  • Due to COVID-19, the spread of non-face-to-face culture is increasing the time spent indoors. Accordingly, it is necessary to reduce indoor air pollutants. Also, among building materials, there are paints. As the number of coatings increases, the coating film becomes thick, and there is a risk of cracking and falling off. Therefore, this study is to examine the adsorption properties of indoor air pollutants according to the number of coatings of a paint mixed with powdered activated carbon. In the experimental plan, the addition ratio of powdered activated carbon was selected as 30%, and the number of coatings was selected as primcoating, second coat, and finishing coat, and the concentration of formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds were measured. As a result, as the number of coatings increased, the concentration of formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds tended to decrease. This is considered to be due to the fact that not only the physical adsorption acted by the internal pores of the powdered activated carbon, but also because a lot of powdered activated carbon was present on the painted surface as the coating film was formed. However, since it is judged that there is an error in the concentration due to the inflow of external air as the chamber cover is opened to put the test object in the adsorption test process, it is considered that the experimental method needs to be supplemented.

  • This study aims to analyze the relations among greenbelt, air pollution empirically in order to assess the environmental effects of the greenbelt in the Seoul metropolitan area, objectively. For this purpose, this study conducts an empirical analysis of impacts of greenbelt on urban air pollution using a multiple-regression model. The major findings are summarized as follows. As a result of an empirical analysis of the impacts of greenbelt on air pollution, it is found that the characteristics of the city have impacts on air pollution concentration. It is found that the population and employment are the causes of increases in CO and NO2 concentrations, and the number of employees in the manufacturers has impacts on increases of O3 and SO2, while power plants have impacts on PM10, CO and NO2. Intersections have impacts on O3 and SO2, while the areas of the roads have impacts on CO and NO2. In addition, as for the spatial distribution of air pollutants, it is found that CO and NO2 concentrations are relatively higher in the center of the Seoul metropolitan area, while PM10, O3 and SO2 concentrations are relatively higher in the suburbs. It is found that air pollution concentration is low in greenbelt zone. In the greenbelt zone, PM10, CO and SO2 concentrations are low.

  • The coal gasification fuel is important to replace petroleum fuel. Also they have many benefits for reducing the air pollution. Measurements on the combustion characteristics of synthetic gas from coal gasification have been conducted as compared with LPG in constant volume combustion chamber. The fuel is low caloric synthetic gas containing carbon monoxide 30%, hydrogen 20%, carbon dioxide 5%, and nitrogen 45%. To elucidate the combustion characteristics of the coal gasification fuel, the combustion pressures, combustion durations, and pollutants(NOx, $CO_2$, CO) are measured with equivalence ratios($\phi$), and initial pressures of fuel-air mixture in constant volume chamber. In the case of the coal gasification fuel, maximum combustion pressure and NOx concentration are lower rather than LPG fuel. However CO and $CO_2$ emission concentration are similar to that of LPG fuel.

  • The air quality modeling was carried out to assess the impact of air quality for large scale urban development. The site for the assessment is Multi-fuctional Administrative City which locates in Yeongi-gun, Chungcheongnam-do and estimated population in 2030 is 500,000. Two automatic weather monitoring stations were installed to monitor the meteorological variables for a year and upper air meteorological parameters were measured using radiosonde for 5 days with 4 hours interval in every season. The air quality of standard air pollutants were also measured for 5 days continuously in every season. The results of wind field analysis based on the site measurements and CALMET modeling showed that the valley and mountain winds were prevailed when the sypnotic wind was weak. It also showed that wind speed and directions were highly space-variable within the site basin. The variable wind characteristics implies that the Gaussian dispersion model such ISC3 and AERMOD are not appropriate and the unsteady-sate Lagrangian model such as CALPUFF is preferable. CALPUFF model was applied to assess air quality impact of new sources. The new sources were those for individual and group heating facilities as well as the traffic increases. The results showed that the estimated concentrations of CO and $SO_2$ pollutants by summing the impact concentration of new sources by the dispersion model and the ambient air concentrations by the site measurements were acceptable but those of PM-10 and $NO_2$ would violate ambient air quality standards at several locations due to high ambient air concentrations. It is recommended that the emission reductions near the site should be enforced to improve the ambient air quality.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relation between ozone concentration and the affecting factors in Seosan City of Korea from Jan. 2002 to Dec. 2002. We analyzed the air pollutants such as NO$_2$, PM$_{10} $,SO$_2$, CO and the meteorological factors including solar radiation, air temperature, wind speed and relative humidity. The analytical data were taken statistics by SPSS method. The results were as follows: The seasonal average concentration of ozone were detected 35.0 ppb in Spring, 25.4 ppb in Summer, 23.5 ppb in Autumn and 21.4 ppb in Winter. So the difference of concentrations showed significantly in statistics. The hourly ozone concentration in a day was increased at 7-9 AM, peaked at 3-4 PM. The correlation coefficients was negative to ozone concentration and NO$_2$, SO$_2$, CO, relative humidity, but positive to solar radiation, air temperature, wind speed. With stepwise multiple regression analysis on the 8 factors such as NO$ _2$, PMSO$_{10}$,SO$_2$, CO, solar radiation, air temperature, wind speed and relative humidity, the seasonal primary factors were air temperature in spring, relative humidity in summer and solar radiation in autumn and winter. The above results suggest that ozone is the secondary pollutant by photochemical reaction as the concentration of ozone was increased with the raise of solar radiation.

  • Schools have significant and serious indoor environmental health problem, of which indoor air quality (IAQ) in school building may affect the health of the students and indirectly affect learning performance. Schools are of special concern when regarding indoor exposure to air pollutants, because students are particularly sensitive to pollutants and spend a significant amount of time in that environment. Therefore researches for improvement of indoor air quality have been developed such as installation of air cleaning device, ventilation system, titanium dioxide(TiO2) coating and so on. However, it is difficult to evaluate the magnitude of improvement of indoor air quality in field study because indoor air quality can be affected by source generation, outdoor air level, ventilation, decay by reaction, temperature, humidity, mixing condition and so on. In this study, evaluation of reduction of formaldehyde emission rate in school indoor environments by far-Infrared ray coating material was carried out using mass balance model in indoor environment. we proposed the evaluation method of magnitude of improvement in indoor air quality, considering outdoor level and ventilation. Since simple indoor concentration measurements could not properly evaluate the indoor air quality, outdoor level and ventilation should be considered when evaluate the indoor air quality.

  • Before occupation of an apartment housing, the builders are required to inform the test result of IAQ to the public. However, there is no simplified method to predict IAQ before measurement of pollutant concentration. In this study, a simplified way of predicting IAQ based on the distribution of indoor pollutant concentration is proposed. 7 different cases of air change rate have been simulated through CFD analysis to get the distribution ratio of each pollutant material and then simplified functions were used with CRIAQ1 values derived from CFD simulation to evaluate by comparing the influence of each material in the indoor pollutant concentration. Again, a lot of efforts which can improve the indoor air quality have been performed. Materials used in indoor space are labeled with their pollutant emission level. Installation of ventilation system in residential buildings will be regulated by a building codes sooner or later. But it is important to understand the fact that layout of walls, location or size of openings will influence the indoor air flow and pollutant concentration. And location of emitting material influences to indoor air pollutants distribution. But until now there is few recognition and consideration of these factors. Therefore, in this paper the effects of these factors is proved and some kind of guideline is made for designers after a comparison of typical apartment floor plan and a new type plan with their average pollutant concentration and its distribution of each room. CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) program was used to show the indoor air flow and pollutant concentration distribution. For this purpose, a typical $100m^2$ apartment floor plan was chosen as a case study model and several alternatives were reviewed to improve the IAQ performance. The simulation took place in the condition of natural ventilation through windows.

  • The project of Cheonggyecheon revived the 5.8 kilometer stream and it removed the cover of stream and Cheonggye elevated road. It was begin October of 2003 and completed October of 2005. The purpose of this study is to analyze the air pollution change of Cheonggyecheon area and neighboring area from before and after the project. The change of concentration is compared with an air monitoring station data and measurement data. The analyzed pollutants are $NO_2$, $PM_{10}$, heavy metal, VOC which are measured at Cheonggyecheon and neighboring area. As the results, $NO_2$ concentration shows 10 % decreases in Cheonggyecheon area and neighboring area shows 16 % decreases by Chenoggyecheon restoration, and $PM_{10}$ concentration shows 15 % decreases in Cheonggyecheon area and neighboring area shows 16 % increases. One of VOC, benzene is increased in Cheonggyecheon area compared with neighboring area but Toluene, Ethylbenzene, m+p Xylene increased in neighboring area. After the Cheonggyecheon restoration, The heavy metals are not shows the improvement, but $PM_{10}$ and $NO_2$ concentration improved more than the changes of neighboring area. These improvements of pollution due to reduction of transportation and clearing of elevated road by Cheonggyecheon restoration project.

  • The transfer of air pollutants between passenger room and service room in train are investigated by the computational analysis. The effects of service room temperature, inlet velocity, initial concentration and heating are studied. The flow induced by the difference of density between two rooms is found to take the major role in transfer of polluted air. Low temperature of service room enhances the polluted air flow into passenger room along the floor. Exhaust fan above the door between two rooms is not effective for this case. Strong inlet flow is found to suppress polluted air flow from service room. The heating of passenger room can promote air pollution.

  • This study investigates the impact of increased adoption of eco-friendly vehicles on ozone (O3) concentrations in South Korea, utilizing the community multiscale air quality (CMAQ) model. In the summer of 2017 (June-August), we conducted two experiments: a BASE experiment, representing baseline emissions, and an R_30 experiment, involving a 30% emission reduction due to eco-friendly vehicles. The contrast between these experiments reveals that, while most air pollutants decreased with reduced vehicle emissions, O3 concentrations surprisingly increased (up to 2.1 parts per billion) across South Korea. A further examination of O3 concentration changes was conducted by analyzing daytime and nighttime variations as well as wind direction. During the daytime, O3 concentrations notably rose near metropolitan areas due to reduced O3 titration (O3 + NO → O2 + NO2) resulting from emission reductions. At nighttime, O3 concentrations exhibited a greater increase, attributed to the transport of daytime-generated O3 to rural regions. Notably, the impact of reduced emissions in metropolitan areas on O3 concentrations in downwind areas varied depending on the prevailing wind direction. These findings highlight that the promotion of eco-friendly vehicles, though effective in lowering certain air pollutants, might not directly influence O3 concentrations. This study underscores the need to comprehensively understand the complicated chemistry of O3 to develop effective strategies for air quality management.
