Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the use of polyurethane foam disk passive air samplers (PUF PAS) for better measurement of atmospheric polychlorinared dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) concentrations compared to PUF PAS combined with high volume air samplers (HVS). Methods: Air samples were collected by a low volume air sampler (LVS) and PUF PAS. A total of two pairs were continuously collected for six months, but the PUF was replaced every two months. Results: A good correlation was shown ($R^2=0.8595$, p<0.0001) between atmospheric PCDD/Fs concentration measured by the LVS and PUF PAS. The average air sampling rate ($1.5m^3/day-sampler$) of all PCDD/Fs congeners showed a middle of the means which were measured using a HVS by other researchers in different cities. In addition, the air sampling rates of the LVS for each congener made less difference than did those of the HVS. Conclusion: It was found that measurements using the LVS were less influenced by atmospheric peak PCDD/Fs concentrations. However, trace POPs such as PCDD/Fs may involve relatively large analytical errors in measurement, and as a result the air sampling rate of the respective PCDD/Fs isomer is also likely to involve errors. The method of using a regression straight line between the concentrations obtained from the LVS and those from the PUF PAS was judged higher than the method using the air sampling rate, since the former compensated for the experimental errors in the process of evaluation of atmospheric PCDD/F concentrations using the PUF PAS.

It is widely known that Environmental Tobacco Smoke(ETS) is not good for health. ETS is composed of a lot of chemicals. So indicators are needed to evaluate the risk of ETS in air. One of the indicators is Nicotine. Active sampler has been used to measure nicotine concentration in air. The experiments were conducted to compare the active sampler method with diffusive sampler in exposure chamber and smoking areas, respectively. Sampling rate was 40.5 ml/min in exposure chamber. Experimental sampling rate (40.5 ml/min) was more than theoretical sampling rate (33.52 ml/min). And the higher was the concentration in air, the higher was experimental sampling rate. The average desorption, rate was 113.6%. The overall precision was 7.31 %. The overall accuracy was 18.96%, which were under NIOSH criteria. The average(GM) concentrations of nicotine by two sampling methods were $8.29{\mu}g/m^{3}$ (active sampler), $7.54{\mu}/m^{3}$ (diffusive sampler) in smoking area and smoking room. There was no regression between active sampler and diffusive sampler ($R^{2}=0.2397$). But slope, coefficient of determination was 1.017, 0.9292, respectively after removing outliers. And the slope (1.017) was close to the theoretical slope (1). In conclusion, this study indicated that diffusive sampler can be used to evaluate concentration of nicotine in air instead of active sampler.

This study was conducted to evaluate the charcoal tube sampling method for carbon disulfide in the air. Breakthrough was investigated according to flow rate, sampling time and air volume. Also the storage stability by storage method and time was investigated. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The samples stored at room temperature($28.2^{\circ}C$), refrigerator($3.8^{\circ}C$) and freezer($-15.6^{\circ}C$) were analyzed every week to five weeks. At one week storage at room temperature, 3.5% of $CS_2$ in the front section of the charcoal tube migrated into the back section and 57.7% at five weeks. The amount of $CS_2$ in the back section of the charcoal increased continuously by storage time. Migration of $CS_2$ was slow at refrigerator, and stopped occur at freezer. Recovery rate $CS_2$ was 52-82% at room temperature and 92-101% at refrigerator, based on the amount at freezer as a reference value. Thus loss was observed at room temperature. 2. When 6-48 L of fresh air were passed through tubes with spiked amounts of 0.379 and 0.759mg sample, the amounts of $CS_2$ in the back section of charcoal were 5.7-132.4 and 0-92% of the amount in the front section, respectively. The total recovery rates of$CS_2$ from 0.379 and 0.759mg spiked sample were 35.7-101.0% and 9l.3-100.1%, respectively. $CS_2$ loss was observed in 0.379mg spiked sample, but not in 0.759mg spiked sample. In the spiked samples, the amount of $CS_2$ in the back section of charcoal was not affected by flow rate when the air volume was controlled. The amount of $CS_2$ in the back section of charcoal increased over sampling time. And the faster the flow rate, the more the migration amount when the sampling time was the same. 3. A known concentration, 10 ppm of $CS_2$, was produced in a 200 L Tedlar bag. When the air volume was 24, 36, 48 L, breakthrough was 5.8, 16.9, 47.4%, respectively. The sampling flow rate of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 Lpm did not change the breakthrough rate. Breakthrough increased over sampling time. And the faster the flow rate, the more the breakthrough, when the sampling time was the same.

A new type of passive samplers were designed and produced by authors. After evaluating the quality of activated carbon by measuring recovery rate of organic vapors and steadiness of sampling rate, activated carbon with 30 - 35 mesh produced by Company S in Korea was selected. In each passive sampler, an amount of 400 mg of the activated carbon was filled in 25-mm cassette and covered by fixed screen (or wire screen with 100 mesh). In addition to the fixed screen, a wind screen (or wire screen with 300 mesh) was also attached at outer face. The sampling rate of the new Korean passive samplers was estimated Conclusions obtained in the study are as follows. 1. Sampling rates of the newly developed Korean passive samplers were affected by sampling time. For n-hexane, sampling rates of 15- and 60-minute samples were 70.92 and 37.45 ml/min, respectively. Sampling rate of both 200- and 450-minute samples was 25.96 ml/min. It is concluded that, when passive samplers are used for measuring organic vapors, samples be collected longer than 60 minutes. 2. Sampling rate of the passive samplers was also affected by airborne concentration of organic vapors. Lower sampling rates were determined at level of 1/2 threshold limit values (TLVs) recommended by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). It is recommended that sampling rate of the passive samplers be obtained at site by measuring concentrations using both the NIOSH Method and passive samplers simultaneously. 3. When the passive samplers, which collected organic vapors, were exposed to clean air for five hours, there was no significant loss of organic vapors due to reverse diffusion. 4. When samples were stored at room temperature ($21.8{\pm}0.7^{\circ}C$) and refrigerator ($3.8{\pm}0.7^{\circ}C$), there was no significant difference in the accuracy of results. For trichloroethylene and n-hexane, accuracies were within 25 % at both temperatures until seven days. However, poor accuracy exceeding 25 % was indicated in toluene from the first day. It is recommended that samples be stored at freezing temperature below $0^{\circ}C$. 5. Sampling efficiency was significantly affected by direction of the passive samplers. Results of samplers facing wind and down, respectively, were compared. Lower amount of organic vapors were collected when the sampler was oriented down. It is recommended that, when air velocity is low in plants, the passive samplers be oriented to the wind. However, when air velocity is high, the passive samplers be oriented down.

In order to develop a confident sampling technique, we designed and constructed a 6-port manifold MFC sampling system for collecting gaseous pollutants in air. Using this instrumentation, we tested the performance criteria of MFC system in terms of: (1) flow rate; (2) MFC-to-MFC variability; (3) tube-to-tube variability; and (4) time. It was interesting to find that the later two factors did not show any significant variations, while the former two show substantially large variations. However, as most of those variabilities are consistent enough to form systematic patterns, we were able to explain the occurrence patterns of all those MFC biases in terms of those four major variables. The overall results of our experiment suggest that one needs to use correction factor for each MFC unit under a given flow rate to maintain optimal accuracy and precision for sampling of those pollutants.
The objective of this paper is to investigate the variation of orifice diameter in a straight pipe which can give equal-sampling rate. This can be utilized for designing orifice in air-sampling smoke detector. The elements which should be considered for designing orifices was presented and the calculation procedure was also given in this paper. The effects of pipe length, the number of orifices, fan pressure was decribed.

Objectives: In working environment measurement, sampling is an important stage for obtaining reliable result as analysis. A personal air sampling pump is one of the most fundamental and important element in the work environment measurement, but it remains at the level of calibrating the flow rate of the pump before and after sampling. There is no checking whether the flow rate set at the initial stage would be hold during sampling. The purpose of this study was to develop a method to evaluate the flow rate performance of particulate sampling pump with three-pieces cassette holder containing filters commonly used to sample particulate. Materials and methods: We tested back pressure of particulate sampling pumps commonly used in Korea with three-pieces cassette holder containing various filters, and tried to find out the combination conditions of filters in accordance with back pressure required by ISO standard 13137. Results: We found out the matrix of sampling media such as three-pieces cassette holder containing filters applicable to the pressure drop required by the ISO standard for evaluating the flow rate stability under increasing pressure drop and long term(8 hour) performance. Conclusions: This evaluation method using sampling media matrix for checking flow rate stability proposed by this study could be very useful tool to find out good performance pumps before sampling.
This study describes (1) the impact of positive sampling artifacts caused by not only a filter-based sampling, but also a denuder-based sampling in the determination of particle-phase organic carbon (POC), (2) the effect of sample flow rate on positive artifacts, and (3) an optimum flow rate that provides a minimized negative sampling artifact for the denuder-based sampling method. To achieve the goals of this study, four different sampling media combinations were employed: (1) Quartz filter-alone (Q-alone), (2) quartz filter behind quartz-fiber filter (QBQ), (3) quartz filter and quartz filter behind Teflon filter (Q-QBT), and (4) quartz filter behind carbon-based denuder (Denuder-Q). The measurement of ambient POC was carried out in an urban area. In addition, to determine gas-phase OC (GOC) removal efficiency of the denuder, a Teflon filter and a quartz filter were deployed upstream and downstream of the denuder, respectively with varying sample flow rates: 5, 10, 20, and 30 LPM. It was found that Q-alone sampling configuration showed a higher POC than QBQ, Q-QBT, and Denuder-Q by 12%, 28%, and 23%, respectively at a sample flow rate of 20 LPM due to no correction for positive artifact caused by adsorption of GOC onto the filter. A lower quantity of GOC was collected from the backup quartz filter on QBQ than that from Q-QBT. This was because GOC was not in equilibrium with that adsorbed on the front quartz filter of QBQ during the sampling period. It is observed that the loss of particle number and mass across the denuder increases with decreasing sample flow rate. The contribution o f positive arti facts to POC decreased with increasing sample flow rate, showing 29%, 25%, and 22% for 10, 20, and 30 LPM, respectively. The 20 LPM turns out to be the optimum sample flow rate for both filter and denuder-based POC sampling.
Convolution Fourier transformation tomographically reconstructs the spatially resolved spray injection rate from direct measuring cells. Asymmetric sprays generated from a twin-hole air shroud injector are tested with 12 equiangular projections of measurements. For each projection angle, line of sight integrated injection rate was measured at 35 positions with equal spacing measuring cells of 3 mm in width, 100 mm in length, 55 mm in depth and 0.5 mm thickness of separating wall. Interpolated data between the projection angles effectively increase the number of projections, which significantly enhances the signal-to-noise level in the reconstructed data. This modified convolution Fourier transformation scheme predicts well the structure of asymmetric sprays. Comparative study has been made between sprays with and without air shrouding. Tomograhpic reconstruction of injection rate from direct measuring cells obtained can be used to estimate the accuracy of volume fraction of spray from the LDPA tomographic reconstruction.
