. The electrode on the etched Al foil has such a strong peel strength that the impedance is smaller than that of normal one. Indeed the $LiFePO_4$ electrode from the etched Al foil exhibits a better rate capability and remains intact even after storage for 1 week at the charged state at the elevated temperature $60^{\circ}C$.
${(Fe_{0.85}Co_{0.15})}_{75}Al_{7}B_{18-x}Nb_{x}(x=2,\;4\;and\;6\;at%)\;and\;{(Fe_{0.85}Co_{0.15})}_{75}Al_{y}B_{21-y}Nb_{4}(y=3,\;5,\;7,\;9\;at%)$ alloys were prepared by a single-roll quenching method. Microstructure and magnetic properties of the alloys such as saturation magnetization, initial permeability, coercive force and power loss have been investigated as functions of composition and armea1ing temperature. Nanocrystallines are obtained by armealing of as-prepared amorphous alloys in all compositions except the alloy of 9 at% AI. Saturation magnetization increases after armea1ing and, decreases with Nb content. However, AI and B affects the saturation magnetization insignificantly. Initial perrreability of nanocrystallized alloy at 50 kHz is improved roore than twice compared to that of the as-prepared alloy. Coercive force and core loss reach less than half after armea1ing.

The friction characteristics of Al-Fe alloy powders are investigated in order to develop an eco-friendly friction material to replace Cu fiber, a constituent of brake-pad friction materials. Irregularly shaped Al-Fe alloy powders, prepared by gas atomization, are more uniformly dispersed than conventional Cu fiber on the brake pad matrix. The wear rate of the friction material using Al-8Fe alloy powder is lower than that of the Cu fiber material. The change in friction coefficient according to the friction lap times is 7.2% for the Cu fiber, but within 3.8% for the Al-Fe alloy material, which also shows excellent judder characteristics. The Al-Fe alloy powders are uniformly distributed in the brake pad matrix and oxide films of Al and Fe are homogeneously formed at the friction interface between the disc and pad, thus exhibiting excellent friction and lubrication characteristics. The brake pad containing Al-Fe powders avoids contamination by Cu dust, which is generated during braking, by replacing the Cu fiber while maintaining the friction and lubrication performance.
In this study, we have investigated the geochemical behavior and fate of heavy metals in acid rock drainage (ARD). The ARD was collected from the area of the former Dongrae pyrophyllite mine. The Dongrae Creek waters were strongly acidic (pH : 2.3~4.2) and contained high concentrations of $SO_4$, Al, Fe, Mn, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Cd, due to the influence of ARD generated from weathering of pyrite-rich pyrophyllite ores. However, the water quality gradually improved as the water flows downstream. In view of the change of mole fractions of dissolved Fe, Al and Mn, the generated ARD was initially both Fe- and AA-ich but progressively evolved to more Al-rich toward the confluence with the uncontaminated Suyoung River. As the AR3 (pH 2.3) mixed with the uncontaminated waters (pH 6.5), the pH increased up to 4.2, which caused precipitation of $SO_4$-rich Fe hydroxysulfate as a red-colored, massive ferricrete precipitate throughout the Dongrae Creek. Accompanying the precipitation of ferricrete, the Dongrae Creek water progressively changed to more Al-rich toward downstream sites. At the mouth of the Dongrae Creek, it (pH 3.4) mixed with the Suyoung River (pH 6.9), where pH increased to 5.7, causing precipitation of Al hydroxysulfate (white precipitates). Neutralization of the ARD-contaminated waters in the laboratory caused the successive formation of Fe precipitates at pH<3.5 and Al precipitates at higher pH (4~6). Manganese compounds were precipitated at pH>6. The removal of trace metals was dependent on the precipitation of these compounds, which acted as sorbents. The pHs for 50% sorption ($pH_{50}$) in Fe-rich and Al-rich waters were respectively 3.2 and 4.5 for Pb, 4.5 and 5.8 for Cu, 5.2 and 7.4 for Cd, and 5.8 and 7.0 for Zn. This indicates that the trace metals were sorbed preferentially with increasing pH in the general order of Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn and that the sorption of trace metals in Al-rich water occurred at higher pH than those in Fe-rich water. The results of this study demonstrated that the partitioning of trace metals in ARD is not only a function of pH, but also depends on the chemical composition of the water.
An ${\alpha}$-Ferrite (Fe) powder dispersed with 4 vol.% of $Al_2O_3$ was successfully produced by a simple miling at 210 K with a mixture of $Fe_2O_3$, Fe and Al ingredient powders, followed by 2 step high temperature consolidation: Hot Pressing (HP) at 1323 K and then Hot Isostatic Pressing at 1423 K. The microstructure of the consolidated material was characterized by standard metallographic techniques such as XRD (X-ray Diffraction), TEM and STEM-EDS. The results of STEM-EDS analysis showed that the HIPed materials comprised a mixture of pure Fe matrix with a grain size of ~20 nm and $Al_2O_3$ with a bimodal size distribution of extremely fine (~5 nm) and medium size dispersoids (~20 nm). The mechanical properties of the consolidated materials were characterized by compressive test and micro Vickers hardness test at room temperature. The results showed that the yield strength of the ODS (Oxide Dispersion Strengthened) Fe alloy are as much as $674{\pm}39$ MPa and the improvement of the yield strength is attributed to the presence of the fine $Al_2O_3$ dispersoid.
To improve the ductility of $Al_3Hf$ and $Al_3Ta$ intermetallic compounds, which are the potential temperature structural materials, the mechanical alloying behaviour and the effect of ternary additions on the $Ll_2$ phase formation were investigated. During the mechanical alloying by the SPEX mill, the $Ll_2$$Al_3Hf$ intermetallic compound was formed after 6 hours of milling in AL-25%Hf system. In AL-25%Ta system, however, only the $D0_{22}$$Al_3Ta$ intermetallic compound was formed until 30 hours of milling and the $Ll_2$ phase was not observed. In AL-12.5%M-25%Ta(M=Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Ni) systems, the additions of Cu and Zn had no effect on the $D0_{22}$ structure of the binary $Al_3Hf$ and the additions of Mn, Fe and Ni produced the amorphous phase. Therefore it was considered that these ternary additions could not overcome the energy difference between $Ll_2$ and $D0_{22}$ structures in the $Al_3Hf$ intermetallic compound. In AL-12.5%M-25%Hf(M=Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Ni)systems, the additions of Cu and Zn did not affect the $Ll_2$ structure of the binary $Al_3Hf$ but the additions of oMn, Fe and Ni produced the amorphous phase as they did in AL-12.5%M-25%Ta systems. Therefore, it was considered that the Ni, Mn and Fe additions promote the formation of amorphous phase in $Al_3X$ intermetallic compounds.
Simulated waste liquid containing 50 ppm cobalt ion was treated by adsorbing colloidal flotation using Fe(III) or Al(IlI) as flocclant and a sodium lamyl sulfate as a collector. Parameters such as pH, surfactant concentration, Fe(III) or Al(III) concentration, gas flow rate, etc., W앙e considered. The flotation with Fe(III) showed 99.8% removal efficiency of cohalt on the conditions of initial cobalt ion concentration 50 ppm, pH 9.5, gas flow rate 70 ml/min, and flotation time 30 min. When the waste solution, was treated with 35% $H_2O_2$ prior to adsorbing colloidal flotation, the optimal pH for removing cobalt shifted m to weak alkaline range and flotation could be applied in wider range of pH as compared to non-use of $H_2O_2$. Additional use of 20 ppm Al(III) after precipitation of 50 ppm Co(II) with 50 ppm Fe(III) made the optimal pH range for preferable flotation w wider. Foreign ions such as, $NO_3^-$, $SO_4^{2-}$, $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ were adopted and their effects were observed. Of which sulfate ion was f found to be detrimental to removal of cob퍼t ion by flotation. Coprecipitation of Co ion with Fe(III) and Al(III) resulted in b better removal efficiency of cobalt IOn 피 the presence of sulfate ion.
