  • Cast-forging process has a lot of advantages in terms of saving materials along with enhancement of mechanical properties. Therefore, this process has been taken as one of candidate process to manufacturing automotive suspension parts. Since most of cast-forging parts are made with using Al-Si alloys of high castability, the mechanical properties largely depends on the primary ${\alpha}$ and eutectic Si particles. During hot forging step these microstructural features evolve with strain increment. In the present study, the mechanical property evolution was investigated in terms of microstructual evolution with strain. Specially, fracture behavior of A356 alloy was studied to find out how to improve the mechanical properties.

  • Internal defects, such as shrinkage during casting, cause stress concentrations and initiate cracking. Therefore, it is important to understand the effects of internal defects on the mechanical properties including the impact behavior. This study evaluates the effects of internal casting defects on the impact performance of A356 Al-alloy castings. The internal shrinkage defects in the casting impact specimen are scanned using an industrial Computed Tomography (CT) scanner, and drop impact tests are performed with varing impact velocities on the A356 casting aluminium specimen ($10mm{\times}10mm$ section area) in order to locate the fracture energy under an impact load. The specimens with defects with a diameter less than 0.35 mm exhibit equivalent fracture impact energies of approximately 32 J and those with a 1.7 mm diameter defect reduced the fracture impact energy by 35%.

  • The hot tear susceptibility of Al alloys was investigated by using a constrained-rod mold designed to quantify 8 types of tear tendency. The severity of the crack was scored by 5 grades on a scale of 0 to 4, with 0 being "no crack formed" and 4 being "complete separation by crack". The Hot Tear Susceptibility index (HTS) which consists of crack type scores and position scores, was proposed to compare the hot tear tendency of Al alloys. A356.0 cast alloy and AA6061 wrought Al alloy showed an HTS value of 27.5 and 53 respectively. The effects of Si, Cu, and Mg content on hot tear tendency were also investigated with a constrained-rod mold. The variation of HTS values with alloying elements represents similar behavior in the variation of the solidification range in a pseudo binary phase diagram.

  • Generally, metal is the most important material used in many engineering applications. Therefore, it is important to understand and predict the damage of metal as result of the impact. The objective of this research is to evaluate the damage criterion on the impact performance of A356 Al-alloy castings. Both experimental method and computational analysis were used to achieve the research objective. In this paper, we performed impact test according to various impact velocities to the A356 cast aluminium specimen for damage prediction. Impact computational simulation was done by applying properties obtained from the tensile test, and damages was predicted according to the damage criteria based plastic work. The good agreement of the results between the experiment and computer simulation shows that the reliability of the proposed FE simulation method to predict fracture of A356 casting components by impact.

  • The growing use of aluminum for castings over the past decade has brought with it the increased scrutiny of component properties. One area that has received much attention is the effect of in inclusions - or impurities particles held in the metal - on casting properties. A new method of electromagnetic separation for removal of inclusions in aluminum alloy melts is proposed. The principle is that as the electromagnetic force induced in metal acts on inclusions due to low electric conductivity, they are moved to the direction opposite to electromagnetic force and can be separated and removed from the melt. Experiments were carried out on A356 melt mixed alumina particles and commercial Al alloys of ADC 10 and 12. In the experiment using A356, it was proved that $Al_2O_3$ particles was separated and removed continuously from matrix melt by electromagnetic force. Based on these results, the continuous separation experiment that used ADC 10, 12 was carried and the cleanliness of melt was assessed by the amount of porosity, hydrogen contents, PoDFA and mechanical properties through tensile test. As the results of analyses, the amount of porosity and hydrogen contents decreased without variation of chemical composition in the specimen that passed the electromagnetic continuous separator. In addition, tensile strength and elongation of this specimen increased by $20{\sim}30%$ because of reduction of inclusions.

  • In present study, the effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the gravity cast superchargers housing using A356 alloy were investigated. In order to identify the characteristics of superchagers housing casting with heat treatment, Vickers hardness test, electrical conductivity test, opical and scanning electron microscopy were performed. And also, to investigate their mechanical properties, the T6 treated superchagers housing casting in optimum heat treatment condition were carried out tensile test using UTM (Universal Testing Machine).

  • A good fluidity of high strength Al-alloys is required to cast thin wall castings needed to reduce the weight of cast parts. The fluidity, measured as the length to which the metal flows in a standard channel, is affected by many factors, such as the pouring temperature, solidification type of the alloy, the channel thickness, melt head, mold materials and temperature, coating etc. Therefore the experimentally measured fluidity scatters very much and makes it difficult to estimate the fluidity of a melt with a few measurements. The effect of Ti content and grain refinement on the fluidity of high strength aluminum alloy was investigated with a test casting with 8 thin flow channels to reduce the scattering of the fluidity results. The fluidity of Al-4.8%Cu-0.6%Mn Al-6.2%Zn-1.6%Mg-1.0%Cu and well-known commercial aluminum alloy, A356 was tested. Initial content of Ti was varied from 0 to 0.2wt% and Al-5Ti-B master alloy was added for grain refinement. The flow length varied linearly with superheat. By adding Ti and Al-5Ti-B, the fluidity increased. The grain size decreased by adding grain refiner at the same time. The fluidity depended on the degree of grain refinement. The fluidity of the alloy solidifying in mushy type is improved by grain refinement, because grain refinement increases the solid fraction at the time of flow stoppage.

  • In this study, microstructure, size of primary $\alpha$, solid fraction and hardness of A356 Al alloy, were investigated. Semi-solid A356 allos were obtained by semi-solid continuous casting apparatus consists of melting furnace, formation apparatus of granular primary $\alpha$ and continuous casting apparatus. Size of promary $\alpha$ and fraction solid were decreased with decreasing temperature, and with increasing volume of cooling water. At the cooling water temperature of 15$^{\circ}C$ and cooling water volume of 18.2$\ell$/min, the sizes of primary $\alpha$ phases were decreased up to 40${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and fraction solid was 0.68.

  • Recently in the automotive industries, light and high quality material is strongly required because of emissions regulation issues. In the electromagnetic stirring process, it has many merits that are the exact control ability about material processing and a good point of the protection of environment. In this paper, the morphology of the change of primary Al phase in A356 alloy by electro magnetic stirrer was investigated to obtain the globular structure. The parameters are the current, stirring time, pouring temperature and cooling rate of different wall thickness; 5mm, 15mm, 25mm respectively. By proper selection of the processing parameters, globular primary particles can be obtained by electromagnetic stirrer.

  • The fluid flow and thermal analysis were carried out by using the finite element program, Ansys. In analysis process, a electromagnetic analysis was accomplished. In afterwards, Fluid and thermal analysis was done. Fluid flow and heat could be produced by electromagnetic pump. In other words, A magnetic field which electromagnetic pump generates influences Liquid Material(Al alloy). This paper calculates the fluid flow and temperature distribution according to time. Using material is Al alloy(A356).
